The top 10% of earners were responsible for a record 49.2% of total U.S. consumer spending in the second quarter of this year, according to Moody’s Analytics.
But economists warn that relying on a tiny slice of Americans to drive consumer spending could put the U.S. on shaky footing. Consumer spending makes up the lion’s share of the nation’s total economic activity.
“Whether the economy goes into a recession in 2026 hinges almost entirely on the top 20%,” said Navy Federal Credit Union’s Long. “If they do well, the overall economy does well. If they don’t, then we’re looking at a recession.”
In the meantime, she said, everyone else could face growing pressure.

Here in the UK, we usually end up with Aldis and Lidls very near to each other. It makes sense, since they occupy the same kind of 'big warehouse locations in customer shopping estates', although it would be nice to have them a bit more spread out.
That does mean you can get the best of both very easily - Lidl for bread and cooked meat, Aldi for smoked mackerel and potato salad - and have two different 'middle of Lidl' selections of random goods. Absolute result..
I legit like Clancy’s brand of chips or cookies over the major brands for some reason. Their take and bake pizzas are huge for the price! I know my wife tends to save on some meats and things when she shops at Aldi. I’m a fan as well.

In Spain Aldi has nice selection of fruits and vegetables, a lot of good quality traditional products (0 additives, organic and so on) and changing selection of imported and seasonal ones (like Christmas stuff, Asian food, South American food). I never saw it as the cheap box store option.
We finally got Aldis around here and I was so disappointed. It's Trader Joe's with slightly more stuff, and a stupid checkout/bagging process. I can't get many of my weekly necessities there, so no I'm not going grocery shopping twice a week to save a few bucks, same as TJ's. They didn't have chocolate milk when I was there. The hell?
I hit Aldi first, get whatever I can get, and then go to Publix, which is more expensive, but they have great selection, and they have a lot of BOGOs. Saves me a ton of money.

Their mayo is exactly the same as Hellman's, and about $2 cheaper, their peanut butter is better than ANY name brand, and is less than $4. Strawberry jam is exactly the same as Smuckers, at about $2. Their kettle-cooked potato chips are the best on the shelves, and a bag is less than $2. Many of their brands are made in the same factory as big brands. It is suspected that their premium spaghetti sauce is the same as Rao's.
And watch the Aisle of Shame for greeting cards ($1 for cards that would be $10 from Hallmark), reading glasses (3 for $5), or sunglasses ($5), or lots of nice cooking gear. I grab stuff all year for Christmas presents.

Thats how I felt first time. Every time I mentioned food affordability, not here but just in general, the overwhelming response has almost always been to go to Aldi, as if it was some wonderland of below market prices...
But it wasnt. At best its prices were the same as walmart.. and thats at best. Walmart was typically lower in most things I typically buy.
And yes, yes, I know.. Walmart is evil, I dont have the economic luxury to pay twice as much for my groceries elsewhere.

Actually, one of the things I love about their peanut butter is that it is slightly sweeter than the big brands, so yeah, that's valid.
Lots of other great deals, though. Their bread is every bit as good as Publix, at about a third the price.
And great French Bread Pizzas for about $3? I always keep about 3 of them in my freezer for a fast meal.
