Im pretty sure at somepoint we're all going to get locked out of those battle. Net accounts for inactivity or the service being "sunset" and then they will fltry to force us to re-buy all of our games on a new platform. They will evergreen this strategy in perpetuity.

You can take my cartooned skin and prevent me from playing online, but you can't take my Brood War CDROM and stop me from hosting LAN parties.

Hell yeah!

If just I had CD drive on my laptop lol

ButteryMonkey@piefed.social · 5 pts · 216d

Can’t you just rip the ISO image on another pc and mount it virtually via usb? Idk if that still works but I used that strategy a lot when the optical drive on my gaming tower died.

GalacticSushi@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 3 pts · 216d

You can buy an external CD drive that connects via USB

wander1236@sh.itjust.works · 5 pts · 216d (1 reply)

You think you're gonna be able to buy the games huh?

randomaside@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 1 pts · 216d

Nope, just rent/lease over and over again.

Ioughttamow@fedia.io · 2 pts · 216d

Haven’t even played one since then. I guess I used it for the time I played destiny and those were linked… speaking of another game that just couldn’t realize its potential

Good thing we've got bnetd to save us!

...oh wait.

Diablo II was the last time I bought something by Blizzard. When they launched WoW I found it absurd that you had to buy the game and still pay a monthly fee to play.

regdog@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 216d (1 reply)

WoW was not only a game but also an online service. That was a big deal at that time.

PiraHxCx@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 3 pts · 216d

Yeah, I used to play Diablo II online and Ultima Online as well (other friends would play Tibia), all of these were created for online multiplayer as well, that's why I thought WoW was bullshit... nowadays I understand the difference in server costs (Diablo II they basically just hosted a lobby and your character data, the game instance would run on the player's computer and not their server, but the other two games hosted all their realms 24/7 with thousands of players simultaneously, the difference is that WoW were hundreds of thousands to millions).

Ioughttamow@fedia.io · 5 pts · 216d

I played wow for way too long. Got into it and my undiagnosed at the time ADHD just couldn’t handle it. At least I ended up burning out on it with enough time to not fail college 😜

I already bought my microwave, what is this so-called "electricity bill" I keep getting sent?

PiraHxCx@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 3 pts · 215d (2 replies)

Poor analogy, Blizzard didn't pay my internet bill, and all previous games you could play online just by buying the game. Diablo II had a single player but it was created for online multiplayer, and you didn't need to pay a monthly fee.

kandoh@reddthat.com · 2 pts · 215d (1 reply)

You're comparing a MMO against a lighter sessions based multiplayer.

There's a fundamental difference in the scale.

PiraHxCx@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 1 pts · 215d

Ultima Online and Tibia were MMOs with persistent worlds with thousands of players at the same time and no monthly fee as well :)
But I already addressed it here: https://lemmy.dbzer0.com/post/61742119/23805954

I re-upped my wow sub during burning crusade classic. Then they allowed servers to become massively imbalanced. On top of that, when they were announcing wotlk classic they didn't attempt to address that problem. I dropped it and joined a private server. It perfectly scratched that itch for me.

samus12345@sh.itjust.works · 2 pts · 216d

Let's see if I can remember all their games I've actually paid for...

Warcraft II and Beyond the Dark Portal

Warcraft III (I can't remember if I bought Frozen Throne or not, but I certainly played it)

Then a long stretch until Diablo III for PS3, Switch, and PS4

Diablo II Remake, PS5

Diablo IV and Vessel of Hatred, PS5

Everything else I either played someone else's copy or pirated it.

And that was in 2002 and 2003 respectively, before Activision's additional evil was even involved. I've been boycotting Blizzard for 24 years now.

Hadriscus@jlai.lu · 4 pts · 216d

I read the bit about Freecraft, forgive me I'm out of the loop and not into strategy games at all, I'm in for the political side of the story : Activision Blizzard sent a c&d, then the prpject changed name and structure and eventually released ? is it the extent of the event or is there more ? right now it doesn't seem too evil unless I'm misreading it

True. I don't remember what they did exactly, but I remember them being disliked well enough for good reasons, that I made a mental note not to buy their products; not that I ever played any Blizzard games, and I have not played Call of Duty since CoD: World at War.

TotallynotJessica@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 4 pts · 215d

Same. I don't need to remember why a company isn't worth buying from so long as I remember to not buy from them.
