Nah, instead the guy should never have to work again, if they don't want to. Need a MP sized lifelong pension. People need real rewards for extraordinary feats that serve the country.

He'll get an award for heroism, it shouldn't be Australian of the year.

Cross of Valour 100%

While well-intentioned, this is never going to happen. The last thing the Authorities want is civilians being incentivised to take the law into their own hands to win top awards. Ahmed was a very lucky man. It could have ended there and then for him. And he still ended up being shot.

Did you watch the video? He wasn't a vigilante, just a guy that took the gun of a terrorist preventing people from being killed. I don't like your comment at all. The guy is clearly a hero who puts others in front of himself.

dumb take on this.

tuff_wizard@aussie.zone · -1 pts · 248d (3 replies)

It might be dumb but its true. why do you think their advice during a home invasion is to just leave asap?

markko@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 248d (2 replies)

Very different situation. Home invaders are generally thieves. Home insurance will get you your stuff back. Life insurance won't give you your life back.

tuff_wizard@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 247d (1 reply)

Not really. Their messaging is always to prioritise personal safety.

It's great that old mate managed to get the gun and I salute him for his bravery but if that shooter had been a bit more aware or if he'd slipped or lost his grip then he may well have died of lead poisoning.

Vicpol or any organisation is never going to advocate for a member of the public to put themselves in danger. They won't tell him off but they certainly won't encourage it.

markko@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 246d

Yeah you're right about that from a safety perspective. The original comment was talking about civilians taking the law into their own hands though, and that's what my reply was focused on.

barnaclebutt@lemmy.world · -3 pts · 248d

I know. It's completely idiotic.

fizzle@quokk.au · 3 pts · 248d

These petitions have never achieved anything meaningful.

Is that you would have advised all the people on AA Flight 11, 77 and UA Flight 175 ?

Obviously the people on US Flight 94 would have not taken your advice.

Discussions of Affirmative Action and “Positive Discrimination” aside, Ahmad did what any Australian should do.

I’m sure that when he stands on the lawn of Parliament House in 6 weeks time, this is what he is going to say.
