Remember the European discourse during the Greenland tantrum - they were trying to leverage peace, sovereignty through saying ...but, but allies. My assumption is that the current tantrum is a response to that, conscious or not

It's a bad case of news title wording which is a holdover from newspaper days. There's little reason to economize on letters now and people could be writing proper grammatical sentences instead, but they don't.

Most ships are.not "flagged" in the US, small obscure countries make money his way.
Most ships are not heading to the US but eventually the energy will generate trade which will head to the US.
US economy benefits a lot by having the US dollar as the world currency. "Petrodollar". By crashing the global economy with oil and an Idiot to blame for causing the mess, Iran can destabilize that whole economic balance.

Right now it is in the interest of other NATO countries to see the US weakened militarily and politically. The US stopped being an ally as soon as Trump threatened to annex Canada and Greenland.
