I've heard it said that "white" isn't a proper race. It's just a skin color. So you could make the argument that snowmen are the only actual white people, and that your uncle is a beige person.

I’ve heard it said that “white” isn’t a proper race.

There aren't really "proper races" in the first place.

pimento64@sopuli.xyz · 18 pts · 244d (6 replies)

The only proper races are the 24 hours of le mans and the man tt, the rest are mental illnesses

AngryCommieKender@lemmy.world · 7 pts · 244d (4 replies)

Pikes peak speed climb should make the list. Always entertaining to watch someone roll their car down the mountain.

PlantJam@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 244d (3 replies)

I'd add the Barkley marathon to that list.

The Charles Barkley Shut Up and Jam Gaiden Marathon?

PlantJam@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 244d (1 reply)

This one: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barkley_Marathons

It's just a few more miles.

HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 244d

ooo, a double ultra. i'm not crazy enough for those, the only marathon i ever ran was in high school when i was doing tens and fifteens as daily workouts and i was extremely mad over a breakup so i just decided to run around the entire town, refilling my water bottle at gas stations as i went. It took half the day (i didn't time) and when i checked the map it was a little over 27. now my older brother, he runs ultras barefoot. he's a looney.

HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 244d

excuse me 5 miles is a proper race because i had my best mile time on it somehow and it totally wasn't a stopwatch malfunction

hperrin@lemmy.ca · 2 pts · 244d (4 replies)

It’s better than calling them “breeds”.

Almacca@aussie.zone · 6 pts · 244d (3 replies)

Actually, I'm on board with that, but only to mock racists breedists.

Almacca@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 244d (1 reply)

'Pure-breed' is just another term for inbreeding.

SeductiveTortoise@piefed.social · 3 pts · 244d

And their brains are likely purée bread. Not like they'd understand the joke though.

Duke_Nukem_1990@feddit.org · 16 pts · 244d (2 replies)

Well there are no races in the species of homo sapiens in the first place so yeah, white isn't a proper race :3

EtherWhack@lemmy.world · 8 pts · 244d (1 reply)

We're all just different breeds. And just like dogs and cats, keeping a heritage unnaturally pure tends to bring a host of bad health issues and vulnerabilities.

Doc_Crankenstein@slrpnk.net · 9 pts · 244d

Not even enough genetic diversity to constitute being called different "breeds". Cats, dogs, and other animals that are stratified by "breeds" have enough genetic diversity to call for stratification with clear distinctions between each breed. For us humans, there are a few genetic markers that were adapted to their regional environments but the adaptations have no clear genetic delineations between the different "races". There is a lot of overlapping after millennia of ancestral mixing.

You can tell a dog breed through genetic sequencing. You can't tell someone's race using it, though. We can tell our potential ancestry but there is way too much genetic overlap between the different "races" to tell the individual's race via their genome alone.

It's a lot more complex than this but I'm just speaking generally to get the point across.

This is something that has legit bothered me from a young age.

White people aren't white. I don't know the name for that weird color. Sand? Whatever it is, it's not white! And black people aren't black. They're clearly brown.

What idiot started calling us black and white when we're clearly brown and sand!

Yondoza@sh.itjust.works · 14 pts · 244d

OMG I'm a sand person! I can't wait to walk in single file to hide my numbers! Argh Argh Argh Argh!

Klear@quokk.au · 8 pts · 244d

People who want to see the world as black and white.

ekky@sopuli.xyz · 5 pts · 244d

In the Nordics most of us are "pig-pink". :D

BarbecueCowboy@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 4 pts · 244d (3 replies)

Some are real close, hard to tell someone with strong Irish ancestry that their skin isn't white. There's plenty from Africa on the opposite end where you'd be hard pressed to say their skin was brown. Just defined by the closest major color, I can't think of a better system.

Almacca@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 244d (1 reply)

Billy Connolly once described his skin colour as "pale blue" :)

BarbecueCowboy@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 3 pts · 244d

And, we've legitimately had that before. Can't forget the blue people of Kentucky.

LibertyLizard@slrpnk.net · 1 pts · 244d

Maybe not categorizing people on something as superficial as the color of their skin?

HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 244d

taupe

Kolanaki@pawb.social · 8 pts · 244d (2 replies)

Doesn't even make sense to call white people white. We're pink! The only thing dumber is seeing Asian people referred to as yellow. I've only ever seen two types of humans that are actually yellow: An animated cartoon family, and people with jaundice.

some_kind_of_guy@lemmy.world · 6 pts · 244d

Born pink, grow up and end up anywhere from.. still pink to olive, a little bit of sun and we become slightly tan, too much sun we become red, when sick or frightened we become almost white and we're grey when we die. Maybe it's white people who should have been referred to as "colored"!
