As a Tennessean, drink something else. Because of Jack Daniels legal thca is being criminalized in the state starting July 1.

Godric@lemmy.world · 17 pts · 76d (19 replies)

Fuck them then, I'm taking reccomendations in the price range!

Neondragon25@piefed.social · 20 pts · 76d (18 replies)

if you are looking for whiskey: Westward, Dickel, Clemens, 6666, Tincup, Heavens door, Westland, Balcones or Bear fight are good options.

If its Bourbon: Highwest, Redwood empire, smoke wagon, Penelope, Remus, Pursuit, Old forester, Michters, Russell's, Dancing panda, Lasso, Hirsch,Four roses, Basil Hayden are all good to decent options

For Scotch: monkey shoulder, Glenfiddich, Drambuie, Aberlour, Brenne, Dewars, Glenlivet and Singleton are good options

for Irish whiskey: Jameson, Writters tears, Red Breast, Slãint, and Whistler are decent picks.

For Japanese whisky: Toki (white or black) kikori and Nikka and Sato Hiki are good Japanese picks

For Canadian Whisky: Pendleton, crown, black velvet, Pike Creek and forty creek are decent options.

I tried going with options I have not seen in the comments and I tried to make sure very few was MGP or other white label distilleries. Also I was aiming in the 30ish to 60ish USD range.

FOR THE PRICE, Buffalo Trace always seemed okay for me, mostly for cocktails, but I'm not a big liquor guy. I remember loving Angel's Envy Bourbon years ago, but it wasn't super cheap.

Neondragon25@piefed.social · 4 pts · 75d

Buffalo Trace is a solid option and I agree mainly for cocktails, and most of the Angles Envy around me starts at $60ish. But also good stuff.

captainlezbian@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 74d

Buffalo trace is awesome but it's got a huge shortage

Zannsolo@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 75d (2 replies)

Lafroig is great and cheap of you like really smoky Scotch Oban is a step up and less smoky.

mech@feddit.org · 1 pts · 74d (1 reply)

Laphroaig tastes like a burnt-down hospital by the seaside.
It was legal to sell in pharmacies during the prohibition because the authorities didn't think anyone would drink it for fun.

Zannsolo@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 74d

Fools

Someonelol@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 3 pts · 76d (2 replies)

Japanese whiskeys are nice. Suntory and Nikka Days make pretty good mixers but if you wanna sip there's always Hibiki.

Neondragon25@piefed.social · 3 pts · 76d (1 reply)

Happy cake day! I thought about including Hibiki but most prices I see on it start around $50+ but I totally agree, good sipping.

shads@lemy.lol · 2 pts · 76d

Have you tried any Australians, specifically Tasmanians. I have a half dozen names I could throw out but not sure how far out of Australia they have name recognition. Well besides the Springbay but that's nowhere near the price range these days.

Zannsolo@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 75d (3 replies)

Bullet is also a solid affordable whiskey, coming higher end of take Blanton's over anything on your list

Neondragon25@piefed.social · 1 pts · 75d (2 replies)

I have 3 different Blantons bottles, 3 E.H. Taylor's, a Stagg Jr. Penelope Light, a Burnheim 20 year, and a few other notables in my high end collection. Blantons is over priced and over rated. its good, but not $110+ and hard to find good. The cask strength is worth it I think.

Zannsolo@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 75d (1 reply)

I agree it's overpriced now, I mostly drink bullet bourbon but I got a bottle for $80 at Safeway recently.

Neondragon25@piefed.social · 1 pts · 75d

Damn, yea for $80 you'll be hard pressed to find better. Good find!

teslekova@sh.itjust.works · 3 pts · 76d (1 reply)

Goddamnit, you reminded me Glenfiddich exists and my bottle ran out ages ago. You monster.

(not an alcoholic, you're not a monster, just to be clear, I just love the occasional sip of that one, it was my grandfather's favourite.)

Neondragon25@piefed.social · 2 pts · 76d

There a beautiful 12year I've seen out...enjoy the drink!

Godric@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 75d (1 reply)

Solid reccomendations, thank you! I haven't tried about 60% of the list, I'll see what the nearby stores have and get sampling!

Neondragon25@piefed.social · 2 pts · 75d

No worries, I really tried giving a list of not the most common things, a few Commons sprinkled in but I wanted to focus on good stuff thats maybe under represented or under appreciated.

TransNeko@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 75d

If you want to buy better alcohol for the price of Jack Daniels... just buy 90 proof and mix something yourself l.

Zannsolo@lemmy.world · 9 pts · 76d (3 replies)

I mean and it's terrible whiskey

7U5K3N@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 3 pts · 75d (2 replies)

Haha you are absolutely not wrong.

