I just got a lecture on how that type is meal is unhealthy

my suggestion to serve themselves less carbs if they don't want so much carbs did not go down well , ( everyone in this house serves themselves )

apparently I should cook meals where a person should be able to serve themselves as much as they want

Bit concerned for Queensland with the coming cyclone. Sounds like it might be very destructive. Hope everyone can stay safe.

just_kitten@aussie.zone · 7 pts · 1y (1 reply)

Been thinking a lot about friends and family there. It's looking very serious and worse than the usual floods and ex cyclones/tropical lows they get there. They haven't had a real cyclone hit them bang on since what, 1974? They're not as used to this as FNQ or the Pacific islands but I hope there won't be any deaths at least.

SituationCake@aussie.zone · 6 pts · 1y

Huge population growth since then, lots more people at risk of being affected now.

So lent-ish, I'm giving up browsing reddit for the rest of the month. There's plenty of more useful things I could do with my spare time than keep up to date with the high quality doom scrolling that's available these days. Bottom_racer@aussie.zone · 7 pts · 1y

PeelerSheila@aussie.zone · 1 pts · 1y (2 replies)

Ah damn! And I took the 3DS games to EB for a trade :( I've still got some DS games left because they're not opening trade for those until later in the year, but I think they're stuff like Transformers etc. I can let you know if you like?

Duenan@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 1y

It's good, unless you had something like Mario Golf World Tour or Kirby's Epic Yarn I can't think of anything I really wanted unless I saw the list.

I'm pretty ok with DS games I think as I've collected most of the obscure ones for myself awhile ago.

I finally bit the bullet and ordered some supplies to reupholster my couch & armchairs. I've been dithering for years over whether I want to spend the money doing that or just buy a new one. I have gotten to the stage of putting everything into the cart and seeing the total a few times, decided it was too much and started looking at new couches instead. Then I decide I quite like my couch and don't really want the cheap junk I could buy for that price and circle back around to reupholstering again.

So now I have $840 worth of foam, webbing etc. ordered (I already have fabric) and fingers crossed I don't mess it up. Miss Meow should be happy with my decision anyway, as the set has an open wood frame which makes the space underneath a good napping spot.

Seagoon_@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 1y (2 replies)

Watch as many videos on YT about re-upholstering as you can

and good luck

I suggest taking lots of photos while you deconstruct the old upholstery and wearing strong tradie gloves

RustyRaven@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 1y (1 reply)

This one's fairly simple, it's basically square cushions on top of a wood frame, for both the seat and back. There is no shaping or any fabric attached to the frame.

The only complication is that the seat base is done with tension springs attached to a metal frame that don't seem to exist as replacement parts - I have found one supplier with something similar, but they don't stock the right length. I'm going to use elastic webbing instead, which I'm at least familiar with using from previous projects, although I've not done anything larger than a dining chair.

I'm mostly a bit nervous about getting the piping on the cushions right. There was someone in the sewing sub on reddit that posted their project the other day which was almost identical, with links to a YT video they used and recommended so I will watch that one.

Seagoon_@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 1y

I've done sofa cushions. If making self piping make sure the piping cord is very loose so it doesn't twist and so it bends easily, inside the tube, double stitch the corners with small stitches and cut the corners so they bend

are you making your own bias binding? Make the binding at least 5 cm wide

if buying sew in cord same goes, have it loose so it doesn't twist or bend, double sew corners and snip the corners

After about 15 years of service, my washing machine died last week. I am now the owner of a brand new washer! Old machine was a top loader and new one is a front loader, so there may be some trial and error to figure out my preferred wash cycles. Mount Washmore here I come. Good weather for drying too.

MeanElevator@aussie.zone · 5 pts · 1y (5 replies)

Front loader owner for the past 20 years.

Clean the door seals regularly. They can get clogged up with hair and other shmutz. Quick wipe around (and inside the grooves) once a week or and you're golden.

As CEO said, much, much less detergent.

Cycles - I've been using ones that go for 40-60 minutes generally. Never an issue with cleanliness and freshness. If it's a smart washer with lots of programs, ones specifically for towels are a must. Might take a bit longer but towels end up brilliant.

Oh, and front loaders are gentler on all fabrics :)

SituationCake@aussie.zone · 5 pts · 1y (2 replies)

Do you use any cleaning agent on the seals or just a damp cloth is enough?

