There's a commercial for Rocket Mortgage that runs during NBA games. It shows some schlub walking into his house with three bags of groceries while a voiceover says "those three bags of groceries used to be six bags". Then the house starts talking and reminding him that he can take a second mortgage on his equity and use the money to buy groceries. The schlub becomes ecstatic and dances into the house. It's astonishing that RM is able to convince people that taking on debt to pay for basic necessities is a great thing.
Or, hear me out: sell your services as a samurai bodyguard, gain the trust of a high-profile billionaire, and then let his rivals bribe you into turning a blind eye for his assassination!
I went grocery shopping last week. Which means I have to wait another week (for next payday) before I'll be able to pay my rent.
The hardest part is that every time I go to the grocery store, I tell myself, "Okay, just the bare basics. No treats. I have to keep this under $XX amount."
But every time, despite trying to be very careful and only getting the staples for meals, I end up exceeding that amount and have to put things back to stay under.

I'm afraid to ask, how much should I have in retirement?
AnUnusualRelic@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 156d
At least five, maybe six.

Depends on your age, income, desires when you retire, etc

Curious what your income and diet looks like. Should be easy to survive off beans and rice, no?
