I can recommend switching to reading books. An e-reader with mild backlight is ideal for this use-case as you can keep the room pitch black and still be able to read. My time to fall asleep and rate of early wakeups has plummeted since I made the switch
Depends. When I can't sleep it's usually because I'm thinking too much. Then I look at my phone for like 15min and that usually help shutting my brain up
I'll jump in to plug Red Moon. It applies an overlay of a color of your choice and enables you to dim your backlight beyond what is normally possible. If you are in a fully darkened room, overlaying an orange/red color and dimming your screen to barely readable levels to read something can trick you into becoming sleepy by tiring your eyes.
