Morning everyoneeeee ๐ค TGIF.
The weeks are zooming by so fast for me at the moment. I feel like I blink and it's Thursday and then the weekend. Not sure if this is good because I'm not feeling like work is dragging on so long all week, or bad because life is just slipping by quickly
Whatever I save on rent and gas connection fees at this place I'll definitely be making up for in air-conditioning - despite having the extractor fan on and blinds and windows firmly closed the place is a furnace. I can feel the fire from behind the blinds in this west facing bedroom. It's hotter than it is outside.
Off to have dinner with a friend shortly but I think I'll need to have the AC on timer while I'm out so that I can sleep in this damn place tonight ๐ฎโ๐จ
So much about this place that is just absolutely not what I'd choose or want, and I'm still paying so much, sigh. Not gonna focus on that tho.
My mum might visit for a bit in Jan so I was thinking of getting a roll up foam mattress anyway, used to have one in a swag but I've given that away. At a stretch I could sleep on the couch with my legs bent, or resting on the arms
Used to see those at other places, looks so ghetto but I might seriously consider it (and too bad if it reflects right off into other peoples windows across the carpark) because it's just untenable otherwise. I've just come home and the air-conditioning was on for an hour and then off for an hour and it's still hot as fuck in here, there's no cross ventilation even with all the windows open now.
Wish I had a way to stick them on the outside of the windows, that's what needs to stop getting hot in the first place
FFS someone backed into my car when doing school pick up. Thankfully not much damage and to their credit they hung around to give me their details, but jesus I do not need the headache.
Itโll be okโฆ Iโm sure you can catch up, and one missed class wonโt be a problem. If you want to you could email the lecturer and just ask if thereโs anything you need to do
That's enough work for today. Sign off. Going to have a bit of retail therapy before heading home, but I won't last long if it's super crowded at the shops like I think it'll be.
There are no penalties for parents or kids that flout this, kids can easily get around it with parents ids or vpns, and Albanese even admits that they will and that them being able to is beside the point. Soโฆ what is the point? Itโs just performative security theatre and a convenient excuse to increase surveillance.
The Liberals are worse by far but both parties are terrible.
Aussie Zone is definitely captured by the new laws because the definition of "age-restricted social media platform" is so broad.
However, the legislative rules (which are not published yet and can be changed at any time by the relevant minister) would likely exclude platforms below a certain size. The rules are the same document that will include Snapchat but exclude video games, for example.
I think once the rules are published there's going to be a lot of criticism and, hopefully, revisions. It doesn't make sense that Aussie Zone be so restrictive about user age.
Oh great so the small community of absolutely fascist incels planning the night of a thousand aryan rapes skate on by while julia childs cooking class gets a jackboot up the arse
Online gaming isnโt coveredโฆ as least according to one source. Lemmit DT Minecraft server? Some old free game and make a guild? ๐ค
Then again it has similar issues to things like Discord in that itโs fast paced and hard to catch up on at your leisure. I know everyone has different work and sleep schedules.
Iโd totally be down for an old school v bulletin forum if that could sneak under the radar in any way at all. Potentially even volunteering for mod services if absolutely necessary. However Iโm not sure if the software or whatever is as secure as modern tech or whatever. Not really my field. Edit: Holy crap hosting isnโt necessarily cheap.
Edit 2: Oh manโฆ what happens with places like Whirlpool :(
How good is it when you go to a coffee shop and your favourite barista is there so you know you're gonna get a good cuppa. That's a little win today ๐
That's actually a reasonable explanation for this wording, could be a direct translation from the original ๆปกๅฐ the second character ๅฐ can mean earth/ground/soil and can mean planet Earth (ๅฐ็) when combined with a character meaning ball/sphere.
