The hits keep on hitting. Told I have the diabeetus last week. This afternoon I get the call that my nan has passed away, so with my parents in America I'm handling things with my best British stiff upper lip and just now I finally sat down after having to call my mum and tell her that her mum has died then dealing with the paperwork, looked at my phone and it appears the reason I stopped hearing from the woman I was interested in persuing things with is that she might have taken her jerk ex back.

Sprinkle in a couple of minor work annoyances like people ignoring things I say when I'm meant to be a voice of authority and I'm just having a grand old time. Yaaaay.

tombruzzo@aussie.zone · 8 pts · 1y

I'm so sorry to hear that. Sometimes when it rains with the bad news it pours

Duenan@aussie.zone · 6 pts · 1y

Iโ€™m sorry for your loss.

Will you get some time or are you entitled to some bereavement leave?

Make sure you look after yourself as best as possible during this tough time and please let us know if thereโ€™s anything we can do for you.

Oh that all sucks, I'm sorry. Can you at least take a day or two off work? It'd give you some space to process and minimise the idiots while your tolerance is low.

bull@aussie.zone · 7 pts · 1y

Yeah I've told work I won't be available tomorrow. Got some things to take care of so it'll be good to take a day.

Flu bad. Why come I remove gunk from my nose and then there's more gunk right away? I don't like it. Why come body go ouchie even though I'm giving it a rest today? Unfair.

just_kitten@aussie.zone · 7 pts · 1y

I also remain bewildered and mortified by my body's ability to generate seemingly endless amounts of mucus out of nowhere. Flu sucks though. I hope you get well very soon...

Doing my best not to feel anxious about today's inspection and any forthcoming emails from the landlord. Very grateful for psych session later today though the emails will probably come tomorrow or later in the week. Hoping I can book in a session for next week too.

Think I'm going to treat myself to pizza tonight. Salmon pizza

Duenan@aussie.zone · 6 pts · 1y (1 reply)

Try and remain calm. See if you can document things as they happen on your phone if you're able to incase you need it for evidence at VCAT while it's still fresh in your memory.

A treat for yourself sounds well deserved.

just_kitten@aussie.zone · 5 pts · 1y

I did take some general photos of the joint (and of the defect on the balcony) before leaving for work this morning because I won't be around for the inspection itself. That's all I can do really, and hope for the best

TinyBreak@aussie.zone · 6 pts · 1y (1 reply)

Absolutely zero point in stressing out before anything happens. sets you up for arguments you may not need to have and locks you into a position you may not want to hold. feel what you gotta feel but ride the wave of it all if you can.

just_kitten@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 1y

Yeah look tbh that's exactly why I'm not going to be present during the inspection, I'd rather have some distance from it all this time and I don't want any antagonism to leak out while they're there. Only written communication going forward

just_kitten@aussie.zone · 5 pts · 1y (2 replies)

So far no emails or notes left around, nothing seems to have been disturbed. LL has a habit of dropping bombs on Friday afternoons so we'll see what transpires through the week.

Unit I viewed today was way too small. Only large enough for a bar fridge, and a communal laundry. Below my budget but not worth the savings

Gibsonhasafluffybutt@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 1y (1 reply)

I've got my fingers crossed for you ๐Ÿคž๐Ÿพ

I know finding a place at the moment really sucks. You'll find something suitable I reckon, it's just getting through that initial slog :)

just_kitten@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 1y

Thanks. Yeah the competition is a bit stiff. I'm lucky at least to have a chunk of savings and a good job (and no visa hanging over my head!!!!). Glad I got the ball rolling with inspections to know what's out there and where my price point is at.

Llabyrinthine@aussie.zone · 9 pts · 1y

I am ready to bathe myself in ice-cream. LOL.

Conditions are prime for ticket inspectors today. I haven't seen any yet but I bet they are lurking in the shadows just waiting to attack

StudChud@aussie.zone · 8 pts · 1y

Yesterday evening, my partner and I were waiting at the tram stop with his dad, and I was complaining about the ticket inspectors. I went on about how they target students and non-white passengers, how they're failed police officers, blah blah blah. I the looked over past them to the rest of the people at the stop, and realised there were four ticket inspectors there waiting too.

