Tell them this is the second best Sci-Fi/Fantasy movie you've seen.

When they ask for the first best, tell them "Eragon"

Why has nobody ever made a good movie out of those books?

burntbacon@discuss.tchncs.de · 1 pts · 323d

Because blue fantasy is notoriously hard to make palatable in a movie format, and a 15 year old kid writing blue fantasy mixed with hackney tropes is definitely not good material to pull it off. The first book was a decently fun romp, and then the rest were just meh.

I loved Eragon as a kid. I read all the books in release. The movie was so embarrassingly bad even for my ten year self.

I honestly liked the books too. But I also know they aren't exactly literary masterpieces and I had to think of something to juxtapose against LOTR :) ... and then there's the movies 😵

Interrupt 5 minutes into Fellowship during Isildur's death scene throwing your hands up in the air saying "I'm sorry, I'm having trouble suspending disbelief here. Isildur, supposedly descended from the bloodline of Númenor, was taken in and controlled by a wish dot com version of Celebrimbor's craftsmanship? Come on! I can't watch this garbage any longer."

Wait until it's quiet. And then: "Oh, I get it! It's like Game of Thrones for babies!"

“A dwarf and elf in love? See! It’s just like the Hobbit movies.”

“Is the Balrog like Smaug?”

“Is Aragorn supposed to be Bard’s son?”

"Why are the hobos so small?"

"Is there plumbing in these holes?"

"I think Dumbledore would kick his ass."

"So why are the elves tall? I thought elves were small."

I once saw a list of "things to say during a LOTR screening". Sadly the only one I remember is: when the Ents are marching to war, stand up and shout "run forrest, run!"

cerement@slrpnk.net · 11 pts · 324d

so, after the nine-hour New Zealand travel documentary, can we now watch LotR?

@PugJesus diabolical! 😂

I guess that that's what Billy Butcher is. His actor is also Eomer (I believe) in the Lord of the Rings movies, so very fitting.

Karl Urban

FerretyFever0@fedia.io · 2 pts · 324d

Yep, that's him.

ryan2one3@mstdn.ca · 3 pts · 324d

@FerretyFever0 @PugJesus yup, Eomer. That's why I used that specific gif. 😀

What's the turmoil exactly? The Hobbit movies were advertised as prequels (and way overblown, sadly).

Hazmatastic@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 324d

Calling it the Sequels implies that The Hobbit is the Originals, which is typically considered superior in many canons, versus the more popular mindset of LOTR being the Original and then The Hobbit the afterthought Prequels
