Today is 1 year off suboxone, and a few weeks ago, marked 11 years sober.

There's a couple of things I wanted to say to both get them off my chest, and maybe offer a window into what life is like with a past like mine.

tldr: It's been fascinating feeling things properly for the first time as an adult.

Sorry for the novella.

::: spoiler spoiler

So, suboxone is marketed as something that can supress cravings. The part they don't tell you, is that it numbs your emotions significantly.

So for 10 years, I thought that how I felt was normal. But as soon as I stopped taking suboxone, I realised what had been going on. It's sneaky in a way. It happens so gradually so you don't notice the slow erosion of the highs and lows of life.

The first 3 months were incredible. Making music felt unreal. Really anything to do with music was unreal. Waves and waves of the happy head tingles (I don't know the proper term). Everything felt amazing, because you know, I could actually feel things again. Socialising, gym, pretty much everything positive was amplified by 10.

But that wasn't going to last forever because the highs have to come with lows.

All the things I'd been ignoring, all the things I thought I was ok with hit real hard.

Imagine a decade of life experiences condensed into the space of say, 6 months.

It's overwhelming.

I realised that I'd effectively isolated myself from the world, thinking that it was fine and it didn't bother me because I was content in my little numb bubble. Then came the regrets of the wasted time. Not just about my old life, but the 10 years of the half life I'd been living that were in the rearview mirror.

In the last 12 months, I've had a couple of significant health scares, work issues, problems with maintaining friendships etc.

No cravings even at my lowest. And I know for a fact that if certain things had happened back in my old life, I would have snapped and gone on an insane bender.

I'm glad I stopped taking the stuff, don't get me wrong, I just wish the doctor that was prescribing it had been a lot more upfront about the impact it would have long term.

But like I said yesterday, the stats for people who stop taking it are fucking grim, so I'm guessing the medical literature indicates that it's better that people never stop taking it.

I think the reason I've succeeded at this whole thing in general, is that I don't have a safety net, so I have to be my own. In the back of my mind at all times, I know that if I fail, there's no rescue.

hugs

also, not failure, not wasted time, maybe you were learning the skills to cope with all the highs and lows and getting yourself in a better environment

hugs again , you did great ๐Ÿฅน

also hugs to Gibson, who has been a terrific support ๐Ÿ˜ธ

Thank you :) I guess in the end it did help me build a better life, so it's not all a loss. And yes, Ms Gibson has been crucial for this entire adventure!

SituationCake@aussie.zone · 6 pts · 127d (2 replies)

Youโ€™re doing amazing. Sounds like the suboxone was the right choice at the time, things could have kept spiralling had you not made that choice. Be proud that you looked after yourself, no regrets. The medication has now done its job, youโ€™ve moved forward, congrats on the one year! Itโ€™s a huge achievement especially in the context of those stats. Wow. Well done.

I feel honoured that you are willing to share a situation so personal with us. It's fucking admirable, and I am in considerable awe. Remember, we are here for you if things wobble a bit going forward. Safe space to vent and all that.

So apparently I did actually smash my interview yesterday, today I got a request for my reference - which is just a formality I'm quite sure as it's an internal move. I just need to wait for my manager to get back from leave which isn't for another week and a bit. My colleague who interviewed for the same role a week before me hasn't had a request for her reference so I'm pretty sure I got it! (Sorry colleague)

Tonight is a tomato soup with chunks of brie floating in it, and lots and lots of toast soldiers. Bugger nutrition, I need COMFORT!

Seagoon_@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 127d (1 reply)

That sounds amazingly delicious

TheWitchofThornbury2@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 127d

One of my fab faves. The brie goes gooey in the hot soup and the spicy smooooothness of the tomato soup is just perfeck with it. Dab the toast soldier in the melty cheeee and swoosh it through the soup and then GOBBLE! Messy but so so yum. This is what home grown tomatoes were invented for. And brie I reckon.

No mouse in the trap but worked out a few things. It's not peanut butter but bread. left a trail of it going up the ramp and it got to the end, only 2 bits shy (like 4cm shy) of the spinny bottle of DOOM.

So I know 3 things.

-it will go up the ramp

-bread

-I know where it lives.. in the fireplace... (I'm not doing that).

Heading back to melbs today so will leave it set.

::: spoiler spoiler Iโ€™ve made the choice to give up the black cat to ensure that he has someone reliable to care for him. He deserves every bit of the same love and effort Melbcat got but itโ€™s such a big commitment to foster or adopt right now and I donโ€™t have it left in my tank.