I would have felt embarrassed except they're shit and I was right haha

I wish I had friends who were free on a Tuesday evening to just shoot the shit and share a pizza with. I remember long conversations in cars with uni friends after class, those halcyon days when we didn't have so many Commitments and Schedules...

It's cooling down quite a bit now after a warm afternoon and gone all cloudy; don't entirely feel up to a walk. But I AM having that damn pizza and catching up on today's episode of OMITB after the toll of yesterday. I shall walk to work and back tomorrow instead. Done.

But first... some reading on schema therapy..

E: unrelated but DT fam, any recommendations for family friendly dinner spots in the CBD? Friend is visiting with their family from interstate, kid is ~2, mainly about vibe and not being insanely loud

Duenan@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 1y (4 replies)

Itโ€™s probably not the same but what about a phone call?

Thatโ€™s than better than nothing and at least you can let it out and feel better about verbally having an outlet?

Itโ€™s definitely cooler now. The sun has gone away and the cold breeze was out. I actually felt cold again.

Go go Pizza!

just_kitten@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 1y (3 replies)

People don't really seem to be into phone calls at my age! Well there's one person I could've hit up normally but she's overseas at the moment.

It certainly has gotten cool again. Was nice to whip out a summer top for the day anyway.

Duenan@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 1y (2 replies)

Iโ€™m still a phone person but yeah I understand. A lot of people around me donโ€™t seem to have time for phone calls either and can only text back and junk.

I think itโ€™s going to be cooler over the next few days so the warmer weather didnโ€™t last too long this time around.

Tell me about this Salmon Pizza. Is there anything else on it?

just_kitten@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 1y (1 reply)

It has bocconcini and dill and capers... But I changed my mind and went for the two large traditional pizzas and garlic bread special for $39, and just got vegetarian and marinara. Felt full pretty quickly but this means dinner for another couple of days which is great.

I finally figured out how to download things from github today properly. I was always going to the source code and thinking I had to download dependencies and compile things.

Turns out you just go to Releases in the sidebar and it's all there. Now I can play the recomped version of Majora's Mask and use the Dark Souls gadget to fight bosses over and over again

I've worked out a potential study plan that would have me finish uni by the end of 2026. It would require doing 22 units over 6 teaching periods.

It would completely cook my brain (if I even passed) but gosh it's tempting. I just wanna get out of here and change careers. But the current plan is to finish end of 2027. Which really isn't so bad.

TinyBreak@aussie.zone · 6 pts · 1y (2 replies)

I wouldnt rob myself of time with family, friends, gaming or whatever just to get to the goalposts quicker. edit: thats just my 2 cents having pursued uni part time whilst working full time myself.

In a few weeks, I'll be staying at a hotel with a buffet breakfast included in the stay price. This hotel doesn't come cheap, so I feel it's my duty to squeeze every bit of value out of the price.

Is it wrong if I take a few items away from the buffet for later enjoyment? I won't be obvious about it - the take away items will be hidden in a tote bag I'll bring in with me. Easy things to take away - some pastries, fruit, not hot food. I've never done this before, but planning how to get away with it has been exciting.

Bottom_racer@aussie.zone · 6 pts · 1y

I 'stole' a croissant once from a buffet at a 5 star in Indo.

Then the next day stole a spring roll.

I self flagellated for weeks after that.

MeanElevator@aussie.zone · 5 pts · 1y

You paid for it so take it.

When I used to travel for work, I'd grab fruit from the breakfast buffet to take with me for the day. Bananas, kiwis apples ..whatever whatever wasn't cut was fair game

A courier is meant to come today to pick up the old work laptop. I was given the wonderfully specific window of 9:30 to 17:30. Kids are dropped off, I'm about to shower, and I'm ready to hunker down and not go anywhere until he comes to pick it up.

tombruzzo@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 1y

I have two laptops from old roles that never bothered to arrange collection. I gave one to the MIL so she has an actual computer and took one for myself as the linux test driver.