I know my issues cannot compare to yours, but my abode is also a tip! Partner with untreated ADHD (we're working on the untreated part lol) and me with CPTSD = no executive functions present here ๐
Try not to stress about the state of your home, friend, you are doing your best and that's perfect! We do what we can, when we can, please don't beat yourself up! ๐๐๐๐
Ooh, looks big. But also looks like it's getting blown Southwest towards Gisborne and might miss most of Melbourne. Whatever, just bring on the cool change please.
Didn't take lunch because I was waiting for something to come through then had a meeting. So I took it now for an early trip home. A nice way to end a Friday
I once heard of someone collecting the shed cicada shells and spray painting them gold, to use as Xmas decorations. Should you want something a little different at this time of year
That would be beautiful! So many insecks are beautifully geometric in design, and gilded would look stunning! And the cicada isn't using the shell anymore so why not. So far I've just been putting the shells in the compost, but painting them might be a lot more fun.
Last night toddler was dawdling through dinner. I asked him if he was still going and he nodded. I asked him to show me him eating something then. He looked at me like he didnt understand so I gestured eating something. His face lights up in recognition, picks up his fork and starts chewing on the handle.
A 30 tube set of beginner/student acrylic paints with 2 canvas boards included. $9 on sale down from $14.
The cheapest mathomat (for drawing circles to shade and drawing radial lines from a vanishing point). $11.
And a cheap set of kids binoculars to watch the maggies from a distance without alarming them. (Iโm especially looking out for the one with a broken beak because Iโm worried about its wellbeing.) Like $13.
I really wish that Iโd just bought the poster paint from the start because painting that square of cardboard used up both my tiny tubes of yellow Anko paint and itโs still translucent and patchy. Iโll go over it again a few times with the cheap fluoro. Doesnโt matter if itโs ugly. Those whiteflies better be lured into these homemade sticky traps. Iโm making a bunch.
I have to say it was fun though. Been a bit paralysed to crack into the paints and even a crappy disposable project has taught me how the paint behaves and how I need to work to reduce the appearance of brushstrokes. It might help if I go on to doing stuff like priming surfaces and toned ground.
I bought another paint set because it had very similar yellows to the ones I used up but also it had magenta. A lot of cheap sets leave it out but itโs considered a primary colour and apparently you canโt mix it yourself - you can try but you risk unwanted muddiness. Iโm disappointed that it didnโt have a dark brown though. But I have the brown in the Kmart set.
Bit of a mixed bag. There are a fair few secondary and tertiary colours I probably wouldnโt need, a few colours with the proper standard names!!! but Iโm not sure if they match up in colour to the official shade. The pthalo blue and ultramarine look really similar, at least in the tube, and the โcyanโ looks suspiciously pastel. I need to go double check what it should look like. I do have a little unnamed Anko tube that might be close enough to cyan though.
Hmmโฆ Yeah. There are particular colours I always look for because I know theyโre foundational and would get heavy use but even in a big set it doesnโt have all the basics. It is intended for kids.
But still. It was an alright deal. Maybe if I look carefully and do some experimental mixes I can work out which tubes correspond to the standard colours called for. Maybe I just need more experience.
If I can get off my butt and actually use these up/gain some skill then I can budget for some better quality paints and buy the specific colours I want individually. (Which right now would be quite expensive.)
Edit: Iโm still half asleep. Itโs not cyan but โceruleanโ so I will have to pinch hit.
I wish Iโd got some gesso. I know cheap materials are false economy but while learning I think even a bargain bin tub of gesso and leftover cardboard would be cheaper than buying canvases.
I believe it's possible to make your own gesso - there must be some recipies out there on the net. Dunno if cheaper, but might be better quality. Artists generally not being super rich and are creative.
Oh it absolutely is. I remember seeing something about using leftover latex house paint and perhaps chalk. But thatโs a fair effort
Edit: actually checked and thereโs a recipe thatโs more doable but I donโt have a large enough quantity of white acrylic paint and donโt want to use glue as it can yellow.
