They aren’t even the first to do this.. pretty sure I’ve done something similar, and I’m a fucken nobody..

This is done for the Code of Honor. Basically, to avoid patents being used against the gaming industry, video game companies file patents for a lot of different game design concept, so all developers can freely implement these mechanics without getting sued.

I saw another video about this, Nintendo pretty much never sues anyone on gaming patents. They do sue a lot for other stuff though, like piracy or protecting IP / copyright.
