In reversal, Coast Guard again classifies swastikas, nooses as hate symbols

https://www.washingtonpost.com/national-security/2025/11/21/coast-guard-policy-hate-symbols-swastika/?pwapi_token=eyJ0eXAiOiJKV1QiLCJhbGciOiJIUzI1NiJ9.eyJyZWFzb24iOiJnaWZ0IiwibmJmIjoxNzYzNzAxMjAwLCJpc3MiOiJzdWJzY3JpcHRpb25zIiwiZXhwIjoxNzY1MDgzNTk5LCJpYXQiOjE3NjM3MDEyMDAsImp0aSI6IjA5MmI2MjEyLTg4ODctNGFlNi05ZTRmLWVmNWJiNGNjMzdmNSIsInVybCI6Imh0dHBzOi8vd3d3Lndhc2hpbmd0b25wb3N0LmNvbS9uYXRpb25hbC1zZWN1cml0eS8yMDI1LzExLzIxL2NvYXN0LWd1YXJkLXBvbGljeS1oYXRlLXN5bWJvbHMtc3dhc3Rpa2EvIn0.SKiLXVMUDyvcJ08Vtx5f_iHGSot5UEHE_eJhfpw9sTU

The new order came hours after The Post reported the service would instead classify such symbols as “potentially divisive” under guidelines set for release next month.

Just yesterday, they had decided to take them off their list of hate symbols. But Americans, unlike Republicans, don't like Nazis.

And yet all the totenkopfs and SS runes will continue to be ignored. Sorry, "punisher skulls" and "really cool lightning bolts"

Still. Good to see that there is A line. Even if it is one mostly built around decorum rather than actually caring about white supremacy.

hannesh93@feddit.org · 33 pts · 260d (8 replies)

Tbf even if it IS the punisher skull that's still a massive dogwhistle.

I have yet to meet someone showcasing that that also wasn't showing fascist tendencies...

SarcasticMan@lemmy.world · 32 pts · 260d (3 replies)

These are the people Frank would be hunting.

nondescripthandle@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 14 pts · 260d (2 replies)

I need to watch the new Daredevil because I've been told theres a big beautiful punisher battle for those of us that realize the punisher would kick the shit out of LEOs that use his imagery.

DragonTypeWyvern@midwest.social · 3 pts · 259d (1 reply)

It's a part of his show too

nondescripthandle@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 2 pts · 259d

Word, I haven't kept up since the Disney plus move, love the Jon Bernthal Fank Castle though.

Lushed_Lungfish@lemmy.ca · 4 pts · 259d (2 replies)

I seriously don't understand why folks in law enforcement and the military use the Punisher imagery.

To be fair, I am in the military (not the American one though) and I like the Punisher comics and films.

But the Punisher represents the absolute FAILURE of the system. As law enforcement and military, WE are the supposed to be the system. Using those colours implies that we are failures. I don't believe that's a good place to be starting from.

skulblaka@sh.itjust.works · 3 pts · 258d

Frank himself (or at least his authors) agree.

faduda@mastodon.ie · 1 pts · 259d

@Lushed_Lungfish @hannesh93

They've got skulls.

They didn't really think past that.

greybeard@feddit.online · 3 pts · 259d

I made a kick ass punisher Windows XP theme way back. But thay was when the movie came out and I just thought the black and white theme and skull start button looked cool.

Theprogressivist@lemmy.world · 46 pts · 260d

Who would've thought this would blow up in their faces? /s

logicbomb@lemmy.world · 41 pts · 260d (1 reply)

I commented on the previous story how I was surprised that they did the Nazi symbols at the same time as the Confederate symbols, essentially admitting that they have almost the same meaning. A racist with even the tiniest shred of intelligence would do the Confederate symbols first and the Nazi ones later.

And now here we are, the Nazi symbols are back on the list, but nobody is talking about the Confederate symbols.

Adderbox76@lemmy.ca · 14 pts · 260d

A racist with even the tiniest shred of intelligence

Well I think I see the problem...

"We're going to allow Nazis into the U.S. military unless there's enough pushback."

Could our federal government be more pathetic? Is it even possible?

billwashere@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 259d

Well they already have increased their employment opportunities by allowing them in ICE…. this was just further expansion.

mkwt@lemmy.world · 30 pts · 260d (3 replies)

I think it bears mentioning that the Coast Guard is the only military service branch organized under Dept. of Homeland Security, rather than Dept. of Defense.