There's a couple higher end variants that's are drinkable. But I'm not going to give them the coin to get them.

Zannsolo@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 75d (1 reply)

Bullet is cheap and tasty

7U5K3N@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 1 pts · 75d

That's my go to. The 10 year is a staple in my house. Had some barrel? Strength a while back it was great.

Everything they make is quality

DmMacniel@feddit.org · 7 pts · 76d (1 reply)

How the eff is that even possible? One producer of a vice is criminalising another vice??

Godric@lemmy.world · 6 pts · 75d

Yep, they don't want the competition. In "dry" counties where selling booze is illegal, the party stores a county over tend to donate politically to keep it that way.

Bluegrass_Addict@lemmy.ca · 20 pts · 76d (11 replies)

ewww, what horrid whisky choice. I'd almost rather drink everlcear then touch that putrid stuff.

kandoh@reddthat.com · 16 pts · 76d

It all tastes the same after the third glass

SpruceBringsteen@lemmy.world · 7 pts · 76d (2 replies)

At least go Wild Turkey if you're going the whiskey route. Stronger, cheaper, and at least to me tastes better.

Texas_Hangover@lemmy.radio · 2 pts · 76d

I miss 151 ☹️

Zannsolo@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 75d

I puked off a shot of Wild Turkey sober, I didn't drink liquor for years, Jameson on a bachelor trip brought me back into the spirits fold.

Godric@lemmy.world · 7 pts · 76d

It's no Lagavulin paired with a steak, but it does the job!

sp3ctr4l@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 3 pts · 75d (5 replies)

See, the way I like Jack, I like it because its horrible and shitty.

There are many much better, much more well rounded bourbons and whiskeys.

But sometimes, the point is to basically kick yourself in the face, via a drink.

sp3ctr4l@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 2 pts · 75d (3 replies)

Actually no, never tried it.

I've only heard it is notoriously awful.

captainlezbian@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 74d (2 replies)

You can probably get a similar experience with the following cocktail: 1 part vodka to 1 part bitters

It may be closer to a quarter bitters but either way it's herbal as hell and bitter as fuck

sp3ctr4l@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 1 pts · 74d (1 reply)

... well now I have to try that, just to see how much I hate it or not, hahaha!

Does sound like that would basically taste like being violently kicked in the face.

captainlezbian@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 74d

Oh yeah it's definitely worth a try. Horrible stuff, but Chicagoans do build up a tolerance to it

HeyJoe@lemmy.world · 17 pts · 76d (1 reply)

Is that a 375ml bottle? That one is the 2nd worst priced bottle to buy next to the 1 liter bottle. Idk why they price them so awful but they do. Best priced is 1.75 liter then 750ml followed by the pint bottle which is the first bottle pictured here i believe. Source, worked in liquor store for 3 years.

SpruceBringsteen@lemmy.world · 8 pts · 76d

You will always pay for portability.

HootinNHollerin@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 12 pts · 76d

Bruh gettin scurvy

SanderZeldenthuis@nord.pub · 12 pts · 76d (8 replies)

Not going to get enough nutrition like that! You need to get multiple flavors!!

red_tomato@lemmy.world · 18 pts · 76d (7 replies)

Jim Beam, Jameson, Lagavulin

p0q@sh.itjust.works · 7 pts · 76d (5 replies)

One of those is not like the others...

Bishma@discuss.tchncs.de · 8 pts · 76d (1 reply)

Lagavulin, Balvenie, Fireball

ivanafterall@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 75d

Balvenie, Glenlivet, Listerinie

red_tomato@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 76d

It’s for weekends

Zannsolo@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 76d (1 reply)

Lagaluvian is more expensive Jameson is a blend Jim beam is gross

Which one are you talking about

p0q@sh.itjust.works · 1 pts · 75d

Lagavulin is the superior of the three IMO.

(I still drink the cheap stuff BC I'm poor)

Zannsolo@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 76d

Jim beam is trash.

TigerAce@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 12 pts · 75d (15 replies)

Jack Daniels is fucking disgusting. Some people even dare to consider it whiskey, which is a fucking disgrace.

Hozerkiller@lemmy.ca · 8 pts · 75d (4 replies)

Jack Daniels not being in Canada anymore is a net positive for me because i never accidentally get jack when I ask for whiakey.

HugeNerd@lemmy.ca · 2 pts · 75d (3 replies)

What do you usually get when you ask for whiakey?

Objection@lemmy.ml · 5 pts · 75d

Cut off.

Hozerkiller@lemmy.ca · 1 pts · 75d

Pretty much always 40 creek.

Rusty@lemmy.ca · 1 pts · 75d

J.P. Wisers or Forty Creek.

TransNeko@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 75d (7 replies)

Jack Daniels is as close to whiskey as America is close to Berlin.

