Ugh, I hate that feeling when your ears don't pop after a flight... but I'm glad I got some shut eye even though the person next to me had no concept of personal space. I generally avoid night flights for this reason even though flying during the day "wastes time". Good night 😴
I got an art book with recipes for mixing colours. You have no idea what a help that is, and something that I haven’t seen before. It was pure luck I scored that at the op shop.
It’s so fucked you can’t share and archive resources. If it wasn’t a crime I would be a volunteer archivist scanning or photographing rare or important books and uploading them. Just so things don’t disappear when they go out of print and physical copies dwindle.
I’ve also missed out on getting the Morpho books because I didn’t want to click a random link on social media to download them and now they’ll be gone off the Internet Archive.
Just concerned about the direction of this… there’s increasing crackdowns on lower risk sharing and it’s affecting the grey areas I used to hang around

In many cases you actually can scan things, and potentially share them. There are many loopholes in the Aust Copyright Act, and different ones in those of other countries. Your local library will have an ILL service, an academic library (if you have access) ought have an excellent one. There will likely be fees, but absolutely anything not too fragile to handle can be made available.
Sounds like a massive organisational job for someone like me who can barely run their own life. I’m more thinking about the things I already own.
The art books, a few computer books, craft and sewing books… growing up there was a classic recipe book called Australian Cookery and the Vogue Book of sewing but they may be gone now. I had some rare cds but one was lost in a hasty move and another was stolen 🙄

The content also gets gatekept to ensure maximum profits, price hiked, and wiped out if the corporation feels like it.
And there’s less motivation for independent artists/writers to create or share as a lot of it is being stolen.

If it was only a moral matter I would straight up pirate everything. Even provide. Since I lack the experience to know for sure that I’m avoiding the pitfalls (both legal and in terms of continuing internet access/damage to my device) I don’t. But I don’t blame anybody who does and consider it a service in media preservation.
These arseholes deserve it. A lot of stuff isn’t even available in any other way.
Edit: I watched the Time Traveler clip and am struck by the lack of curiosity there. That’s a danger too. AI may be used as a tool to the point people get too lazy to do their own thinking.

Dancing on a mountain of bones sounds like a bit of a risky manoeuvre. We survive Covid and die after tripping over a badly placed femur, rolling down the side of the mountain and being crushed under an avalanche of skulls.

I left the ramen restaurant hungry. You’d think $25 would get you a decent sized ramen but no. Two tiny pieces of pork belly. And the broth was like chicken soup.

Decided to take my (SILs) bike on the scenic foreshore front beach path back home from the shops. Usually don't do that as people (and kids / dogs) are a bit all over the place. Anyway now I have a bell with a unicorn on it which I'm required to use by law. it also has a front basket. I didn't use the bell but felt empowered (and got laughed at by two young girls). They didn't have unicorn bells or a front basket so fuck em. I'm gonna get some tassels next.
In more serious news the Pt. Lonny front beach was absolutely smashed by recent swell / weather. Had a chat to a local who was walking past and she'd never seen anything like it either. Must've been wild.
Also got about 10 hellos from randoms which was nice.
Recently discovered that I have very low iron levels so got put on iron pills. Have been taking them for a week, and just got through a heap of housework today without wanting to collapse from exhaustion. Seems like the pills are working - who’d have thunk?!
Had to take these during radiotherapy for cancer as iron levels had fallen off a cliff. Horrid things. They didn't do much for iron levels as I had serious dire rear at the time. Also hated the color of poops - thoroughly unnatural. Given a choice, I'd go for the infusion I think.
Awesome! Keep an eye on your fibre and water intake, iron supps can make you a little constipated. Source: me, someone who also needed iron and had this happen.
There are few things better for the soul then a few hours and a few drinks spent catching up with an old friend that speaks your particular form of neurospiciness...

I’ve been putting the registration for GardenSafe off for years even after posting about it… tbh I’m still struggling majorly with my health and this creeping grass is like kudzu, so action isn’t guaranteed. But why not contribute to citizen science.
But it’s asking really inflexible questions so I don’t know how to answer. Like for main food growing area do I answer in ground or pots? I may answer in ground because I want to know if it’s safe to do so.

And I’m not seeing any peeling external paint - but the builders buried discarded rubble in the soil which is a concern.
I don’t use pesticides but I don’t know what’s in the runoff from another yard.
I just want to find out if the soil here is theoretically safe to grow edible stuff in, lead levels and pesticides etc.

