Solved thanks to @etherphon! Tears of a Clown by Smokey Robinson
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gMEz0lB6hBI
I tried a browser search but results were all over the place. It's a pretty common tune and I was curious about its background.
EDIT: I should have put middle school orchestra in the title, sorry about that.

I forgot to mention orchestra, oof! I think it's an instrumental but not certain. All my brain will spit out is the intro/chorus and verse tunes.
Here's a lame attempt at the melody:
Doo, ^doo^, ^^doo^^, (rest), da-da-^dat^ dat dat

You better whistle or hum the melody into Vocaroo, because otherwise this is woefully little info to go off. There was a lot of orchestral pop music in the sixties.
