Conservatives don't understand the lyrics or deeper meaning behind music. From Wikipedia:

Yes. A surprising majority of "fans" of music don't actually listen to anything but the chorus, and even that's negotiable it seems.
And if they do pay attention to any other parts, they intentionally misconstrue the lyrics to actually be completely different.
I had that happen to me. My sister and I like this band but she really likes them and goes to shows. I made her ringtone the beat of one of their songs and she said, don't you know that song is about sex? I had to listen while looking at lyrics to really understand what they were saying. As a kid I didn't really know what rage was singing about until my mom told me what each song was talking about.

Christianity media is very contradictory, at least if taken literally. The Gospels have a lot messages encouraging empathy to people regardless of their faith and social status, and ideas one could call "leftist"

The New testament is all about why you should love each other and not discriminate, and the old testament is included as a reference since Christianity evolved out of Judaism?
Well, the New Testament has plenty of Jesus acting like a general dickhead, doing some pretty despicable things, and making it abundantly clear that he does not condemn any of the atrocities that God requested in the Old Testament.
Also, the status of the Old Testament very much depends on the denomination: it's an "allegory" in Orthodox Christianity (read: when the book very clearly says that it stands for cruelty and genocide, it's actually an elaborate metaphor for sunshine and rainbows), whereas Catholicism purportedly takes it quite seriously.
Yeah, I have a hard time really caring about that particular one. They aren't missing the point (because it wasn't always there) like some make it out to be. As you said, not exactly the case.
I still know it's a person to avoid when I see it on a shirt or truck's back window, though. It IS a good indicator for that.

bigots often misidentify themselves as the victims of hate campaigns because they really do believe the lies that are embedded in dogwhistles. like… there's a lot of ICE supporters who don't have the awareness that when the current US admin calls someone "a criminal" they mean "as a classification of person" not as "person who does crimes" or when they use "Low IQ" they mean "minority"
like… there's a ton of people out there who actually think "Michele Obama is a low IQ person" is about Michele Obama specifically instead of the result of calling all Black people "low IQ"
so in the case of Orson Scott Card, what's happening is when he says "be more patient and analyze your misconceptions about people" he doesn't mean marginalized people, he means about himself, a person with a dominant identity in culture whose been gently asked to make room for other people feels marginalized by that request
For real. His books were fundamental to building my mindset of acceptance and tolerance when I was growing up. I don't know how he internally justifies his beliefs.
But so much media that uses a character that is against [hate, evil, whatever] using unmitigated violence to attack said hate.
So they’re just happy with the reductionist solution to the problem which is using violence to achieve their goal, skipping past the part where they were stopping a bad person and why they were bad.
