bastardcircus: Ok, God, | am fucking wheezing, I got trained to work with mice today since I'll need them for sore experiments and the guy who trained me was like, “Yeah ok so if there’s a day where you just absolutely cannot get your mice to cooperate you can always do this™ and picks up this cone-shaped bag and just put the mouse face-first into it and shows it to me and I lose my shit because deadass it was a piping-bag of mouse. Like, the whole mouse was pressed into this cone, fur and ears and feet all pressed up against the plastic, tail sticking up absurdly out of the top of the thing. It was so unimaginably fucking funny but like the mouse was perfectly ok with it, there’s a hole for air at the bottom so she could breathe and all but it was genuinely the most absurd thing I have witnessed in months

My husband just woke up and said the exact same thing unprompted. Literally this exchange almost word-for-word.
After additional discussion and googling, the actual answer is, my dear people, mostly size, but also more subtly the proportions of the ear and tail to the rest of the body.

Hahaha nice. I was admittedly being a bit snarky with my reply but it kinda is a "you know it when you see it" thing that is difficult to describe. But yeah, mostly size. You won't see a chonky tail like that on a field mouse, that's for sure

My old boss had a tattoo with Aspen trees, as did I. I asked him once if those were Aspen trees, because I could tell by the way they are.
He was super happy someone got the reason he picked Aspen trees, and that I also had Aspen trees for the same purpose.

Long hairless tail, also that would be a huge mouse.

Mouse, mousse, what's the difference?
cybervegan@lemmy.world · -1 pts · 102d

Please also enjoy these images of a hedgehog and a human baby getting an x-ray and a bird being weighed:

That tiny bit of tape is enough to stop the hedgehog from pulling loose?

They are when they're sedated, which is the only way to image most animals. This is why imaging at the vets costs so much and is shied away from in older animals where possible. The older the animal, the riskier sedation gets, for myriad reasons.
Apytele@sh.itjust.works · 6 pts · 102d
idk ask a vet most of the animals I've worked with are larger than that
deadbeef79000@lemmy.nz · 3 pts · 102d
So, more tape then?

I've had to handle dogs and cats and when I was younger occasionally livestock. As an employed adult though I've mostly had to handle other humans, but many of the same concepts of how to be nice when you have to do something objectively uncomfortable still apply (namely, do it as fast as you possibly can without causing more damage). Restraints are actually kind of not just my specialty but also one of my subspecialties, but that's a whole different conversation. To this conversation the answer is "usually velcro and plastic buckles, on cotton fabric for the little old ladies and neoprene for people with actual muscle."
JayGray91@piefed.social · 6 pts · 102d
Uh huh. Definitely can go several ways
Apytele@sh.itjust.works · 8 pts · 102d
I guess the elevator pitch is 10y experience inpatient psychiatry including forensics ("criminally insane"), now I teach restraint classes 1x a month and other units in the hospital have a special version of a code they can use to summon me (kinda like a code blue except the patient is still, and literally kicking).

Probably. They aren't exactly known for feats of Herculean strength 🤷🏻
a_non_monotonic_function@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 102d
He likes it that way.
stray@pawb.social · 2 pts · 102d
Are you under the impression that mice and rats are only restrained briefly for their own benefit?
Apytele@sh.itjust.works · 13 pts · 102d
There's a lot of reasons a lot of things happen and the history and ethics of animal experimentation is a particularly long winded subject of which I will not be getting into any more of a debate than I have somehow gotten sucked into already.
Tiresia@slrpnk.net · -1 pts · 102d
Regardless of the animal ethics, why are you acting like a jerk?
Apytele@sh.itjust.works · 3 pts · 101d
They know it's not abuse, they have a high horse they wanna ride on someone else's post.