Anko gesso is very cheap - itโs just acquiring goods thatโs annoying
Theyโre not cheap, are they?! I just thought you meant they could be scanned like a credit card (hence the rfid thingo), and the data be stolen or something.
Last time I went overseas mine was just a book, lol
while I fully understand and support the "fuck you, pay me" and "act your wage" ethos of millennials and genZ, some of the stuff I've dealt with this week honestly has me questioning which one of us actually grew up inhaling leaded petrol fumes.
I'll get to see the 'business' side of work today. I think it will be interesting, especially given you'd only usually go to work under unpleasant circumstances. It will be nice to sit in on proceedings knowing they're not about you
I can't find the stupid Christmas Elf! For the last week or so my son has been making comments about how much he liked the mischief the Elf got up to.
So today I made an effort to locate it as I'm solo-parenting at the moment & need to be prepared for the 1st Dec. And I can't find it! I know it's here somewhere..
I've managed to score a new Elf (he'll be a relative of some sort) and if the old one shows up we'll tackle it then. New Elf is currently hidden in car.
You know what? I don't drink anymore but I might grab a couple of coldies on the way home & see what happens. Might have to sample one to see if it's palatable.
There is an internal opportunity at work, right up my alley. The direct report is someone who I've really struggled to like. I can't fit more work on top of study/family/existing work, but its just for 6 months. I am tempted, because opportunity is fleeting and I might be able to slow down the study bit for that period of time.... arrggh. What do I do?
Personally, unless the pay was significantly higher, i wouldn't risk it. Working with someone I couldn't like would make it that much easier to burn out
Vitamin and mineral content for cat food doesn't exist, just Crude Ash % (which is the % of vitamins and minerals after incineration). I found a whole metric fuckton of vetmed papers detailing the minimum requirements for cats, but no packaging has a breakdown of what vitamins and minerals they contain.
I don't want to google every bloody ingredient.
Interestingly, Fancy Feast and Purina are much more transparent than Dine or Fussy Cat. Thanks Nestle, I guess lol
Itโs really hard to work out what food is good. The high protein grain free โpaleoโ ones are decent though, as grain fillers can mean cats get hungry again fast (like us with Chinese food) and it makes them chunky.
Itโs expensive especially on such a low income but I always make sure thereโs enough money budgeted to keep Melbcat on Taste Of The Wild for her allergies, and lucked into a fairly decent homebrand wet food she can eat.
More wet food is great idea as it hydrates and keeps them fuller and more nourished
Phew okay, so I literally just wrote out and took photos of all the food Mickey gets:
Dine wet food is the worst: it does not indicate at all what the Crude Ash % NOR Crude Fibre % is, so difficult to determine whether it has all vitamins and minerals, however the ingredient list, while small, does contain Taurine. And the ingredients are easy enough to Google.
Fancy Feast/Purina wet food is way more transparent, with crude ash, crude fat, crude fibre, and crude protein % listed, as well as having a detailed ingredient list that can be googled as well.
Fussy Cat Grain Free Dry Food (salmon, whitefish, olive oil flavour, 2.5kg bag) is okay, but also does not list crude ash % either, and while they do have an ingredient list it is quite vague (e.g. it lists Meat Meal but it could be poultry, fish, or beef derived). However, this brand does contain Omega Fatty Acids 3 and 6, which is not recognised as essential nutrients for cats by the AAFCO Cat Food Nutrient Profiles.
I think the better brands would be Hills Science Diet, however Mickey did not like it.
Trying to provide a well balance diet for cats is difficult due to each cat being very individual (same with humans, some can eat heaps of junk food and be fine, whereas other humans would get sick). It involves heaps of research to work out the best diet your cat can handle, which can be assisted by vet recommendations.
Contrary to popular belief, Vets are not paid by the cat food companies to shill food, they get maybe a branded notepad and pen, or merch. So a vet who specialises in cat diets, based on blood work, is almost essential for cats with diet issues (be it over or under weight, emesis, diarrhea, lethargy, etc).
