Mine:
- Learn a second language and keep up with the language your parents speak. You will regret being a brat about not wanting to speak this language especially as your family members pass.
- The only opinions about you that really matter are from the people you respect and who respect you back
- Being a kind humble person, who leads their political convictions with curiosity and not self righteousness is important. As that one person said: "I am no hero and neither are you."
- Don't throw out your old media (mix cds, tapes, records, photos, zinee, etc) because you think they're embarrassing. They either will not be embarrassing later or they will become expensive and you can tell them for mad bucks.

TEETH

This. So much this. The dental industry is a racket, costs way more than it has any right to, and it been separate from health insurance is a joke.
But, if your teeth are bad enough, they can kill you. So take care of them.
I'm struggling with my teeth every day.
scytale@piefed.zip · 14 pts · 168d
Take care of your teeth. Floss daily.
Strengthen your core. Lower back pain in your 30’s is a bitch.
If you believe the current financial system will still exist in the next 30 years, start investing early. A little amount here and there builds up if you start early.

Don't work too hard, don't worry about finding a job you love to do, love your life, be able do your work without it affecting you very much.
Don't listen to any politician, they are all liars, even the one you think is different.
Meet your neighbors, join a local group of any kind, find community in real life and proximal to you, not just online.
Don't listen to internet influences, they're all out to harm you.
Do crazy shit in your 20's. It's harder to do crazy shit when you're older.

Move around, date around, try new, weird things. Don't settle down yet. You can do that in your 30's, it'll be fine.
Enjoy the nightlife, it'll be harder to stay awake for it later, (though don't fool yourself into thinking fun and nightlife ends when you're 30)
Try different jobs, industries. Travel.

It's okay to acknowledge that some advice given to you by older folks of Lemmy is questionable and of limited value!

But then what if this the questionable advice? Now I'm stuck in a loop!

Please stay in shape.
You don't need to be a body builder, having a bit of a belly is fine, just make sure to stay somewhat active.
I am trying to get rid of 20 or so kilos, and at 38 it sure as fuck ain't easy.
It would have been way better to simply not accumulate that weight in the first place.

Sunscreen has chemicals, so I only use it when swimming or at the beach.
I usually have thin long sleeves and a hat to protect from the sun.

Dont listen to the advice of unsuccessful people. Sure, keep it as a cautionary tale in the back of the your mind what not to do. But concentrate on the the suggestions of people who had success.
But success isnt only meassured in material form or status. Understanding what makes YOU happy is way more important. Money and status obviosly will help with that to some extent. But its important to not loose focus by chasing imaginary dragons.

It's absolutely fine to realize that something - that you previously thought you wanted to achieve - is not for you, and decide to give up on it; but you should try to make sure that you have had at least one experience in life where achieving something (or learning it, etc) turned out to be much more difficult than you thought, but you kept persevering until you overcame the challenge.
Maybe this is not actually great advice, but (speaking for myself) it has greatly increased my confidence in my abilities and potential, as well as my general self-belief.

Let me tell you about some fun I've had twice now:
Some of a tooth snaps off. You go to the dentist, "Yep, that needs to come out." You schedule an appointment with a dental surgeon. On that day, what's left of the tooth is torn out of your face, and a titanium drywall anchor dusted with cadaver bone is forced into the hole. You spend a couple months with a titanium cap sticking out of where your tooth used to be. Once it's healed enough, you go back to the dentist and the titanium cap comes out and they bolt a fake tooth to the implanted anchor, which hurts a part of your body that has never felt sensation before so it feels like it's 3 feet behind your head. And now one of your teeth is ceramic, weirdly numb, and food can get stuck under it.
Others in here have said "brush your teeth" but one of mine broke because resorption. The tooth hollowed itself out from the inside, for no apparent reason. So, don't randomly lose the tooth lottery either.

Younger like age? Or younger like newer to the platform?
For the latter, it's "this isn't Instagram, be yourself and don't worry about what others think. Also, hide vote weights and sort by new (at least in comments). Don't let others sway your opinion of a post or comment. Make up your own mind. Lemmy doesn't have a Karma system. Be conservative with your downvotes, but don't be afraid to use them if someone is rude or off-topic. Be generous with upvotes, but also be willing to block on a moment's notice — browse /all in the feed, see all the wacky new communities, and block the ones you have no interest in.
For age? Don't stress what you don't need to. I'm not religious, but you can use the serenity prayer (grant me the courage to accept what I can't change and the wisdom to know the difference... there's another part but you get the idea). Leave for work/school/appointments early and let the crazy people cut you off. Give them space. Remember that the morgue is full of people who had the right of way. Show respect and treat people decently until they show you otherwise. Don't be afraid to love, your friends, a lover, a few lovers along the way, your family, let them all know you care. And work stops at the door. If you see your boss outside of work, they're just another person. Don't disrespect them, but also don't kiss their ass. You might have to do that at work, but smile and use their first name. If they say something, remind them that we are not our jobs, we are individuals first. (Or maybe don't see people outside of work you aren't friendly with, since you do have to work with them. Know when to call situations like that.)

I tried to write a post a couple times and the themes that keep coming up are "get good at money" and "practice delayed gratification"
It's easy to spend money you don't have on credit cards, and then have a horrible time later trying to pay them all off plus the 30% interest. Don't do that. Don't just buy stuff because it's there and easy.
Make a budget. You don't need to be fancy but you need to be honest. Add up your net income. Add up your expenses. Go actually look at your bank statement and see what you're spending, not just what you remember.
Join your local library. Read books. They probably have other media to borrow, too.
Join meetups and other local groups. Meet people. Humans are social creatures.

How do you know that? There wasn't any context given.
The alt right aren't the only ones who use that terminology. You can get redpilled on all sorts of stuff. All it means is that you've woken up to the reality outside the mainstream, whatever you think that is. Walking outside of Plato's cave and all that jazz. In the last few years I've been getting redpilled on socialism, for example.
In my opinion, the alt right didn't just take the blue pill: they chugged the whole damn bottle.
TheAlbatross@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 5 pts · 167d
I haven't heard anyone use "being redpilled" in any context that wasn't related to alt-right, racist or misogynistic ideologies and so I would be wary of anyone using that phrase in a positive context.
zarkanian@sh.itjust.works · -3 pts · 167d
Do you even know what that reference is from? The alt right didn't invent it.
TheAlbatross@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 2 pts · 167d
Yeah I know what it references, but I've just never seen anyone talk about "getting redpilled" on anything good and I think if anyone tried to, I'd distrust them and avoid them.

That's solid, 2. is like the prosperity gospel of social rules though. People be pretty sadistic and it can affect your life in some petty messed up ways. Not really a lot that the "In my own lane" grindset can do to protect you.
