I like Haiku, i've installed it a couple times. An incredibly easy and insanely quick install. If you're looking for a simple OS to browse the internet and do some light dev work and need it to run on old hardware you honeslty can't go wrong with it. Out of all the none linux OS' I was honestly surprised it had Floorp, don't even have that on any of the BSDs.
ok hear me out: If a user is going to build and compile their own kernel to simply put in a couple cheats for a specific game then...hey let them cheat. I HIGHLY doubt your average cheater is going to go through all that to cheat in like arc raiders or something.
I just don't see hundreds or even thousands of players doing this. Not enough anyways to ruin the online experience for others.
could it look close? eh maybe. the visual customization of it is still kinda limited. like if you're looking to have the same customization levels of say Plasmashell you're out of luck. If you're ok with the "pill" look then it's fine but beyond that you couldn't make it look like say DWM's bar or what have you. But I suppose if you wanted it to look like cosmic or maybe gnome it'd be more doable since they all kinda share the same principal of "pills are a great look"
As far as if it'll play nice with GNOME? no clue. I've used it with Kwin in the past as a replacement for Plasmashell and it worked fairly well.
you don't use Noctalia alongside plasmashell, it just works alongside Kwin so I'm assuming that's what OP meant. Noctalia just replaces your plasmashell.
I do volunteer work in Toronto and within the past couple years that absolute massive increase in homeless seniors, middle-aged women, etc is staggering. Never before have I seen so many women in their 50s and older being homeless. never. So many older men also. And the problem is the system can't cater to them because it's never had to before. And these people are so damn exposed.
I said years ago that the homeless population was going to change and we're seeing it now. The days of everyone saying "oh it's just drug addicts and mentally ill people who are homeless" are long gone. I see it every week in food lines and clothing hand outs. the vast majority now are seniors, middle-aged people who lost their jobs, mentally fit individuals that are financially screwed. and the terrifying thing is people forget that drug use and mental illness are a symptom of homelessness. I'm seeing men in their 70s turning to drug use to cope. NEVER have I seen that before.

even if you were/are in Tech you'd be lucky to A. still have a job at this point and B. be paid well for it. I've been in the industry for 20+ years now and the wages just totally stagnated. I went from having more money than I knew what to do with in my 20s to having just enough to ALMOST live comfortably on my own. And I'm kicking myself that I didn't settle down in my 20s, buy a house then, marry the girl I was seeing then, starting a family then. Like I said I had more money than I could imagine and figured "it's going to get better from here" and it didn't. I blew it. wasted it all on devices and pcs i don't have anymore, videogames, booze, drugs, clothes, etc. Just totally blew it.
I see fresh grads today who are damn lucky to even get a job in this field but they're being paid peanuts and living in a shoebox apartment or with like 5+ roommates or still living at home with their folks.

First and foremost the addicts and the mentally ill are the last groups that are going to seek out assistance. Food lines for example are generally going to be vacant of both those groups. but said lines are still massive.
Next you have the fact that the vast majority of the mentally ill don't even know they're homeless. This is another thing that is rarely if ever acknowledged. You can try to talk to these people and in most cases they say they have a home, that they're housed, and they're just "out and about" right now. With the addicts it's just fix to fix. that's all they are concerned about. Neither group will ask for help because as previously stated A. they believe they're not homeless or B. they're just looking for the next fix. When approached and actually offered help they will generally accept it, it's just that no one has reached out and told them where to go for said help.
There's also that misconception that they will refuse to live by the rules imposed on them. this is make belief and I've never come across any place that has "rules" preventing someone from doing something. It's also a false narrative that shelters bar drug use. this isn't true at all. Shelters will provide safe consumption areas for users and try to provide said user with help.
In most cases the homeless population, currently, consists of the elderly, women escaping domestic abuse, middle age single women who have lost their primary source of income, LGBTQ+ youth, the physically disabled, or simply people who lost their jobs. the most shocking uptick are middle age women. it's REALLY bad for that right now. So can homelessness be solved for these people listed? 100% and doing so you'd see a massive reduction of people sleeping outside in your average city. A homes first initiative with needs based assistance can work. in 2013 a study in Toronto was shown that the city spends on average 75K a year PER homeless individual. this included shelter costs, medical, and other resources. that's 75K per person in YOUR tax dollars that went towards not solving anything. Providing housing + assistance would be massively cheaper in the long run.
The primary barrier to solving this aren't the people sleeping rough. It's the people with roofs over their heads who simply don't want to pay for it and feel these people are getting handouts. that's it.
I just use Floorp with my linux and windows installs. on OpenBSD my options are a bit more limited so I need to either try to compile Floorp for it or find something else (if there even is anything else)
Hell Floorp is even on Haiku. It's a rock solid firefox fork made by a Japanese dev team that doesn't release/update until things are absolutely rock solid. I can't even recall the last time floorp broke, if it ever has. good browser, always my go to FF fork.

For backups I would highly suggest you look into Borg backups. There are free services that work with Borg as long as your backups are under 10GB. I've used borgbase.com in the past and that always worked well. With Borg you can automatically schedule your backups to not only upload them online but also to remind you to plug in like an external usb drive and backup. all backups are encrypted so really secure, fantastic tool I highly recommend.