You're overthinking it. Just answer the questions as best you can and don't worry about the rest of the details - they are not doing a detailed analysis of your site, they will just be doing a rough classification to identify rough links in the aggregate data.
Rule of Thumb: if the edible bit is actually in contact with soil, then you have cause for concern. If the edible bit is waving in the air, not to worry too much. Lettuce is debatable, but usually the faster it grows the less problem it is. The real problem is long lead time crops actually in the ground, like potatoes.
Zucchini and curcurbits in general are usually no problem if the fruit is off the ground, so trellising sounds like a good idea. Heavy fruit like pumpkins can't be trellised and take up a shittonne of room, so might not be the best use of space. If you do have a try at pumpkins you might need to put a tile or plank put under each fruit to keep it off the ground.
Root veg would be better in pots or similar. As I didn't have room or good soil for spuds in East Brunswick, I grew spuds in car tyres stacked up on a concrete base. Made harvesting easy too as all I had to do was pull each tyre off in turn and fumble out the spuds. Very very productive way to grow spuds. Round carrots & beetroot went in milk crates lined with shademesh - these worked very well and also worked for leeks and silverbeet. I am too cheap to buy large pots from the green store. I found 1 bag of potting mix fitted nicely in 1 milkcrate too which made planning easier. Milk crate gardens did need extra watering in summer as they did dry out a lot if I didn't watch them. One benefit was they were easy to move about in accordance with the weather/sunlight. I've tried using growbags, but I find them a bit heavy to move about. They do hold a lot of soil so could be good for big carrots etc that need a deep soil bed without lumps in it.
I was considering the tiny sugar pumpkins that wouldn’t be very heavy, or snow peas but chose some zucchini seeds. I’m thinking to stake them up or maybe improvise a lattice.
The milk crate pots are ingenious. I’d probably forget to water or have to bring them inside though so maybe not… I wouldn’t be able to lift the grow bags or the tyres but these are some good ideas
For me watering was a once a week sport. In very dry hot weather I'd kick the milk crates together to reduce evaporation but not much more than that. Peas/beans are reliable, productive and would be safe but would need a lattice of something to grow up. Lengths of string tied to the fence would do and be removable if you left the place.
Fun fact: beetroot leaves are delicious in salad when small and young. Can be cooked like spinach too. I sow beetroot pretty thickly and harvest most of them for leaves, only leaving a few well spaced out to make roots.
If you have room for 50cm pots, you can grow pumpkins and watermelons in them with one of those tripod trellises. MUCH smaller yield and fruit, but perfect for 1-2 people
most gardening is done in the top most soil in raised beds and that usually has added soil and compost too. Any contaminants would be deeper.
Your soil is fine. The problem with building rubble is the bits of concrete and stones. Concrete changes the acidity of your soil. Just pick out bits of concrete and stones and any other rubbish you find and it should be fine.
just get as much as you can out bit by bit, concentrate on the small bits first as they have greatest surface area to interact with water and your soil
I’d have to get the grass torn up first and don’t think I’ll be able to alone. When I first came here I put weed mat down and then creeping grass came in from under a neighbours fence and took over, grew right through it

I’m wondering how to protect the eventual seedlings from slugs and snails. I’m thinking of keeping them inside in paper cups until they’re so big they have to be planted out. I am not dragging large pots inside every night.
The other thought was cut off plastic bottles as ‘hats’ but if I plant in every pot I would need 12… and that’s if I plant multiple in each and thin. I don’t have to plant them all but there are 25 seeds in the packet and due to space I never use them all.
I could donate the extra to a seed library but when would I have the chance.

The drunk aggressive homeless man is back, was drinking and swearing explosively on the bench outside. I tried to close the door quietly but the fucking thing squeaked and he was looking at my place.
He’s walked away past my place still glancing at the door. For a second I thought he was going to come knocking and was debating whether to tell him to leave or just call the cops. Thankfully he didn’t. But it sucks and is part of the reason I don’t like to go out. This one has also had a go at me before.
I’m trying to be grateful for the things I have and focus on what I can control, but this spot has always been rough and the pandemic made it so much worse.

half the refinish paint/stain is on the old sewing machine cabinet, the original finish was so badly damaged tho, might need a second coat
and might get a wire brush to clean up the cast iron frame and some blacking to spruce it up a bit. Then I might tackle some of the rust on the machine fittings

Many research grants now require the outcomes to be free and public. Open Access is growing, but somebody still has to pay at some point.

It’s very likely used in sausage rolls as of at least 4/5 years ago. The pale colour and lesser volume was a hint.

Decided to take my (SILs) bike on the scenic foreshore front beach path back home from the shops. Usually don't do that as people (and kids / dogs) are a bit all over the place. Anyway now I have a bell with a unicorn on it which I'm required to use by law. it also has a front basket. I didn't use the bell but felt empowered (and got laughed at by two young girls). They didn't have unicorn bells or a front basket so fuck em. I'm gonna get some tassels next.
In more serious news the Pt. Lonny front beach was absolutely smashed by recent swell / weather. Had a chat to a local who was walking past and she'd never seen anything like it either. Must've been wild.
Also got about 10 hellos from randoms which was nice.

Recently discovered that I have very low iron levels so got put on iron pills. Have been taking them for a week, and just got through a heap of housework today without wanting to collapse from exhaustion. Seems like the pills are working - who’d have thunk?!

Had to take these during radiotherapy for cancer as iron levels had fallen off a cliff. Horrid things. They didn't do much for iron levels as I had serious dire rear at the time. Also hated the color of poops - thoroughly unnatural. Given a choice, I'd go for the infusion I think.

