The mayor was inside the residence at the time, the police department said later Saturday
The NYPD’s Bomb Squad confirmed that the devices thrown in the direction of New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s home were both viable IEDs.
The incident is now under investigation by both the NYPD and the FBI. In total, two devices were thrown during the protests on Saturday afternoon on Manhattan’s swanky Upper East Side.
On Sunday, police spokesperson Jessica Tisch said that the “preliminary analysis of a device that was ignited and deployed at a protest yesterday has determined that it is not a hoax device or a smoke bomb.”
“It is, in fact, an improvised explosive device that could have caused serious injury or death,” Tisch added.

We have a domestic terrorist problem, and it is exactly who it has been since the Oklahoma City bombing.
BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today · 76 pts · 189d
I remember when OK City happened, and EVERYBODY immediately started blaming the Muslims, but it didn't sit right with me. Why Oklahoma? Most Muslims have never heard of Oklahoma. It seemed like a target of opportunity, rather than a target designed to have the most propaganda effect.
And then they caught them a few days later, and sure enough, they were homegrown, right-wing whack-jobs.

Was Uncle Ted right winged? I thought he was anti fascist.

Timothy McVeigh did the OK city bombing, and he was a registered republican.
electric_nan@lemmy.ml · 21 pts · 189d
Uh, he also was obsessed with "The Turner Diaries", which is a neonazi novel.

They already said Republican

If that one was OK, I'd hate to see a really bad city bombing.

Can't tell if joke or doesn't know OK stands for Oklahoma in state abbreviations.

Yeah, my bad. I looked it up immediately after posting this comment and found my folly. Thought I deleted the comment, but since it has replies I'm going to leave it as is, as to not confuse anyone coming across this in the future.

You can edit the other post and "fix" the text with a note.
YiddishMcSquidish@lemmy.today · 3 pts · 189d
Would you prefer me to do that?
bufalo1973@piefed.social · 4 pts · 189d
It was just a note in case you didn't think about it.
YiddishMcSquidish@lemmy.today · 8 pts · 189d
No, I thought about it. Then I remembered the "deleted by creator" comments I've come across in the past. I just want honesty. Which not editing my comment kinda cements.

His voter registration really doesn't answer the question
FoxyFerengi@startrek.website · 22 pts · 189d
He asked if the guy was right-winged. Yes, he was.
He was also anti-goverment following the killings in the siege at Waco, which is why he bombed that federal building.

