So, on Reddit (not a good place, I know), the most upvoted comment to a post saying "You get a call from a woman and it makes you angry. Who is she?" was "Ellen 'Degenerate'". (Their words, not mine). Since it was hugely upvoted, why is she so bad? All I know is that she is a talk show host and a lesbian.

A couple things I know of related to her talk show: 1) She kind of 'showed her true colors' by being snarky and mean-spirited ("haha, it's all just fun") towards many a guest, even making some cry or weirdly putting them on the spot when talking about a traumatic thing in their lives; 2) She was seemingly revealed to be a toxic a-hole behind the scenes to her staff and others. This is evidently not unique at all among talk show hosts, but paired with #1, it kind of sunk her reputation, it seemed to me.

I figured the search would reveal a ton of trashy celebrity rag stories, and it would take some time to see whether more reliable news stories would support any such contentions. Since the original commenter believed the allegations, perhaps that person already had some strong sources in mind.
The ridiculous part of this is that Ellen would have fled to Europe to avoid prosecution or connection to sex trafficking by P. Diddy. I am already aware of the "treated staff poorly" allegations, and they are all over this thread.
Going and researching other people's ridiculous claims is often a waste of time. Do I need to research whether NASA actually went to the moon or if there is an ice wall at Antarctica that holds the oceans in?
I just wasted 5 minutes looking at the allegations about Ellen fleeing to Europe, and it looks like they may have been started by Elon Musk. Should I also investigate whether a diver helping rescue a trapped soccer team in Thailand is a pedophile or Barrack Obama's birth certificate?

She often overstepped the guests' boundaries. For exampled she pressured Mariah Carey into drinking alcohol as a toast to "not being pregnant" in order to force her to admit she was pregnant. Carey later said she didn't want to discuss her pregnancy due to a history of miscarriages. She also got really aggressive towards a guest for not having been invited to her birthday party. That's just her on-camera behavior. There are numerous stories of her being an asshole to basically everyone behind the scenes.

She’s been outed as not being the nice person she appears to be on TV. There was a big controversy a few years ago that some of her crew had a lot of stories about her behaviors behind the camera that show that she wasn’t such a nice person to the people who helped make her show a reality.
I don’t remember specifics, but it’s not hard to find if you go looking for videos or articles on it. From what I remember, it was the typical diva sort of behaviors like don’t look her in the eye and being rude to others. Nothing too too serious like sexual assault but still not nice stuff and people view her as a phony since.
There were also some things she did to guests like when she “forced” Mariah Carey to reveal she was pregnant by offering her alcohol and Mariah basically had to admit she was pregnant as to why she wouldn’t drink alcohol. Kind of a shitty thing to do to someone.

Lol, but maybe she just didn't want to lie. Simpler. You're right - i bet at that time the idea of "just not drinking" would be ridiculed by the press and general public - but it's for that reason that Carey might fear she'd get caught up in a bigger lie trying a different excuse.

how would she get caught in a bigger lie? it is her fucking business when she does or does not want to drink alcohol. and even if she drank alcohol some other time, does not mean she must be in mood for it every waking moment. i know, hindsight is 20/20, but the point is that people need to normalize not getting drunk and not having to explain to anyone why they don't want to.

I think the implication is that the other big reason for not drinking that people would jump to is substance abuse. Even if untrue, once the rumor starts it would be out there.

I'd go as far to say that back then people would still have the old fashioned idea that all celebrities are "masterful drinkers" who are allowed one or two glasses of champagne in the middle of the day with ellen degeneres.
As such, they have narrow-minded views towards sobriety.

I saw a short about margeret cho , she said while working with her, degeneres was being a bitch to her(in chos in words), she did not acknowledge cho's existence in her later years. you may think cho was embellishing, but with the other evidence came out against ellen, im keen to say she might be right.
DEGENERES conveniently fled to UK/EU around the time DIDDY was convicted/setenced, so that adds another layer of suspicion. almost immediately after diddies conviction.
Also family guy made a parody how horrible she is, taken from real events that happened behind the scenes.

Depends on who you ask. The sorts of people who call her that are bigoted rightwingers, most famously Jerry Falwell. This animosity dates back to the 90s when she had a sitcom. She came out and the right wing lost its shit about it, and there's still hate for her today. No surprise it got upvotes on reddit.
Independently of that, she's evidently just plain mean to anyone she can get away with mistreating.
