hello fedi! looking for an actually decent search engine! any recommendations?

by actually decent i mean:
- no "ai". zero. whatsoever. zilch. nada. none. did i mention zero.
- not just repackaging results from other search engines
- not run by complete and utter fuckwads

thanks! :) /gen

@GroupNebula563 @asklemmy @askfedi i am not aware of any, nor do i think it's likely that one exists.

The level of anti-bot defenses deployed across the internet in response to LLM crawlers is so high that it's basically impossible to create an independent search index in 2026. If you're not already one of a handful of trusted crawlers you're just gonna get cloudflare and anubis block pages.

@GroupNebula563 @asklemmy @askfedi the one idea i had was a browser extension where users seeing an index-worthy page could click a button to manually add the DOM from their session to a curated index, after passing whatever anti scrape countermeasures were in use.

No crawling, just users voting "i think other people should be able to find this page".

If it weren't for point 2 I would have recommended Searx. And if it weren't for point 1 I would have recommended Ecosia, Qwant, or Mojeek.

startpage.com

Marginalia search is great for sifting past all the big tech results that usually show up in search and for finding smaller websites

GroupNebula563@mastodon.social · 0 pts · 60d

@besselj that is one I actively use but the process for indexing sites is a bit hands on :P

@GroupNebula563 @asklemmy @askfedi I've been daily driving Uruky, it's got a long ways to go but progress is being made. (there's definitely a lot of things that #Kagi still does better.)

https://uruky.com/

Been trying to keep track of bugs and suggestions i have

@GroupNebula563 marginalia ? the results aren't very broad though

@GroupNebula563 @asklemmy @askfedi I guess clew.se ticks these boxes, not sure how useful though

clouderst@abc.clouderst.xyz · 1 pts · 53d

@GroupNebula563 @asklemmy @askfedi doesn't really exist, the closest would be brave, but we know who runs brave...

Recently ecosia and qwant have started serving queries from their own shared index EuSP, but they still mostly rely on bing and google.

There's also mojeek, but their index is small, around 11-13 billion web pages and local search does basically nothing

hexagonwin@lemmy.today · 1 pts · 59d

i'm using ecosia.org and etools.ch, but these are all 'repackaging from other engines'.

maybe try yandex (ya.ru)?

@GroupNebula563
I have tried 🐶 kagi.com/ in the past and had a good experience with it. It does have AI tho.
🌊search.waterfox.com/ clears 2 out of 3. The results are repackaged from google just like startpage
The only one left is 🍏 www.mojeek.com/ which I wouldn't necessarily call a decent search engine. 🥀 www.ecosia.org/ has AI and 🤓 www.qwant.com/ just exists for whatever reason.

contrasocial@mastodon.social · 0 pts · 60d

@loremipsum @GroupNebula563

Qwant is unfortunately fully AI, they just don't advertise it as such.

GroupNebula563@mastodon.social · 0 pts · 60d

@loremipsum unfortunately all of those are prone to the issues outlined above

@GroupNebula563 @asklemmy @askfedi Since switching to @Vivaldi I've switched almost entirely to @StartpageSearch 🔎

@GroupNebula563 @asklemmy @askfedi

I don't know how they get their results or from where, but I like StartPage for the lack of AI.
