Think of it like a kick scooter. You can walk, sure, but kick scooter is much more fun and faster, and one kick and it will roll for a distance. Flintstone car is the same way, they can stop running and the car can still roll for a distance.

You haven't actually watched the Flintstones then. They aren't sitting in that thing, they are standing upright with nothing to hold them up, so they can't coast at all.

Blue_Morpho@lemmy.world · 58 pts · 364d (1 reply)

Watch it some more. They are chairs that their feet dangle out the bottom. The angle and drawing in the intro makes it seem like there's no seat. But in other scenes it's clearly there.

Lmao, I know we can barely see him in this pic, but Dino's character design is pure comedy gold.

psx_crab@lemmy.zip · 4 pts · 364d (3 replies)

Hmm you're right, granted the last time i watch flintstone is...25 years ago?

But it still act like a cart and could hold stuff in that case.

Lemminary@lemmy.world · 6 pts · 364d (2 replies)

They do sit down, run for a bit and then raise their feet. I remember it clearly because I put too much thought into that as a kid. Lol

ApollosArrow@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 364d (1 reply)

I’m surprised they didn’t just have an animal doing the running for them.

mushroomman_toad@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 2 pts · 363d

it's a reflection of 1960s ubiquitous car culture, to Americans in the 1960's, automobiles were thought as the only practical form of transportation

Vespair@lemmy.zip · 20 pts · 364d

This is the joke. How is this meme making fun of what is already clearly the intentional joke of the show?

This isn't even low hanging fruit, this is picking through the rotten scraps on the ground.

itsgroundhogdayagain@lemmy.ml · 18 pts · 364d (1 reply)

He runs while sitting. Somehow.

yermaw@sh.itjust.works · 15 pts · 364d

You ever seen a toddler in a cozy coupe?

My knees ache and my ankle pops just looking at them

tanisnikana@lemmy.world · 13 pts · 364d (4 replies)

That’s what always bothered me about those cars—let’s push all this shit in a sitting position when we don’t really need to! But also it’s a parody, so I’m takin’ the piss.

FaceDeer@fedia.io · 31 pts · 364d (2 replies)

Actually, it does make sense to have a "vehicle" like this. We had them in real life, the precursors to bicycles were "dandy horse" and they operated by similar principles. Basically, the wheels of the vehicle allow you to "coast", maintaining the velocity you've built up with less effort.

The specific design of the Flintstones' vehicles is silly, yes. The posture is inefficient and the giant stone wheels would be a bitch to get up to speed. But that's just artistic license, IMO. You could build a four-wheeled version of the dandy horse and it'd be a reasonable vehicle for getting around in a place without any significant inclines.

tanisnikana@lemmy.world · 7 pts · 364d

Actually shit yeah, that’s cool. Basically the same principles as a skateboard, really.

It's because he's a quadzilla with undeveloped glutes. Explosive and significant short term power but incapable of extended endurance.

Cruxifux@feddit.nl · 11 pts · 364d (4 replies)

You should cross post this to fuckcars

GreenKnight23@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 364d

instantly banned for talking about cars.

PartyAt15thAndSummit@lemmy.zip · 4 pts · 364d (1 reply)

Yabba dabba doo that then.

Cruxifux@feddit.nl · 1 pts · 364d

I was going to but then I realized that I don’t know how to do that.

thatradomguy@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 364d

Was just thinking I'm surprised this ain't over there. lol

Zenorbi@lemmy.world · 11 pts · 364d (7 replies)

What bothered me more is the steering. How is that supposed to steer? The front wheel is just wedged into the frame.

jaupsinluggies@feddit.uk · 6 pts · 364d

He's American so there aren't any curves for him to worry about.

If he needs to turn at an intersection he could just pick it up like a trapbar and rotate.

baguettefish@discuss.tchncs.de · 5 pts · 364d

drifting with your feet

Patches@ttrpg.network · 4 pts · 364d (2 replies)

There was only one road back then. Didn't need to steer.

elfin8er@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 364d (1 reply)

And it's 2d.

prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 2 pts · 363d

And it was actually just the same bit of road copy/pasted over and over

Honytawk@lemmy.zip · 1 pts · 363d

One side runs forward, the other side backwards

burntbacon@discuss.tchncs.de · 1 pts · 364d

I always thought the steering wheel was wedged into the frame like everything else, so it basically bent the two anterior-posterior aligned pieces. That would look something like:

\
/____/

from the top. I can't really depict the way that it would bend the two rollers, but it would turn in a manner similar to the way the big fire engines with the rear and front steering wheels work.

I can't handle the lines in the wood only being dark in the top panel.

germtm_@lemmy.world · 6 pts · 364d

it's the power of inertia.

CustardFist@feddit.nl · 4 pts · 364d

“No, I yabba dabba don’t.”

cholesterol@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 364d

That is indeed the joke.

HugeNerd@lemmy.ca · 3 pts · 364d

Or ask the Great Gazoo for a new car?

doingthestuff@lemy.lol · 3 pts · 364d

It's 25km of roads with no shoulder or bike lanes, no sidewalk, high speed limits, curvy with heavy truck traffic and lots of little crosses on the side of the road. But sure. Why can't I just run to work?

nexguy@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 363d

Yeah go all the way to work without your car...ok buddy
