There is an official answer to this question. It's Transformers; of course there is an official answer to this particular question. Actually, there are several. Jury's out on which of these interpretations in particular have caused the franchise to be Ruined Forever, but surely at least one of them has.
My first exposure to the transformers wiki was because of the web comic Shortpacked by David Willis. I went looking because I couldn't believe the fandom was as ridiculous as he portrayed.
I was so wrong, if anything he undersells it most of the time.
I think this is the wrong language to look for an answer. Japanese has a lot more mimetic words. I'm guessing anime has this pretty well established but I don't read it

As usual, this is thoroughly documented to a perhaps ridiculous degree on the Transformers Wiki:

The Transformers wiki is perfect.
Why the fuck did Hasbro release Transformers that don't transform, though?

As perfect as the Homestar Runner Wiki (possible RIP)?

Wonder if there’s a book/novelization, since that would be canon.