It breaks my heart. I was picking out names for him, trying to think how Iโ€™d make it through the long repetitive work of ringworm treatment and planning to buy him a funny mushroom themed scratcher to celebrate when it was over. But I really canโ€™t take a new pet on right now and need to make sure he goes to someone who is reliably able to care for him.

I hung out with him under cover feeding him and patting him during the storm, and he was asking to come in the houseโ€ฆ Poor little man :( I hope he finds somewhere absolutely perfect for him and experiences all the joys of inside there. I love him too. Iโ€™m just not ready for him (or anyone) to take Melbcatโ€™s place or to take on the responsibility. I never did manage to find out if he even has a microchip or his โ€˜ownersโ€™ are still around.

Iโ€™m definitely going to second guess this and fret about how heโ€™s doing, whether heโ€™s going to be adopted, wishing things had been different. Iโ€™m scared because shelters and rescues are so full and he has a few things going against him for adoptability. I wonโ€™t know where he is or be able to protect him.

But thereโ€™s a chance that this way heโ€™ll end up getting a much better life than living on scraps of food and affection outside or living with someone who is so completely overwhelmed and not coping. Iโ€™m just trying to remember that the rescuers love cats to the point of going the extra mile like I do, and trust that his future owner sees how sweet and friendly he is the way I did.

Rescuers are coming either tonight or tomorrow to get him. I just hope heโ€™s around. :::

Seagoon_@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 127d (7 replies)

what do youse guys do when cats get under your feet and you're carrying something really hot , like a kettle or fry pan or are walking up/down stairs?

i firmly tell the guys to move and I feel guilty doing it

Catfish@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 127d

Firmly/loudly tell off and foot shove. Never had an actual accident with hot things, but one with a can of beetroot demonstrated just how nasty that might be.

MeanElevator@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 127d (2 replies)

I don't think I have ever carried hot items on stairs...BUT if that happened, the cat would get pushed away with my foot (not a kick).

Love cats, but love not having burns even more.

Seagoon_@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 127d (1 reply)

I try to do the pushing with foot, sometimes they do not move. I just think it's dangerous and I try to train them not to.

MeanElevator@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 127d

My experience with cats has always been that they have very little situational awareness unless it impacts them directly.

Love them to bits, but at times they can be super frustrating.

Bottom_racer@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 127d

I was lucky with my old cat. If in the kitchen she'd be on the kitchen bench just watching. She always wanted higher ground (as abbys do). Stairs she'd race to the top / bottom. Only issue were the ambushes around corners. Got a few accidental kicks there but she kept ambushing so obviously didn't mind.

melbaboutown@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 127d

I have my feet flat on the ground and slowly shuffle to put it down, or stop in place until they move (I also tell them to move)

Taleya@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 127d

"Move it, furball".

Punkin and Cerys started playing chicken with me when they were kittens. I stopped looking where I was stepping and started swinging my feet. They learned.

Gibsonhasafluffybutt@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 127d (3 replies)

Context?

Taleya@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 127d (2 replies)

I'm converting some machines to kubuntu. However, dolphin is a bit of a bitch with winserver shares and auth, and it fucks me off having goddamn cifs hardcoded mounts to shares in fstab.

::: spoiler NERD

So i've spun up a tiny alpine vm called malcolm that basically just mirrors the winshares as nix shares.

Then His Lordship wanted a mini media player for the brewery. I have a pc300 that's perfect for that, so slapping libre/kodi on it. Of course, as detailed previously, i refuse to name MY tv shows on MY file server to please the machine. I use human names. Previously i'd written a script to symlink the movies / anime / tv shows on a winbox so i could rename the symlinks and have kodi (with a netflix skin) do its thing, but of course i don't want to do that for every farking machine and you can't share symlinks on a winbox as they're kernel-specific.

But linux treats symlinks more like shortcuts.....and you can share them.

So more scripting - linux this time - and i have a centralised Kodi share on Malcolm that is named for Kodi. The script - which i'm Working out how to run when the source directory changes - creates two copies of the dir in symlink form. One is parity (if contents of server/show matches this, ignore), the other is Recently_Added (new stuff) that i then rename with filebot and move to kodi/tv_shows.

So the script runs through, checks if there's anything new in /server/tv, if yes, then create a symlink copy in parity, and one in recently_added that i then manually name for Kodi to parse.

It also hunts and kills dead symlinks on the /mnt/kodi dir :)

Gibsonhasafluffybutt@aussie.zone · 1 pts · 127d (1 reply)

I'm glad I understood most of that lol

You've given me an idea, for which I'm grateful. I've been dragging my feet on properly utilising these server hard drives full of shows and stuff.

Much appreciate :)

Taleya@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 127d

New fileserver? Always an idea :)

(My fserve doesn't run anything but shares and i like it that way)