CEOofmyhouse56@aussie.zone · 5 pts · 1y

No cleaning agent. Wipe them down with a damp cloth and leave the door and detergent compartment open when finished. Helps stop mould from forming.

Hygiene wash is important. Don't skip it.

MeanElevator@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 1y

Damp cloth does the job. You can use a bit of soapy water or something similar, but probably won't need it if cleaned regularly.

PeelerSheila@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 1y (1 reply)

I think shmutz is my new favourite word

MeanElevator@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 1y

It's great isn't it?

CEOofmyhouse56@aussie.zone · 5 pts · 1y (1 reply)

Congratulations! Front loaders only need a fraction of detergent compared to a top loader. Mine takes a tablespoon worth for a full load.

SituationCake@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 1y

That stuffs not cheap so thatโ€™s a pleasant bonus that I hadnโ€™t realised. I knew about the less power and water, but woohoo less detergent too!

dumblederp@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 1y

You don't need to use the max spin dry most of the time, it adds wear to your clothes.

Eagle@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 1y

Added to the other's comments, stick with powder detergent. For some reason the liquid made mine stinky. Switched back to powder and no smell.

Seagoon_@aussie.zone · 8 pts · 1y

Thank you Brion ๐Ÿ˜˜

Good night everyone. Sweet dreams. ๐Ÿฅฐ

So apparently my iron is low so I need to get on the supplements and also start eating a bit more medicinal red meat. I'm not a vegetarian any more but left to my own devices i can go a long time without (much) meat. So I have some stewing steak defrosting but I can't decide between a chilli con carne or an old fashioned stew (both instant pot so it doesn't heat up the place too much).....leaning towards the chilli......

Anyone got any good recipes?

CEOofmyhouse56@aussie.zone · 7 pts · 1y (7 replies)

Please consider braised steak and onions. Beef, onions and beef stock. Thicken it up at the end of cooking. Garlic, herbs optional. Paired it with mashed potato and steamed veg.

Some peeps put sauce in there. I do not.

For economical cuts velveting w/ bicarb really does wonders I've found, and can replace more expensive cuts easily without noticing.

MeanElevator@aussie.zone · 6 pts · 1y

Velveting is a great technique. Food court quality at home!!!!

All kidding aside, cheap beef is elevated beyond belief with this.

TheWitchofThornbury@aussie.zone · 6 pts · 1y (1 reply)

Kangaroo meatballs from (shudder!) colesworth. Very high in digestible iron. Don't fry them! Brown lightly and stew with vegies. If you can get hold of horsemeat, that's very high in iron too.
Also, once the weather gets a bit wetter/colder, look around for stinging nettles. The young tops are one of the highest sources of vegetable based iron. Wear rubber gloves to harvest, wash well and steam/microwave lightly until just wilted (which destroys the sting), chop, drain and use in any cooked spinach recipie. One of my fab faves as I love the nutty flavour. The iron content is a bonus. Easily grown in damp shade too.

imoldgreeeg@aussie.zone · 5 pts · 1y

Great advice thanks

SituationCake@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 1y

For beef stew I put leek, carrots, celery, stock, bay leaf, pepper and mixed herbs, a can or 2 of tomatoes and let cook until beef is tender. Depending on which stock you use you may need to add some extra salt or not, just give it a taste and adjust as needed. Can eat it on its own with some crusty bread or have it over mash potatoes. Making a curry is also a good way to slow cook beef, eg a massaman, rogan josh. Use a jar paste if you want quick prep, or if youโ€™re feeling gourmet you can make your own spice paste in a bigger batch and freeze.

StudChud@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 1y

I'm mostly a veggo, depending on circumstances. If I go out to eat I'll always get the vegetarian option, but at home I generally have quite a lot of chicken or fish.

I also tend to have low iron though. The worst I got was when I gave blood, and then got my period the day after. I was so fucked up I had to buy some iron supplements lol. I take one now if I have a vegetarian meal and it helps. It's crazy how a lack of iron can really fuck you up.

I'm always partial to chilli con carne - goes well with rice and cheese, and sour cream if you make it super spicy/hot. Can also have it on toast for brekky too!

It looks like technology companies have just given up on smart home stuff. There are no more smart clocks, smart displays, not even speakers side from Sonos. Everyone got sick of using these things and the world has moved on.

