If Bill Gates get involved in a scandal, is it now called a Billgate?

Context: Scandals are commonly appended by the suffix -gate, named after the Watergate Scandal

We really need to stop affixing -gate on to every conspiracy and scandal.

You can't just take it away - ya gotta come up with a good replacement that'll catch on even better so people will switch.

-slop seems to have already caught on

SanctimoniousApe@lemmings.world · 4 pts · 198d

Gates-slop. Sounds like a mess made in the bedroom.

Kacarott@aussie.zone · 13 pts · 198d

That's outrageous. What you are suggesting is gategate!

The problem isn't the -gate suffix, it's that we've had a once-in-a-decade scandal each month for the last 10 years.

Thing is, the most recent findings go back almost 15 or more...

If?????

expatriado@lemmy.world · 6 pts · 198d

i guess has to be one that stands out above the others, so could be referred as the gates' gate, or the gatest gate, or the mother of all gates

ik5pvx@lemmy.world · 7 pts · 198d

Gate^2

No. Blowing bubba is a billgate.

Battle_Masker@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 3 pts · 198d

Only if it happened at the Billgate hotel. Otherwise it's a 9/11

Flauschige_Lemmata@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 198d

It'd be the Gategate. It would only be called Billgate if Bill was a woman.

For you, the day a billionaire is involved in a scandal is a big thing. For me, it's a Wednesday.

Thing that’s starting to irk me is the bigger picture. To some degree we kinda present the “-gates” as the next thing in the media. Like as if you’re following a television series waiting for the next episode to drop. And that creates this feeling that it’s just a temporary thing that has no impact. Once it’s out of the news cycle it’s resolved and life goes on as usual.

I think we all know rationally speaking that with everything that’s going on, it’s quite the opposite. It’s not just Epstein/Trump/…-gate. It’s fucking “everything is connected and everything is fucked”-gate.