AcidiclyBasicGlitch@sh.itjust.works · 2 pts · 259d (2 replies)

They're the only military branch so far

Also might be worth noting that thanks to 287(g):

The 287(g) Program allows your law enforcement agency to enforce certain aspects of U.S. immigration law, expanding your department’s authority to: •Identify and process removable aliens with pending or active criminal charges. •Enforce limited immigration authorities with ICE oversight during routine duties. •Serve and execute administrative warrants on removable aliens in your jail.

In some states, national guard and local law enforcement branches are already officially partnered with ICE/DHS, and with task forces like the one in Memphis you have a shit ton of local and federal agencies all partnering together under DHS.

What federal agencies are in Memphis Safe Task Force? Here's all of them and what they do

Department of Defense,

Department of Treasury

Department of Justice

Department of Health and Human Services

Department of Housing and Urban development

Department of Homeland Security

Department of Transportation

U.S. Marshalls

FBI

ATF

DEA

Homeland Security Investigations

U.S. Attorney for the Western District of TN.

Tennessee partnerships with ICE multiply as feds offer $14B in incentives nationwide. 48 state and local law enforcement agencies have entered into agreements with the Trump administration to enforce immigration laws

mkwt@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 259d (1 reply)

Yep. And remember folks, every secret service, FBI, DEA, or ATF agent out on the streets abducting brown people is one less agent working their regular counterfeiting, terrorism, public corruption, money laundering, drug trafficking, or weapons cases.

AcidiclyBasicGlitch@sh.itjust.works · 1 pts · 259d

I can definitely see the concern there, but I also question who is left to be redirected to these roles at this point besides Trump loyalists?

lemmylump@lemmy.world · 29 pts · 260d

But secretly they won't.

MisterOwl@lemmy.world · 19 pts · 260d (1 reply)

"Not as popular as we hoped it would be, we'll try again in a few months."

frunch@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 260d

Right? The blowback will be minimal though it makes you wonder what other kinds of initiatives they're playing around with behind the scenes... It's great they reversed it but why the fuck did they ever make it ok in the first place?!

Formfiller@lemmy.world · 13 pts · 259d

The fact that this was even entertained is proof we’re in deep into Nazi land. Guillotine for president 2028!

hateisreality@lemmy.world · 6 pts · 259d (3 replies)

Fucking DHS is the problem child

the_crotch@sh.itjust.works · 3 pts · 259d (1 reply)

Exactly. Trump is not the source of our problems, he is the inevitable result of policies that bush started and Obama/Biden did nothing to scale back. DHS is one example out of many.

hateisreality@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 259d

Gotta go further back to Regan and Nixon...the Republicans were pissed they couldn't do the things they are doing now....Regan's lawyers were Bush's lawyers are supreme court justices now

They realised people would draw graffiti of Nazis being hanged I see

AcidiclyBasicGlitch@sh.itjust.works · 4 pts · 259d

"Lol you guyz! J/k of course, it was a prank. The look on your face right now lol. You really should lighten up and learn how to take a joke..."

I'm envisioning a Nazi goose-stepping at someone who has their back to them, but every time they turn around to see what the goose-stepping and weird chanting/singing is all about, the Nazi acts completely oblivious and innocent. Once their back is turned it starts up again, coming closer and closer until the goose-stepping Nazi is breathing down their neck.

Eventually we're going to have to choose between pretending we don't know there's a goose-stepping Nazi breathing down our necks until after he stomps us into the ground, or we're going to have to turn around, and demand he takes off his uniform before we accidentally "overreact," and punch him in the face.

AllNewTypeFace@leminal.space · 3 pts · 259d

So the USCGC Eagle isn’t getting its original name back after all?

melsaskca@lemmy.ca · 1 pts · 259d

At least 15 Coast Guard administrators broke their legs due to jumping off and on the fence repeatedly.

kreskin@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 258d

Trump and Israel seem to have broken America at some fundamental level.

manuallybreathing@lemmy.ml · -8 pts · 259d (5 replies)

When they first banned the swastika in australia (2023?), nazis posted photos of them holding shields with 30 different nazi symbols on them.

Classifying these things as hate sumbols does nothing, but it will shortly turn around and outlaw communist symbols.

lol did i just say at first they came for the swastika? But seriously the people who initially pushed for these laws are racist cretins who want nazis marching beside them, under national flags.

ripcord@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 259d

Oh shut up

Madison420@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 259d

What it does in this context is make it a criminal act to get tattooed under ucmj. If they get caught with patches or drawing it or whatever they get enhanced punishments because of what it is.

What taking away the classification did is make it so it was no longer illegal to decorate military property with swastikas and such.

I think you're right about everything you've said, I think you're wrong to associate this with what the .mler said.

They would be perfectly fine with blanket censorship under communist rule.
