There's at least one in the hollow I frequent, but I swear they're the animal most aware of my presence. I've surprised fox, deer, and countless small game, but these fellas never let me close.

Beautiful. Fun fact I learned recently: woodpeckers' tongues are wrapped all the way to the back and top of the head, and some of their skull bones are spongey, to absorb all the impact from pecking wood. Nature is so dang cool.