I do not recommend a raw food diet, as it's basically inviting in salmonella. If you wish to cook your own food for your cat, first consult a holistic vet who will do blood work and assessments to determine what would be best nutritionally, and get human-grade meat cooked up to at least 60C to kill off salmonella, bacteria and pathogens.
May I ask where you were able to check the food out? I found CKD specific resources online for American foods but always struggle finding anything out about Aussie brands unless I email the manufacturer.
Thereโs the option of a vet nutritionist for safe balanced homemade diets if anyone wants to go that route. They have recipes to feed healthy cats without special needs (cheaper) and can make custom medical diet recipes for individual cats (expensive).
Note: Any homemade cat food recipes online should be avoided like the plague as they wonโt be balanced and not getting enough taurine can send your cat blind. Treats for occasional use might be ok but donโt improvise the main diet. Thatโs also the reason you canโt feed cats on dog food. Dogs can make their own taurine but cats canโt
I gathered most of this data just from the packaging, which is why I'm a tad sus of Dine now. If I Google anything, I tend to stipulate "Aus" in the search, as I don't trust the US websites (and they use imperial, which CBF converting), though they are prolly fine lol.
Vetmed documents (PDFs) are also available, though the tend to just state what a cat requires over whether which foods have what in them.
To understand what cats require of each mineral, vitamin, macronutrient, and amino acid (Taurine being an amino acid). I then used the manufacturers websites to determine whether it would contain these.
Avoid friskies if possible, I haven't looked into them, but it made Mickey very unwell.
When I had to switch my cat to an all-wet food diet recently I was talking to my vet about what I was feeding, and he said "oh Dine? Yes that's the yummiest wet food." It wasn't until I was on my way out that I started to wonder, um, how does he know??
Pfft tell that to Mickey, he's a fickle fae. Sometimes he loves dine, sometimes he's not interested, hence why I have both Dine and Fancy Feast, keeps it fresh for him hahaha
And I wouldn't be surprised at all if the Vet has tried it hahah but more likely they've just gathered that data from their clients lol
Engagement Engagement - news and content designed to instill fear, distrust, and hopelessness in the name of capitalism, profits, and division between social classes.
This place is threatened by the new, unclear laws. Very few people here would want to provide IDs just to have a safe space to vent, and even less of us would be willing to give up our anonymity to continue having a community (WhatsApp, telegram, signal, even texting).
It will only further our disconnection from a wholesome safe space. While I do have a few people blocked on this thread, I come here for safety, for connection, and to be kind to those of us who need that. We are all human, and humans are social animals, for the gubmint to take away our anonymity is to deny humans the social connections they require to maintain a semblance of stable mental health.
It's fucked up, the world, the government, the companies that seem intent on dividing us and removing our empathy to prevent us from organising and protesting. If we are too busy arguing with each other, then we cannot organise ourselves against the true evils of this world.
I don't have much to say to provide hope in these dark times, as I also feel the weight of the world and the fears they ellicit. But for now, we still have each other, and that's what I'm focusing on.
As a niece myself, who's aunts and uncles do not talk to me outside of family gatherings, nor provide financial assistance, I would prefer to spend more time with them, over them leaving me an inheritance and killing themselves.
As a daughter who's father helps monetarily, but does not otherwise talk to me outside of family gatherings, I would prefer to spend time with him over any money he gives me. I'd rather be homeless and destitute if only he would take an interest in me, or just even text...
What do you think your nibblings would prefer?
A) A large inheritance and sad memories of a troubled, burnt-out uncle who left the earth early
B) A inheritance and mediocre memories of an uncle who held no hope and prioritised working themself to death
C) maybe a smaller inheritance but wonderful memories of an uncle who was there for their weddings, there for their own children, and died of old age?