Of course not, he's gotta be trans or something right

Timothy McVeigh made one big mistake, he was 20 years too early essentially that he wasn't mainstream Republican yet.
rozodru@piefed.world · 81 pts · 189d
click bait headline and post.
It was an Fascist Protest held by Nazi Jake Lang against Muslims. two counter protesters were the ones who tossed the IEDs. they WERE NOT directed at the Mayors home but at the Nazi's that were protesting nearby.
hitmyspot@aussie.zone · 18 pts · 189d
Terrorism with IEDs is a threat to safety of all and to democracy, even if it is directed at nazis.
Also, what do you think the Nazis do next?
BeardededSquidward@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 33 pts · 189d
Oh no, the Nazis will get violent! Oh wait, they already are? And have the state supporting and performing their violence? Oh....
hitmyspot@aussie.zone · -6 pts · 189d
You're conflating state sponsored violence with random Nazi supporters joking them as private malitia.
Absolutely violence should not be avoided where violence is already being used. However, by all account these nazis were protestors, not the agents of the government.
Nazis are still people and there is still a spectrum of violence and beliefs. In the Nazi bar analogy, they all end up being nazis by virtue of association and tolerance of Nazi views. You're making the leap to all being Nazis immediately.
Non violent far right protestors have the right to protest and their beliefs. Where they have already perpetrated violence, they should receive it in kind or, ideally prosecution.
The use of IED is not that and just normalises it's use. Which side has the bigger propensity for violence and bombing of unarmed civilians?
The Dems and the left have a problem where they tut tut and pearl clutch rather than taking action. Jumping to bombing protests is not the answer, however distasteful those protests are.
BeardededSquidward@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 18 pts · 189d
I'm sorry, with dealing with Nazis under a Nazi regime, I fail to see a difference between them being of the state or not.
hitmyspot@aussie.zone · -15 pts · 189d
That's my point. When you lose your humanity, you are no better. The whole point of fascism is to 'other' different in and out groups. Exactly what you're doing, to the point where you think terrorism is ok.
Deceptichum@quokk.au · 12 pts · 189d
hitmyspot@aussie.zone · -9 pts · 189d
Firstly I'm not a centrist. My beliefs lie firmly on the left.
Secondly, you're not addressing my points.
It's easy to be edgy and support terrorism from behind a keyboard. The reality of living under terrorism threats from either side is no better than fascism. See northern Ireland, Palestine, Chechnya, Afghanistan, Nigeria. The only one I'd like to live in is northern Ireland, where the threat of terrorism has subsided due to treating each side as people and ending terrorism.
The only way nazism grows is by treating people like they are not people. This is why nazis take over.
BeardededSquidward@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 10 pts · 189d
Alright, let me say this then. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charlottesville_car_attack
They're ALREADY violent before anything was done to them. You can't handle them with kid gloves. And not seeing a difference between them being of the government and not isn't dehumanization. It's acknowledging that the government will protect the when they do awful stuff because the government wants it done.
Now dehumanizing would be saying they're cockroaches, that they're not people, by what THEY say of US and all out groups. I have not said that. But if you believe the moral high road is how you'll win, you've not been paying attention for the past 30 years.
Edit: As well you cannot tolerate their hate or views at all as well. We've let bygones be bygones for too long and well, here we are. And nothing but violence on a large scale will ultimately solve this because if we defeat them in the elections, they will get even MORE violent.
lightnsfw@reddthat.com · 9 pts · 188d
Except the "other" in this case are fucking Nazis. Fuck off with this tolerance bullshit. Their views are violent by their nature.
HasturInYellow@lemmy.world · 6 pts · 188d
When the othering is due to the choices that people make, it is fundamentally different, both morally and as a question of politics, that othering people due to things outside their control.
If they want to stop being Nazis, they magically get their humanity back. And not a moment sooner.
They are not worthy of mercy or kindness because they give none to others.
HermitBee@feddit.uk · 1 pts · 188d
What defines them being Nazis? Genuine question - what are the specific attributes that make someone lacking in humanity and therefore deserving of violence? Is death ever justified? What are the extra attributes that make someone worthy of death rather than just violence?
bold_atlas@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 188d
This pacifist bullshit ain't selling anymore.

So the article says the explosives were thrown by counter protesters. I don't support the Nazis but idk if this fits the narrative here

Oh, so that’s why the news is allowed to talk about this.
plateee@piefed.social · 75 pts · 189d
Remember when liberals were so pissed off at Mayor Adams that they threw a pipe bomb at his house? No?
Huh. Weird.
Dearth@lemmy.world · 18 pts · 188d
Video seems to indicate that the IEDs were thrown at the nazis who were grilling a pig head in front of the mayor's house.
Why the NYPD was allowing a bbq on the sidewalk isn't clear to me yet
ReasonablePea@sh.itjust.works · 18 pts · 189d
So not that I contest your point but the article says the bombs were thrown by counter protesters. Not the anti Islam protesters

What's funny to me is that they're like, 20 people protesting? And there seems to be nearly as many officers protecting them, really a "some of those that work forces, are the same that burn crosses" moment

I'm assuming this was an antifa BLM drag queen working for ACORN and very worked up by all the terrible, hateful rhetoric about the Republicans?
SinAdjetivos@lemmy.world · 46 pts · 189d
Lol, if you actually read the article it legitimately was the counter-protestors attempting to bomb the white nationalists protesting against "Islam" outside Mamdani's residence.
The spin here that Mamdani was the target, or in active danger from the "explosives", is incredible!
The actual target was Jake Lang and the police protecting him and was an attack against NYPD who is actively enabling and supporting said intimidating campaign against Mamdani and does pose an actual risk to his, and his families, health and safety.
