We have a anarchist reading group starting up on signal for anyone that is interested. We'll choose a text to read, then meet weekly to discuss it. If you're interested leave a comment with your signal info or send me a message

What's wrong with the public one?

Not everyone in this group is on lemmy. And also we're planning on getting on a voice call to discuss the text

Nice try NSA.

I am not happy about the amount of fedjacketing in this thread. Instead of calling users cops (as a joke), try better and provide information why joining Signal groups from anonymous users might involve some risk.

What I found more suspect is that fact they use Signal to voice chat. Encrypted: Jami & Jitsi exist for this. Unencrypted: mumble, Jabber, and Discord.

If you already have the group in Signal, using its encrypted voice chat makes sense.

but op is asking us to register to theirs, without mentioning in the OP it's a voicechat discussion group. the op would be much different than what we are seeing being phished.

I'm interested. I'm already pretty active on Signal in anarchist adjacent groups.

Please reconsider. You can join a group like that without giving away your phone number to a person you don't know, asking for it online. See relevant comment in this comment section.

Is Signal invaded by mercan spies? Is this request just an attempt by the CIA, FBI and NSA to get anarchists to self identify?

I think Signal is still pretty ok. This is not a great argument in its favor, but I personally know several US contractors and govt employees that still use it for coordination, and they wouldn't use it if they thought it was compromised (even by the US govt). A backdoor for one group means a backdoor for everyone.

Maybe, but you need to give it your mobile phone number, which makes it easy to get your real identity and even track your location.
Smookey4444@anarchist.nexus · 3 pts · 224d
The reason it's on signal is because a lot of the people that use it aren't on lemmy at all. They come from mastodon and raddle and places like that. Also we usually discuss the texts over a voice call instead of just on a forum
punkisundead@slrpnk.net · 2 pts · 223d
FYI you can hide your phone number from other Signal users.
poVoq@slrpnk.net · 4 pts · 223d
Yes, but not from Signal (and thus the US government).
solo@slrpnk.net · 2 pts · 223d
To my understanding the backdoor was opened in 2021.

Did you read that article? It doesn't support your position that it's a backdoor or that it has the possibility of being a backdoor.
econhyde@slrpnk.net · 3 pts · 224d
Why signal? Seems sus to go offsite like such.
Smookey4444@anarchist.nexus · 3 pts · 224d
Because not everyone in the group is on this site. And also we're going to do a voice call to discuss it
ProdigalFrog@slrpnk.net · 3 pts · 224d
Movim could be a good alternative. It supports group chats and group voice/video calls, and uses XMPP on the backend.
Smookey4444@anarchist.nexus · 2 pts · 223d
Maybe, I'll look into it.
solo@slrpnk.net · 3 pts · 223d
I will repeat stuff that are already present in this conversation because I consider this super important.
With Signal one has to share their phone number. Please don't share your phone number with random people you meet online.
punkisundead@slrpnk.net · 7 pts · 223d
That is not entirely correct. It could happen that you share your phone number unintentionally and its good to make people aware of that possibility, but Signal allows you to join groups without revealing your phone number.

Thank you for the info!
Just a reminder that Signal is not 100% open source since 2021. This means that we can no longer verify if what they say about privacy, security, etc, is true.