I’ve been putting the registration for GardenSafe off for years even after posting about it… tbh I’m still struggling majorly with my health and this creeping grass is like kudzu, so action isn’t guaranteed. But why not contribute to citizen science.
But it’s asking really inflexible questions so I don’t know how to answer. Like for main food growing area do I answer in ground or pots? I may answer in ground because I want to know if it’s safe to do so.
Renos within 5 years? No, but around 10.
And I’m not seeing any peeling external paint - but the builders buried discarded rubble in the soil which is a concern.
I don’t use pesticides but I don’t know what’s in the runoff from another yard.
I just want to find out if the soil here is theoretically safe to grow edible stuff in, lead levels and pesticides etc.
Edit: For peeling paint I just said yes because I didn’t know if there was any that got buried with the rubble. But now wondering if that was bad data and would label the soil as higher risk than it is. Should I try to tell them the situation?
Idk. I just don’t want to grow anything that’s dangerous to eat.

You're overthinking it. Just answer the questions as best you can and don't worry about the rest of the details - they are not doing a detailed analysis of your site, they will just be doing a rough classification to identify rough links in the aggregate data.

Rule of Thumb: if the edible bit is actually in contact with soil, then you have cause for concern. If the edible bit is waving in the air, not to worry too much. Lettuce is debatable, but usually the faster it grows the less problem it is. The real problem is long lead time crops actually in the ground, like potatoes.

Zucchini and curcurbits in general are usually no problem if the fruit is off the ground, so trellising sounds like a good idea. Heavy fruit like pumpkins can't be trellised and take up a shittonne of room, so might not be the best use of space. If you do have a try at pumpkins you might need to put a tile or plank put under each fruit to keep it off the ground.
Root veg would be better in pots or similar. As I didn't have room or good soil for spuds in East Brunswick, I grew spuds in car tyres stacked up on a concrete base. Made harvesting easy too as all I had to do was pull each tyre off in turn and fumble out the spuds. Very very productive way to grow spuds. Round carrots & beetroot went in milk crates lined with shademesh - these worked very well and also worked for leeks and silverbeet. I am too cheap to buy large pots from the green store. I found 1 bag of potting mix fitted nicely in 1 milkcrate too which made planning easier. Milk crate gardens did need extra watering in summer as they did dry out a lot if I didn't watch them. One benefit was they were easy to move about in accordance with the weather/sunlight. I've tried using growbags, but I find them a bit heavy to move about. They do hold a lot of soil so could be good for big carrots etc that need a deep soil bed without lumps in it.

I was considering the tiny sugar pumpkins that wouldn’t be very heavy, or snow peas but chose some zucchini seeds. I’m thinking to stake them up or maybe improvise a lattice.
The milk crate pots are ingenious. I’d probably forget to water or have to bring them inside though so maybe not… I wouldn’t be able to lift the grow bags or the tyres but these are some good ideas

For me watering was a once a week sport. In very dry hot weather I'd kick the milk crates together to reduce evaporation but not much more than that. Peas/beans are reliable, productive and would be safe but would need a lattice of something to grow up. Lengths of string tied to the fence would do and be removable if you left the place.
Fun fact: beetroot leaves are delicious in salad when small and young. Can be cooked like spinach too. I sow beetroot pretty thickly and harvest most of them for leaves, only leaving a few well spaced out to make roots.

If you have room for 50cm pots, you can grow pumpkins and watermelons in them with one of those tripod trellises. MUCH smaller yield and fruit, but perfect for 1-2 people

most gardening is done in the top most soil in raised beds and that usually has added soil and compost too. Any contaminants would be deeper.
Your soil is fine. The problem with building rubble is the bits of concrete and stones. Concrete changes the acidity of your soil. Just pick out bits of concrete and stones and any other rubbish you find and it should be fine.

I’m wondering how to protect the eventual seedlings from slugs and snails. I’m thinking of keeping them inside in paper cups until they’re so big they have to be planted out. I am not dragging large pots inside every night.
The other thought was cut off plastic bottles as ‘hats’ but if I plant in every pot I would need 12… and that’s if I plant multiple in each and thin. I don’t have to plant them all but there are 25 seeds in the packet and due to space I never use them all.
I could donate the extra to a seed library but when would I have the chance.

::: spoiler Bummer The drunk aggressive homeless man is back, was drinking and swearing explosively on the bench outside. I tried to close the door quietly but the fucking thing squeaked and he was looking at my place.
He’s walked away past my place still glancing at the door. For a second I thought he was going to come knocking and was debating whether to tell him to leave or just call the cops. Thankfully he didn’t. But it sucks and is part of the reason I don’t like to go out. This one has also had a go at me before.
I’m trying to be grateful for the things I have and focus on what I can control, but this spot has always been rough and the pandemic made it so much worse. :::

half the refinish paint/stain is on the old sewing machine cabinet, the original finish was so badly damaged tho, might need a second coat
and might get a wire brush to clean up the cast iron frame and some blacking to spruce it up a bit. Then I might tackle some of the rust on the machine fittings
