You're right in that this person is out of the loop, but they're right that the mainstream has moved past hard rock for the same social signifiers they used hard rock for. It you want angst and rebellion, putting on an oldies band like rolling stone won't have the same impact that it did back then.
Yeah, might be a I wanna be special thing. I listened to a Spotify hard rock playlist s while back and it was anything but what I would consider hard rock.

Stoner/doom metal is honestly closer to progressive+hard rock than metal beyond sounding like early Sabbath