TigerAce@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 1 pts · 74d (6 replies)

Well, there's a town in the US called Berlin. Apparently EDM people go there asking around for the Berghain, super funny haha

TransNeko@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 74d (5 replies)

the US IS A COUNTRY, Berlin is a TOWN. thats Check and a Mate.

TigerAce@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 1 pts · 74d (3 replies)

But they are very close distance wise, as one is inside the other. But if you mean the city of Berlin in Germany, then yeah, far apart in both form factor and distance.

TransNeko@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 73d (2 replies)

I am talking about relations. a town is no where near a country. Jack Daniels is no where near real whiskey

TigerAce@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 1 pts · 73d (1 reply)

There are also city states.

TransNeko@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 72d

Not in America.

mech@feddit.org · 1 pts · 74d

Berlin is a state and a city, not a town.
(At least not in Germany)

infinitecredits@lemmy.world · 0 pts · 75d (1 reply)

I bet lots of rockstars on their starting days only drank it because they didnt know better and didnt have enough money. Guns n' Roses had a song after a weird caffeinated wine that was very cheap, it's the same thing I think. It was called Night Train.

TigerAce@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 1 pts · 74d

Yeah I did the same when I was 16. Had no money and didn't know better. Just went to the store, bought some JD and drank it with friends in the park. (age limit is now raised to 18 in my country but I was legal to drink at 16).

hOrni@lemmy.world · 9 pts · 76d

As an alcoholic with anxiety attacks, I miss being just an alcoholic. I used to feel joy at the sight of a bottle of whisky.

Sergio@piefed.social · 9 pts · 76d (2 replies)

Everyone's talking about the whisky, but are we not gonna discuss how Maruchan's Creamy Chicken is one of their worst flavors?

ivanafterall@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 75d (1 reply)

Beef is really the only option imo.

Sergio@piefed.social · 2 pts · 75d

Beef is OK but straight Chicken is best.

teslekova@sh.itjust.works · 8 pts · 76d (2 replies)

Have some class goddamnit! You are living like an animal!

Glenfiddich and Nong Shim Shin Ramyun Black, get it now!

captainlezbian@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 74d (1 reply)

I'm so glad I discovered their green variety. It hit the cravings I've had since quitting meat

teslekova@sh.itjust.works · 3 pts · 73d

That sounds interesting. I am always trying to cut down on meat consumption in the laziest ways. Thx.

Edit: And proper vegan! Yep, good stuff. My brother may one day respect me. ^_^

Not pictured: the pack of American Spirits in OP’s back pocket.

sp3ctr4l@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 7 pts · 75d (5 replies)

I wanna know how you buy just two packets of ramen.

What, do they sell the packets individually at a corner store?

STUNT_GRANNY@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 75d (1 reply)

Where I shop, individual packets are your only option if you want something other than basic chicken or beef flavor.

sp3ctr4l@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 1 pts · 75d

Huh.

I've not seen that. Everywhere I've been, its the little mini pallettes of... 10 or 12 or something.

ivanafterall@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 75d (2 replies)

Every store I've ever been to sells them individually?

bitchkat@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 75d

My grocery store absolutely sells singles or 12 packs.

Oppopity@lemmy.ml · 2 pts · 75d

Wtf.

nullspace@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 75d

lol poverty and alcoholism

ddplf@szmer.info · 5 pts · 75d

[serious] If you can afford whiskey, you can afford decently balanced diet.

My grocery receipts got a whole lot thinner after I stopped drinking alcohol. And trust me when I say that in my country alcohol is super cheap.

MehBlah@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 75d (6 replies)

You must be poor drinking that swill.

TransNeko@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 75d (5 replies)

I can buy cheaper alcohol that is better quality than the swill that Jack Daniels is.

MehBlah@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 75d (3 replies)

As far as that goes Canadian mist which is a blended whiskey is far superior to fucking jack daniels.

TransNeko@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 74d (2 replies)

mate... even 90 proof is better than Jack Daniels.

MehBlah@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 74d (1 reply)

90 proof is more than 80 which is what jack is if I recall correctly.

TransNeko@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 73d

Jack Daniels tastes like someone put a rotting rat corpse into everclear.

captainlezbian@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 74d

Yeah, when I'm broke I drink old crow

HugeNerd@lemmy.ca · 3 pts · 75d (1 reply)

Black Label is the absolute minimum I'll go. When times are better, Aberlour 16 or Glenfarclas 15.

raid_dad@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 75d

I was in the same boat until I discovered the glory of Famous Grouse. It’s not bad, not great, $32 for a handle and hits about the same as black label. I’d still prefer a nice single malt, but times are tough.

Etterra@discuss.online · 3 pts · 75d