God, I remember those Nokia Windows phones. They gave Trevor in GTAV a windows phone to show how insane he was, it just dates the game to a specific time period now.

melbaboutown@aussie.zone · 8 pts · 1y (4 replies)

I was wondering if anyone here has had experience with Independent Living options/renting through the NDIS and wouldnโ€™t mind talking about it?

Group homes and supported living are not appropriate for me. I prefer to stay as independent as possible, need to live alone and choose my own support workers - so Iโ€™m very wary about what Iโ€™d be getting into especially if my plan ever changed. Hence ILO.

I donโ€™t really trust the NDIS to be honest. But my disability is degenerative, current housing is substandard and dangerous, and despite trying to transfer for years it is just not likely to happen.

dumblederp@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 1y (1 reply)

We're probably too small a group. I think there's an /r/NDIS which might have a more experienced audience.

melbaboutown@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 1y

Thanks. I just tended to keep my personal info more to myself in the Other Place :/

Nath@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 1y (1 reply)

NDIS is just a government programme that funds people with disabilities. Don't think of it as a company or single entity. There are many providers that work within the framework of the NDIS, and your experience within the program will depend 100% on the provider(s) you work with. The bad reputation the programme has is because there are many cowboys and awful operators in there. The government is trying to clean it up, though.

I don't know how it works first-hand, but people using the scheme generally have someone handling their plan and being their advocate. I have a friend who fulfils this role for her daughter, and it's basically a part-time job to do it yourself. Most people pay someone to manage their plans.

I'm sorry that I don't have anything specific to suggest, but NDIS is overall a thing that is good. Don't be swayed by the bad press thrown at it any more than you'd blame Medicare if you had a bad doctor experience. The programme is expensive, and so of course there are lots of people who want to get rid of it.

melbaboutown@aussie.zone · 1 pts · 1y

I know, thanks. I actually am with the NDIS and am cautious due to my own experiences.

I just had specific questions around ILO, as I know there is at least one other poster here on NDIS who also seems to live independently.

But I didnโ€™t want to seem rude or put them on the spot by questioning them directly about their arrangement. Hence the very openly phrased question.

What does one have at a Royal Barbie? Angus beef snags on artisan bread? All the salads? Crownies?

dumblederp@aussie.zone · 6 pts · 1y

Salmon.

King size anything I think. Maybe Queen of Puddings for dessert (basically a Floating Island).

useless_modern_god@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 1y

High quality sausage with both onions and sauce underneath

Someone will need to pop down to the servo to get the ice for the esky. The good edible ice not the sewer ice.

bull@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 1y (1 reply)

Probably expensive seafood and white wine too. Oh and people wearing a lot of white linen and playing bocce. Is this related to something I haven't heard about because I don't watch/read the news?

The Royals are currently attending a community bbq. A meat and greet.

Far out. I was wondering where my catโ€™s treats were if theyโ€™d been delivered and looked back on the security camera. Some dero with alcohol in his hand had come right up to my doorstep to steal my parcel in broad daylight.

So now not only does my cat not have her treats this sketchy guy now has my personal details (potentially including my number or email) and knows a woman lives here. Plus any attempts at identity theft that may follow.

That also might explain another parcel I havenโ€™t received.

Fuck this suburb and fuck these people. Scumbags are just multiplying.

I looked into a parcel locker ages ago but have been putting out fires and didnโ€™t get to it.

Taleya@aussie.zone · 5 pts · 1y (1 reply)

Nah, you're spiralling a bit

What happened was derro realised they were cat treats and not an iphone, swore and threw it all in a bush

melbaboutown@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 1y

I hope so. But even just one of my neighbours finding that discarded personal information would be very bad for me. I donโ€™t want to go into it all. Living here has had a long โ€œrichโ€ history and has left me with legitimate ptsd triggers.

Plus I rely heavily on delivery now so if all my shit is getting stolen thatโ€™s a problem

Iโ€™ve already called and the response was lacklustre. Iโ€™m waiting for a link to submit the video but expect nothing to happen.

Also I now have to make arrangements for help to get everything in person, lock my letterbox and set up a parcel locker.