Don't answer to me, think about it. There is nuance, of course, as I don't know what you do outside of this thread. Just speaking from my own experience I suppose, so take it all with an ocean of salt. Nothing I say could ever change the way you see yourself or the future, but I suggest considering finding meaning in something other than "I must make lots of money to give my family".
I know what I would pick, personally. ๐คท๐ผโโ๏ธ
It doesnโt include online gaming or YouTube if thatโs what youโre talking about. How do you feel about gaming or everyone making shitpost videos for each other to comment on?
Theyโre being frustratingly vague and contradictory but I see messaging and โeducationalโ platforms may be exempt so trying to work out how to rules lawyer this shit
Sounds like you are struggling. Yeah thereโs some bad stuff out there but also lots of good. To live well we need to not fixate on things we canโt change. Thatโs a death spiral of frustration and anxiety and anger and overwhelm. Please reach out to people or services if you need to! For this forum, do you mean the SM age legislation? We donโt yet know exactly how it will work and I reckon with the speed that the government moves it could still be ages away until they figure out the tech required. And Iโm sure some smart peoples will have some very easy solutions for how to stay anonymous anyways. I donโt think we are doomed, not right now anyway.
BTW Iโm not entirely opposed to some controls on what kids can view in the internet, there is some nasty stuff out there that is really bad for the mental health of kids. I donโt know what the sensible compromise is though.
Woolrest and pillows washed. Sheets are just going on. Too bad the machine is too small to fit the doona, that'll have to wait for its 6 monthly wash. Windows all open and the place is being aired out. Bracing for tomorrow.
I once had the genius idea that I should bolt a cupholder to the handle of the mower for mowerbeers. But then the realisation that the vibrations would turn it into a flat frothing mess put that one to bed.
Unless I just put a nice single malt there instead... ๐ค
Some time ago on a lovely Saturday morning, I decided to do full on gardening. Weeding, trimming branches on trees, mowing..all that jazz. My reward was a cheeky beer when I felt I accomplished a fair bit. So off I went, starting at about 10:30 am. Felt like I was working for a solid 4-5 hours and had probably 4-5 beers. Realised I was a bit tipsy when all was done....and it was about 12:30. Managed to do all the work and get fairly sloshed.
Had a nap and woke up at like 4 pm with a mild hangover.
I need to do some gardening tonight, so I'm dangling the soju carrot to make sure I get it done. No gardening, no soju. Soju while gardening is a possibility. Jelly sake for the boyo.
Few teachers I've spoken to reckon they come in under prepared because they don't have classroom experience (and don't use uni stuff, all they learn is in the classrom). Just seems silly when it's so important for learning to be able to do the planning and get the experience.
I feel like my creativity is really suffering. Iโve tried to do more technical art exercises instead, I have really good references ready to go that will help me practice specific things, I have cheap materials I donโt mind burning through and Iโm kind of starting to understand the concepts.
Iโm just too sad and stressed out to do the work. Which can be repetitive, rigorous and carry the fear of failure.
Itโs this stressful depressing environment. Iโm constantly fielding other peopleโs craziness and bullshit to protect myself and have no energy left over for what I actually want to do.
And now a lot of stuff that used to be more stable is changing in unpredictable ways so it kind of worsens it
I dunno man, I did repot my neglected rosemary plant yesterday and ate some squares of dark chocolate today. Iโm working to try and improve my life no matter how bad it gets
I did a bit of gardening early and still ended up dripping with sweat. It's one of the worst things about wearing glasses - just sweating is not so bad, but it drips onto your glasses. I did get a bit of weeding done and planted some potatoes (and harvested a few from another patch too) so that's something. Hopefully I will be able to get a bit done tomorrow, but it is predicted to be pretty wet so it might not be possible.
Best of Sun Rockabilly lp. the singing cuts right through me ๐ถ no hobbits. I'm throwing that lp away.
Next up. Songs of the Sea by William Clauson. Title is a homage/pun on Sons of the Sea, a very famous sea shanty of the 19th C. we know it best as "Sons of the 'Scray" the anthem of Footscray FC.
