9 to 5 used to include a paid lunch break. Now they want their full 8 hours. You get a longer break, but it's all on your own time, even though you can't really use it as your own time.
I got to sleep in, walk my dog for a few hours in the morning and then drive to work mid day when traffic wasn't too bad. I worked my shift and left at 8pm right when work was starting to pick up and I'd pass all my work to someone else to finish.
I would go home, hang out with my friends at the dog park until late at night then play games until 2am then sleep and repeat.
It lasted a month before they took the shift away from me because the other people weren't fast enough to load all the trucks that I could. I got moved to 2-10pm which also wasn't too bad. I just stayed up later and woke up later.
Similar here. 10:00–18:00. Got to sleep in, ride to work after it warmed up a bit, and still got home with some time remaining in the evening to do stuff.
I want my 8pm to 8am, 3 nights per week, all in a row back. Sadly, that job forced a schedule change during a merger, and career advancement is hard to find in overnight positions.

Is it unpopular? This is my work schedule and I really like it.
I am a morning person and FT WFH so that definitely plays into it…

9-5 only really sucks because everyone's on it.
The real goat is having a schedule that does not align with banks.

Which for many is basically impossible. Many open for 30 minutes in the middle of the day.

Where does the 9-5 come from? In the entirety of my life every position I’ve ever had or seen has been 8-5.

My favorite shift was noon to 8pm.

8-5 makes me crave lead 🔫
My current job is 7-3 and it’s so infinitely better for my mental health.
Never doing 8-5 or evening shifts ever again if I can help it. Barring on call weeks for jobs that require it, of course.

Anyone who thinks 9-5 is better has probably not tried 7-3.