This means I can chuck out my smart clock with the broken cable. I can actually get rid of it completely! It's the cable that's broken, not the unit, and it's such a weird voltage and connector it's not worth trying to replace.

It's a bit of a shame to contribute to more ewaste. I might drop it off at one of the ewaste points at a library or office works. But it's nice to know I can let go of something. No holding onto a cable 'just in case'. No need to try get an otherwise perfectly fine unit to work, because I didn't use it anyway. I can actually throw this thing out, and there's no equivalent on the market to replace it with.

MeanElevator@aussie.zone · 5 pts · 1y

The small amount of waste you'll be contributing is very very small. The best thing you can do is avoid it in the future, which looks like you're doing.

All products have a life. Yours has it's turn now.

Yup. Due to a motorbike accident earlier in the day.

just_kitten@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 1y

I heard they had to close 3 lanes, must've been really awful...

just_kitten@aussie.zone · 7 pts · 1y

Managed to do a big clean in just 2 hours - wiping everything including the windowsills, scrubbing the bathtub, sinks and stove, moving empty heavy pots temporarily out of common area, massive vacuum and mop... As usual, nothing like last minute panic to finally get shit done that really didn't need to take that long after all...

Good thing is the REA actually seemed decent enough and not too anal about details, most importantly it seems like the short lease period was only because it was a lease break situation and not because they want to sell - so I can be confident of rolling onto a monthly situation til the end of my studies. No need to rush around looking for a friend to crash with for the last 1-2 months, but I can also bugger off afterwards fairly easily afterwards.

Now to just get to the end of this frigging degree...

So if the Reject Shop was like 10 times bigger; thatโ€™s what Panda Mart is?

Bottom_racer@aussie.zone · 10 pts · 1y (4 replies)

Panda Mart

Consumer affairs as of a few ours ago:

https://www.consumer.vic.gov.au/latest-news/panda-mart-public-warning

  • present an injury hazard, such as projectiles

  • present a choking or strangulation hazard

I'm struggling for puns here but it sounds like pandoras' box.

I wouldn't panda to their counter argument.

Inviting panda-monium into your life if you buy from them!

I'd love for that to be on my grave..

Anyone know exactly what's happening on the Hurstbridge/Mernda line? After the day I've had (boss informed us we're going back to office full-time for reasons of "productivity"), last thing I need is to spend ten bucks for a borked train line

Duenan@aussie.zone · 6 pts · 1y (5 replies)

Planned maintenance and renewal works keep trains running safely and reliably passengers for passengers.

Buses will replace trains on sections of the Hurstbridge Line between 31 January and 27 March.

Between Heidelberg and Eltham.

StudChud@aussie.zone · 6 pts · 1y (4 replies)

Busses replace trains, yet trains don't replace busses.

Riddle me that, Batman!

Seagoon_@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 1y (3 replies)

that new nothing phone 3a in blue has me questioning my phone sexuality. And at half the price of a new iphone its VERY tempting. How are google, samsung and apple producing the same shit year in year out with minimal upgrades charging such insane prices when this beautiful thing is innovative and so cheap?

Non starter anyway, nothing wrong with my phone. But when it does die... Why would I spend double the price of the nothing to just get another boring slab of steel and glass? Apples ecosystem is bloody nice. But Siri is still a disaster 5 years in, apple intelligence is DOA and if Steve Jobs were still around he'd have someone shot for the current state of iOS18.

dumblederp@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 1y (3 replies)

Looks good. My pixel5 is getting long in the tooth, and google is losing my respect as a company. I wish phones came with a case. It'd be such a minor addition for the manufacturer to include one.

TinyBreak@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 1y (2 replies)

yeah thats why I jumped ship to apple. Completely over googles BS. But Apple seems to be be stuck in a bit of a rut as well.

dumblederp@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 1y (1 reply)

iTunes kept me out of the apple ecosystem 20 odd years ago. I still manage my mp3s with directories.

TinyBreak@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 1y

Ah I jumped ship to spotify years ago. Now apple music for the better quality. Saves me a fortune of what I was paying in itunes for music.

Force_majeure123@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 1y

Just read a few review, looks awesome! When my current budget phone starts acting up I'd be looking for something exactly like that I reckon

briongloid@aussie.zone · 1 pts · 1y (1 reply)

I've been using the Nothing Phone 2a+ since the 3G shutdown, it's okay but a little bare bones compared to Xiaomi devices, which have significantly larger userbases.

