As for the kid, maybe their parents will look around at the house full of cat toys and head off to the shelter, and some deserving kitty will find a forever home. Maybe even a bonded pair of kitties.
One of my cats vanished on New Year's Eve one year, because my idiot friend who came to pick me up left the door open for ten minutes when he showed up. I was distraught and spent New Year's Day driving around the neighborhood and calling for her. Turned out she was just hiding under the house and she came running back in that night and never went near the door ever again.
I had a spayed cat that used to run away from May to October. He did it for five years or so, until our other cat went missing (probably eaten by a fox..). He always came back well-fed, but with a lot of scrapes and shit, and we strongly suspect he spent the summers fighting with (non-existant) bears over the territory.. One year our neighbours called and asked us to get him, since he had stopped at their horse farm for a few days on his way home and beat their stable cats and ate their food... He also just sat and stared down a charging border collie once! The sucker some how lived 'til 19!

Somewhere there's a kid crying because the sweet orange cat who walked into their life 5 months ago has disappeared.

Same, one of our cats went missing one Sunday night, showed up the following Thursday…that was bad enough.
Funny/sweet bit though…the other cats gathered by the front door, which prompted my partner to open it, and there he was.

He just went on sabbatical. Had to take a break from all that napping.

My cat disappeared for several weeks one time and came back well-fed with somebody else’s collar on him.

I've had both cats and collies as pets, the cat winning that engagement doesn't surprise me one bit.

I don't know where our cat went during the summer months, but he always came back with battle scars, so I guess it must have been something like this.
