Yeah it was a bit over filled for the size of the empanadas, I don't generally deep fry things so I didn't really notice until I started putting them in, so I just took it slow and only ran 2 at a time
If there is a real Mexican restaurant (vs tex-mex or new mex-mex) or Hispanic grocery store near you, you might be able to find one. Dulce de Leche seems to be a popular flavor
Anything between two slices of bread is a sandwich. A slice of bread between two slices of bread is a sandwich. It's a bread sandwich. Fry bread is bread. So, yes, empanadas are sandwiches.
This is, at best, one oblong slice of bread folded in half and fused together at the edges before it technically became bread, so I don't think your definition applies here.

I forgot that there are savory empanadas, many that I run into are sweet with caramel or fruit filling.
The savory ones are basically meatpies, so I'd say empanadas are little pies.

Now I need to find a sweet one, I’ve only had spicy meat ones.

I say yes, in the same way that a folded over NY Slice of pie is a sandwich. Handheld bread containing yummies are sandwiches!

It's a calzone. Come on, this is basic cube rule stuff.

In Spanish the word for sandwich also starts with 'empa' so I think they must be

Empanada is "in bread". Em like entomb + pan.
Emparedado is "in walls". Em like envelope + pared.
Skullgrid@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 244d
depends on the region...
My first time in Montevideo had me cringing at going from "quiero este
empanadaemparedado" to "este sanguiche"ThrowawayPermanente@sh.itjust.works · 1 pts · 244d

Skullgrid@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 244d
FYI I had a brainfart, putting empanada instead of emparedado.

I got some frozen enpanadas recently and the directions for microwaving them specifically called them "sandwiches" 🤷♂️

Oh, well there we go, the food authorities have already labeled it for us! Lol
