I got my girlfriend partially because I drove a 91 Accord in almost mint shape, not in spite of. She realized I value and take care of things and don't just throw them away because I'm bored or "they're old, I want new". Green flag.

my 'new' car is four years newer than my older car

I've had my older car for like seven years now

the jump from ~2012 to whatever my next car is will either be an even bigger relative step backwards in age, or be huge because of how many years of vehicles are simply not an option due to shitty tech, touchscreens, bad UI design, and LED headlights

I'm trying to fix up my parents old 01 Toyota sequoia. Gonna use it as our family vacation vehicle. 14mpg, but seats 8 with trunk space and a hitch cargo thingy. Split the gas between 6 ppl and plenty of room for everyone.

Plus there's actually room to work on the vehicle and no proprietary computer stuff that needs to be done at the dealer.

How fuck is it possible? I ride not that old Kawasaki Vulcan S from 2014 and I just can't keep up with the repairs.

Alcoholicorn@mander.xyz · 1 pts · 183d (1 reply)

Other than brakes, tires, oil, maybe a chain+sprocket when they start to look sad, what kind of repairs?

Maybe start looking at used Hondas?

vivalapivo@lemmy.today · 2 pts · 183d

Water tank, head light, has to ask the mechanic to open the transmission box and check if it's ok -- all in the last 6 months.

Kawasaki is basically Honda.

Don't abuse it and do all your own work. I keep most of my stuff running by inspecting frequently and doing repairs before it's an "oh shit will this get me to work" kind of failure. Also motorbikes are a bit different than cars, they run way closer to their mechanical maxes and are just lighter overall. They typically break down quicker.

2004 was not the best looking years but a 1994 hatch? That is a classy ride.

rimu@piefed.co.za · 16 pts · 184d (1 reply)

My first 2 cars were 1990 Honda Civics!

88-2000 were the golden age of the Honda Civic

I miss my old 1992 Accord. Should have kept it instead of selling it when I got my 2012 Civic.

Even with the weird start issue, turns out it was probably just a bad clutch safety switch that somehow multiple mechanics missed... Had the exact same issue come up with the brand new Civic.

Raiderkev@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 184d

My '86 4Runner had a factory wiring issue. Turns out wiring in a solenoid from a 1978 bronco fixes it completely. It's jank, but I love it.

Oh yeah. A car shows your social status and you want to impress others. If you drive an expensive car, of course women will want to be your girlfriend.

I wonder what his father drives? Did he also give his mother cookies because he didn't have the correct car to impress?

I mean it IS true, but you don't want those women anyway.

Drive a shitbox and the women who still like you will have much better personalities.

Not sure what the equivalent is when you reverse the genders. Put as little effort into your appearance as possible for the first date? Idk. I think superficial men judge women by their appearance more than their wealth.

But I also think the mom in this exchange was joking

yopyop@sh.itjust.works · 2 pts · 184d

Or maybe mama likes to joke once in a while.

aeronmelon@lemmy.world · 7 pts · 184d

Moms just like to slide those burns into conversation.

A 2004 Honda civic? In this economy? Shit that's a roof and reliable transpo dudes a catch

Frostbeard@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 183d (2 replies)

A civic after the 2011 redesign is a decent car. At least with the 2.2L engine

TonyTonyChopper@mander.xyz · 2 pts · 183d (1 reply)

chat I drive a 1.5L, am I cooked

Frostbeard@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 183d

Thats a turbo right? Tbf I didn't know Honda had turbo engines on their civics.

I had a 2008 (Hatchback) 1.8L VTEC and loved it. (2.2L was never imported to Norway by the importer because of high pollution tax) Stiff suspension, sort of bucket seats and low profile tires.

You in the US? Is the 1.5L turbo the same as in EU?