It's a nice record and TIL about "fo'c'sle songs", songs off duty sailors sing

So the solution to being overworked from the general manager is:
Wait for it:
FUCKING TIME MANAGEMENT!!!
because of course im sitting around jerking off all day and not busting my ass the whole time.
I'm out as soon as I have a new offer. I don't want them to match it.
Now they get what they pay for. The pace slows to match the salary.

There are no penalties for parents or kids that flout this, kids can easily get around it with parents ids or vpns, and Albanese even admits that they will and that them being able to is beside the point. Soโฆ what is the point? Itโs just performative security theatre and a convenient excuse to increase surveillance.

::: spoiler Art rambles/what I bought yesterday
Looking over my purchases.
A $3 bottle of fluoro yellow poster paint.

Seagoon_@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 1y
fun is awesome ๐
TheWitchofThornbury@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 1y
I believe it's possible to make your own gesso - there must be some recipies out there on the net. Dunno if cheaper, but might be better quality. Artists generally not being super rich and are creative.
melbaboutown@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 1y
Oh it absolutely is. I remember seeing something about using leftover latex house paint and perhaps chalk. But thatโs a fair effort
Edit: actually checked and thereโs a recipe thatโs more doable but I donโt have a large enough quantity of white acrylic paint and donโt want to use glue as it can yellow.
Anko gesso is very cheap - itโs just acquiring goods thatโs annoying

Vitamin and mineral content for cat food doesn't exist, just Crude Ash % (which is the % of vitamins and minerals after incineration). I found a whole metric fuckton of vetmed papers detailing the minimum requirements for cats, but no packaging has a breakdown of what vitamins and minerals they contain.
I don't want to google every bloody ingredient.
Interestingly, Fancy Feast and Purina are much more transparent than Dine or Fussy Cat. Thanks Nestle, I guess lol
Seagoon_@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 1y
I'm wondering if the cat food Ted loves, fussy cat dry food, is bad for him, he's become so fat. I'm weaning him off it and onto mostly wet food.
melbaboutown@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 1y
Itโs really hard to work out what food is good. The high protein grain free โpaleoโ ones are decent though, as grain fillers can mean cats get hungry again fast (like us with Chinese food) and it makes them chunky.
Itโs expensive especially on such a low income but I always make sure thereโs enough money budgeted to keep Melbcat on Taste Of The Wild for her allergies, and lucked into a fairly decent homebrand wet food she can eat.
More wet food is great idea as it hydrates and keeps them fuller and more nourished
Edit: I use https://www.petfoodreviews.com.au/ but unfortunately it only seems to review dry foods
StudChud@aussie.zone · 1 pts · 1y
Wet food is essential for hydration as well.
melbaboutown@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 1y
StudChud@aussie.zone · 1 pts · 1y
I gathered most of this data just from the packaging, which is why I'm a tad sus of Dine now. If I Google anything, I tend to stipulate "Aus" in the search, as I don't trust the US websites (and they use imperial, which CBF converting), though they are prolly fine lol.
Vetmed documents (PDFs) are also available, though the tend to just state what a cat requires over whether which foods have what in them.
I used this https://www.msdvetmanual.com/management-and-nutrition/nutrition-small-animals/nutritional-requirements-of-small-animals#Energy_v3328508
And this (and it's source FEDIAF) https://www.vpets.com.au/2021/01/nutrient-requirements-for-cats/#%3A%7E%3Atext=There+are+several+minerals+that%2Censure+the+quality+of+milk.

StudChud@aussie.zone · 1 pts · 1y

๐คท๐ผโโ๏ธ

Never again.

Legit question - why isn't education/teaching an apprenticeship instead of a 4 year (mostly) theoretical degree?

because they want it to be a respected academic based profession, not just looking after kids
