I can’t wait for the bottom to fall out from under all this AI bullshit…

There's a microscopic chance they accidentally make it better because for the last 10+ years it's hard to find apps even when you know the name and publisher.

I have mostly relied on third party sites where you can filter for apps without ads, or even better use F-Droid.

I feel like Google and Microsoft are speedrunning the enshittification, which is great because it will make it easier to convince EU lawmakers that they need to be stopped and or replaced. If they had continued slowly boiling us, then this would have become much harder.

MS desperately wants everyone on windows 11 so thier copilot, AI can be shoved down everyones throat, so they can datamine all your activity and sell it to stave off when the bubble burst. and google on the pixel since 6-10.

CurbCuts@lemmy.ca · 1 pts · 310d

It's funny that MS's push for Windows 11 is just pushing people away to Linux.

Had to install play store a couple days ago to get a banking app. If I spent 5 more mins doing that, I would have gotten a seizure from the amount of ads and garbage on that. It feels almost illegal and surprising how many people seem perfectly fine with that.

I did tech support on the phone and sometimes I needed to guide people into installing the RSA Authenticator app for 2FA. I ended up describing the icon just to be sure people would install the right app, because even if they type its full name, the sponsored result will be first, and it's not what we want.

I type the EXACT name of what I want and the store still proposes another app as the first result. Such a frustrating user experience.

Man if it not the best sponsor ad, I get straight up spam, garbage and spyware suggested 24/7

Aurora Store can be used in place of the Play Store.

No ads or other shit. You just download and install your apps and move on with your day.

That's what I always do but some banking apps refuses to run if it is not from play store.

reactionality@lemmy.sdf.org · 1 pts · 311d

Just wish it had 100% uptime. Every once in a while downloads will start failing for no good reason.

You get ads on official apps from your banks?

besselj@lemmy.ca · 18 pts · 311d

More dark patterns. Lovely.

Can someone PLEASE get on with making a Linux distro for phones that just works.

teolan@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 310d (1 reply)

We have that the issue is not mobile apps target Linux

Hazor@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 309d

Theoretically, how hard would it be to port Android apps to a Linux phone distro (disregarding that closed source apps simply wouldn't get ported without a meaningful market share)? Or to make a sort of Android compatibility layer for Linux phone?

jerkface@lemmy.ca · 14 pts · 311d (1 reply)

No longer a concern now that Google has excluded all sane and self-respecting uses from their app store.

JandroDelSol@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 310d

so like maybe 1% lol

GreenKnight23@lemmy.world · 11 pts · 311d

glad I left that shit two years ago.

fodor@lemmy.zip · 9 pts · 311d

They will never, ever, let you filter out everything that has ads or costs money. Their AI will never be that smart.

Blackmist@feddit.uk · 8 pts · 311d (3 replies)

This is a big change.

They used to design it around advertising.

ruuster13@lemmy.zip · 2 pts · 310d

Do you think "timely cultural content" is something other than AI ads?

fodor@lemmy.zip · 1 pts · 310d (1 reply)

Used to?

Blackmist@feddit.uk · 1 pts · 310d

They still do too.

Tollana1234567@lemmy.today · 6 pts · 310d

MS and GOOGLE know the bubble is about to burst, thier forcing all thier AI into everything to stem the bleeding of money.

quick_snail@feddit.nl · 2 pts · 311d (1 reply)

To make it easier to identify and avoid apps with ai, right?

Like GMO labling at grocery stores?

callcc@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 311d

You bet!

phoenixz@lemmy.ca · 1 pts · 309d

Whoooo, as of o needed even more reasons to step away from Google?

I feel more and more that in becoming a luddite when it comes to phones and such, which is weird for a developer, i guess

I want to use the phone as a tool, make calls, send emails, watch some videos sometimes, not be a data harvesting machine