What's your knockoff brand that is better than (or just as good) as the name brand?

What's your name brand for which there is no substitute?

TinyBreak@aussie.zone · 6 pts · 1y (1 reply)

Aldi chocolate is typically 10X better than the cadbury stuff, but these days a cadbury block on sale for 3 bucks is better value. Know its not what you mean, but still technically accurate to your question: I like Kia better than Hyundai. Hyundai are a bit uninspired. I also prefer Mitsubishi to Nissan.

bull@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 1y

Another vote for the Aldi chocolate range which is incredible and leagues ahead of Cadbury and just about anything you can get from the Colesworth shelves. Maybe Lindt is a contender but like 3x more expensive than the Aldi stuff.

dumblederp@aussie.zone · 6 pts · 1y (3 replies)

Coles 1kg tasty cheese is the best of the cheap cheeses.

Eagle@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 1y

Yep, agree with you on this one.

Nath@aussie.zone · 1 pts · 1y (1 reply)

What is "cheap cheese" in Melbourne? In 2016, it was $10/kg for the cheap cheese. In Perth, you can reliably get cheese for $8.50/kg. It went up for a while last year to ~$10ish but has come back down recently to $8.50 again.

My theory is dairy goods in general are cheaper here because we have competing local companies.

dumblederp@aussie.zone · 1 pts · 1y

By cheap cheese, I'm referring to the house brands of Aldi/Coles/Woolies. Aldi is the worst, there's something wrong with that cheese.

Eagle@aussie.zone · 5 pts · 1y

Aldi goat cheese, both the sliced and spreadable is hard to beat. I will not compromise on Omo washing powder.

Duenan@aussie.zone · 5 pts · 1y (2 replies)

Aldi pasta, I think it's Remono or something. Cooks just as well and comes out perfectly al dente just like the more expensive Barilla brand.

Also I love their organic pasta sauce because it's cheap and it's so tasty.

TinyBreak@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 1y (1 reply)

the aldi pasta absolutly SLAPS!

Duenan@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 1y

It's awesome, I love it!

CEOofmyhouse56@aussie.zone · 5 pts · 1y

Milk. Milk is milk. I'm getting the cheapest one possible.

Lurpak. Nothing else comes close.

melbaboutown@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 1y

Woolies or Aldi peanut butter. Woolies, Aldi or Coles soy milk bricks. Coles and Aldi dark chocolate.

Uhhโ€ฆ generally it involves needing to buy brand because the generic contains an allergen or causes a reaction. So Balnea sorbolene bar โ€˜soapโ€™ and Cerave pump lotion.

tone212_@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 1y

Aldi cream cheese (Westacre brand I think), better than any of the name brands at Woolies. The consistency is just right.

underwatermagpies@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 1y

The Aldi Yogo is delicious. So much better than the original, which is already pretty good.

useless_modern_god@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 1y

Casio G-Shock is a name brand that is still very much trustworthy and consistent.

MeanElevator@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 1y (2 replies)

The other Biscoff spread....Specloos or something like that. Much better than the proper one.

Nothing beats OG Nutella. Taking it a step further, Nutella made in Italy is the best.

Nath@aussie.zone · 5 pts · 1y (1 reply)

Horrified by the sugar content in Nutella, I bought the kids Nutino instead (12% sugar instead of 54%) when they were little. They now much prefer this brand to the original. Which has turned around and bitten me in the end as Nutino isn't always in stock when/where I need it.

MeanElevator@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 1y

Oh I know full well why Nutella tastes so good. I'll have a small spoon of it rarely and that hits the spot.

bull@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 1y

Coles/Woolies or whatever is cheapest bottled water vs Mount Franklin or any other fancy brand. The cheap ones are fine. I don't even know if they still sell Evian here but Evian tastes weird. So does Nestlรฉ's one whatever that's called. Obligatory Fuck Nestlรฉ.

Don't come at me with "just drink tap water it's great in Melbourne".. I do when I'm home.. but I also go on road trips to places with less-than-amazing tap water and/or no chilled water.
