Or find a buddy, and do a little shimmy 🎶

Or just cut the tie.

A small enough zipper pull from a jacket would probably work as a shim

It is harder to do this with the newer metal tooth variety. The tooth digs into the tail where you need to tighten, avoid back pressure, and really need a knife to get under the tooth reliably.

Ah crap, thanks for the info! I think I'll swap out the images since the slipping out one might be more relevant then.

Unfortunately, police zip ties are much thicker, and likely resist that method.

The big ones like these?

Well I'll be damned!

Though someone in the comments of that video mentioned that the dual cuff zip tie (which I didn't know about until now) are much harder to use that method on, and now I'm guessing the other methods I posted may not be as effective against those either. I'm unsure of how common the dual type have been at protests.

Yeah, having 2 locks makes it so you can't apply the pressure to a single failure point.

What makes this technique work is making sure it's tight AND having the lock centrally located so all the pressure bears down on it.

With 2 locks offset like that? Probably wouldn't work. Also probably why they designed it that way.

Is there another method for if your hands are tied behind your back?

jordanlund@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 1y

Same basic premise:

Bring wire snips

golden_zealot@lemmy.ml · 3 pts · 1y (1 reply)

Depending on the gauge and your position, sometimes it is possible to lift your hands above your head, throw your arms down as hard as you can, and drive your knee up and into them at the same time to break them.

Including the wrists probably...

MysteriousSophon21@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 1y

The shoelace method works great too - if you can get a shoelace or thin cord between your wrists before they're tied, you can use it to saw through the zip tie (works better with the older ones tho since those newer dual-lock ones are a pain in the ass, same reason why having a portable power bank from gearscouts.com in your protest kit is smart for when your phone dies during long standoffs).