Aside from the cheaper chipset, I mainly miss auto-HDR, I didn't realise how much of my phone use was the OS supporting HDR when the applications didn't themselves.

Like I said it's okay, but still probably my lowest value phone I've owned in the last decade, after having enjoyed highly competitive imports.

I also miss Dolby Atmos, which worked very well even on my Anker Soundcore earbuds.

TinyBreak@aussie.zone · 1 pts · 1y

I wouldnt ever use a Xiaomi. I understand why people do, but the experience just isnt there for me. the OS still looks like crap. they've toned it down a ton, but where Samsung evolved past the S1 UI design a lot of the Chinese manufacturers didnt fully.

theres also the concern of using a Chinese OS.

Anyone have a good substitute for Somersby ciders? Boyo has decided he doesn't want to drink them any more because reasons unrelated to taste, but wants something that tastes similar. He's tried Three Oak (okay) and Monteith (not a fan).

dumblederp@aussie.zone · 7 pts · 1y

I can't remember the brand but don't sleep on pear cider. As far as finding another brand, buy a 4/6pack of everything Dan's stocks over a few weeks / months, save a can or two of each, then eventually have a tasting session to compare them as a group. Works for any booze, I've done it for tequila and stout.

StudChud@aussie.zone · 6 pts · 1y

I had an obsession with Rekorderlig cider personally, their Pear cider is absolutely delicious!

Catfish@aussie.zone · 5 pts · 1y (4 replies)

Reasons? I like my cider dry. Recorderlig Passionfruit (skip the others) WilliecSmith Bone Dry. I think Somersby tends a bit sweeter

StudChud@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 1y (3 replies)

They don't call it "somersby stomach" for no reason ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚

Catfish@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 1y (1 reply)

Never heard the phrase. Am old??

StudChud@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 1y

Not sure if it's an age thing or region thing tbh. I mean, I'm 32 and hadnt heard the phrase until like, 10yrs ago from my cousin's ex (then gf). She's from SA though, so it could be an SA phrase ๐Ÿ˜‚

I'm so cold in the office today. I dress for the temperature outside but the air-con in this place is ridiculously strong. Plus there's a draft exactly where I sit as well making it worse. It would have to be under 20 degrees in here. It's nice right when you come back from outside, but not so much once you've cooled down. Need to remember to pack an office jacket for hot days.

Seagoon_@aussie.zone · 5 pts · 1y (1 reply)

::: spoiler Day/cat rambles Ugh. I really donโ€™t feel good. Itโ€™s been a high pain day. The most I managed today was to sort out Melbcatโ€™s needs, run the mini dishwasher once, and give the wilting plants some water.

Iโ€™m running out of the little fancy tins and sachets that were meant to entice catling and forgot to get more so just opened one of the bigger generic tinsโ€ฆ and sheโ€™s happily been eating that again! Even with meds mixed in. Maybe the strong fishiness of the dark tuna mince covers it up. Or maybe sheโ€™s just a faddy eater.

ย  :::

::: spoiler Donation rambles

There is so much crap in my house that isnโ€™t useful for meโ€ฆ

I think Iโ€™m going to donate this can of dry shampoo. I bought it for bad fatigue days but the scent has changed drastically from years ago and is now overpowering. I already had to be careful using aerosols but the perfume is just too much. Itโ€™s clean, new, only used a couple of sprays so maybe someone else might like it.

Same with this soap I used to use. Itโ€™s feeling a lot harsher on my skin and I now prefer a different brand so maybe the unopened boxes can go to the community pantry. The used bar is next in line for hand soap duty and the opened but untouched bar can be wrapped in leftover Xmas paper and labeled with the brand.

The crop bras I dislike too. The sub-variety of Ensure drinks that contain an aggravating ingredient. A few other toiletries that arenโ€™t getting used.

All of these would work just fine for someone else.

These jeans get one more wash and if they still smell they are gone.

Itโ€™s a massive pain in the butt that I had to unravel the string bagโ€ฆ it took me a month and was almost doneโ€ฆ but I might start again to finish the yarn. Hopefully I can get the hang of holding the yarn properly and learn how to work with that really fast rhythm. :::
