So they helped end democratic rule and put a despot in place that was corrupt in their favor. The son of whom they are trying to get back into power now

This all could've been helped by letting the democracy be and paying a fair share for the oil extracted from the country, but that was somehow a bridge too far.

He died a martyr to his supporters, which now have an unquestionable Casus belli and a license to prosecute and murder any current dissenters for treason.
