Hah, that was from when there was a
on banning Grail’s instance, wasn’t it?
Maybe there is something to be said for electoralism after all

Doing what must be done.

Understanding that it is a meme, but just mentioning that voting is not evil. Voting for evil is another thing tho
Why would you not vote, unless you think that your vote is being tracked and you would be put on 'list'?
Voting may not be always useful tho. I think socialists like Lenin thought that Parliamentary politics was useful for outreach and ascertaining public support.

It's useless, so why waste your time?

It can be a form of harm reduction at best. For the few minutes it takes to postal vote, I feel like it's worthwhile, personally.

It took me a while to vote last week because I went on the last day of early voting and even then it still was 60-90 minutes. If I had gone even a day earlier this would have been much lower, and despite that fact I'm still fine with the amount of time I "wasted".
I've wasted far more time on far less productive activities before, and I'm probably going to do so in the future as well. I can spare an hour and a half on the off chance that my vote actually helps something.

If it's useless, why do people have to die to get it, and why do people in power try to suppress it?
m532@lemmy.ml · -1 pts · 93d
They try to suppress it? I only hear them scream VOOT VOOT VOOT all the time.
rat@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 8 pts · 93d
Are you joking? Gerrymandering, voter ID laws, purging voter rolls, attacking mail in ballots, limiting polling places, getting MAGA goons to act as "poll watchers" to intimidate people... The Supreme Court literally just gutted the Voting Rights Act if 1965.
m532@lemmy.ml · 2 pts · 93d
I'm not joking. Here's what I think:
The whole game is rigged, it's like a casino, the house always wins.
It's never a complete wash, always a close photo finish. This is statistically way too unlikely to not be rigged. The tools you mentioned, those are the tools to rig the elections to 49/51 so the news media corpos get big clicks & big cash. Everyone who participates is more likely to be hooked, that's even more clicks.
If I were a news media company boss, I'd pay the electoral theater big bills to make it look close, that's guaranteed ROI. And not only that, it makes the state look more "democratic" than when there's an 80/20.
The votes that count are those of the big bourgeois. I assume they first decide who will win the 51/49, then they gerrymander it accordingly, and when the votes are still "wrong", they'll use other methods.
So your vote will never change the outcome, but it will always make the news corpos make more bank.

You missed people trying to strip people off voting rights recently? Or Jim Crow era voting laws? Have ya not read much history or something? Not pay attention to voting rights now?
eldavi@lemmy.ml · 4 pts · 93d
it's not useless, but it is very close to it.
there's very little that voting will do, but it's easy if you live in a liberal enough place, so you might as well use it to write in leftist candidates on your ballot.
m532@lemmy.ml · 4 pts · 93d
There's indeed benefits about this now that I think about it again.
The party can gauge it's local strength
A higher score could make people interested in the party.
eldavi@lemmy.ml · 2 pts · 93d
agreed, but on the flip side, it identify targets for the dnc to suppress and this is A LOT more likely to happen since leftists parties cannot officially operate in most liberal jurisdictions as a party (because of the dnc).
m532@lemmy.ml · -1 pts · 93d
So i'll need to compare the potential benefits to the potential downsides.
eldavi@lemmy.ml · 3 pts · 93d
It's still a benefit either way; worse case scenario is that the DNC has to burn resources to cancel your vote out in the next election. Lol
1Malayali@lemmy.ml · 0 pts · 93d
Well, if you are doing better things with the time, then likely true.
If not, the things in the previous comment still apply.

Does my vote make a difference in my district/state? No. Will I vote in every single primary and election anyway? You're goddamn right.
