Always a delight as a British person living in England, you get the fun of scrolling around to try to find whether it's:

  • United Kingdom
  • U.K.
  • Great Britain
  • GBR
  • England

My bet is too many cooks:

It's a static list, sorted once at creation by the original author, with UK as Great Britain.

Then a different author came along and was told to replace GB with UK, probably did a find & replace all across the codebase, and didn't notice the list was sorted.

Always fun to search for Germany in those lists. I've seen Germany listed under D and Deutschland under G.

πŸ‡¬πŸ‡· (4G only) and πŸ‡·πŸ‡Έ (4G only) have me cackling, too

4G only is my favourite gender

I suspect they have sorted by the name and displayed a localised version which uses the truncated full version: The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

ETA fixed typo

Where does it claim to be alphabetical?

paks@feddit.uk · 15 pts · 61d (5 replies)

It's not claiming, but it quite clearly is.

It's just that Great Britain and the Hellenic Republic have a different display text.

TheWizardOfOdd@fedinsfw.app · 13 pts · 61d (2 replies)

Probably sorted by ISO 3166-1 alpha-3 country code. United Kingdom is GBR, Guernsey is GGY, Greece is GRC.

paks@feddit.uk · 8 pts · 61d (1 reply)

I thought about codes but wouldn't that put Germany before Denmark? Maybe there's some other code system

Vibe sort?

It’s not claiming, but it quite clearly is.

Your screenshot kind if proofs it isn't πŸ˜…

Agreed, the words on the screen are not alphabetical (I'm just theorising there's a hidden database column which is).

But in my book, if they're mostly alphabetical, that implies the intention was to be fully alphabetical and something's gone wrong. But maybe that's just me πŸ˜‚

Jan Mayen is part of Norway, and Svalbard is under Norway, but due to [long reason] not part of the Kingdom, and with Russian settlements

Kenny2999@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 61d (1 reply)

They've even put Austria among European countries. Correct spelling:

Successful_Try543@feddit.org · 1 pts · 61d

No, that's missing an "i". It should read Austrialia.

AI_toothbrush@lemmy.zip · 3 pts · 61d

Oh god, svalbard wraps arround so it looks like "svalbard and jan" and "mayen"

DudeImMacGyver@kbin.earth · 2 pts · 61d (1 reply)

Maybe they just forgot where the letter M goes or maybe it's vibe coded slop.
