Out of every big company out there, steam has the easiest path forward to do so. No shareholders. Gabe can easily do what's right. He won't though. They're not even blocked. Valve did the absolute bare minimum to skirt past China's restrictions. The only thing they did was make it so you can't search or filter by that tag. The tagged games themselves remain accessible.
I mean, I guess it's better than all of Steam being blocked like it has been in the past. Not really their fault. Gaming is really frowned on my the Chinese government in general since it's harder to control the subject matter than with videos that can just be scanned for key words and blocked or edited. But sucks that they even have an LGBTQ+ classification at all. Even if it may have originally been to help LGBTQ+ people find inclusive media, it's obvious that those kinds of things are always used for censorship more than inclusivity. The flags should instead be on the anti-LGBTQ+ content, not regular, inclusive of real society content.
I've got no problem here. It might've only been temporarily blocked. LGBTQ+ stuff isn't illegal in China, just porn. Unfortunately for steam most games with the LGBTQ+ tag also have the NSFW or Hentai tags, which are blocked.
But searching with the LGBTQ+ tag seems to work at this point.
I think Fuck China and Fuck Russia would be more useful responses to this.
Different countries have different laws, should not be a surprise.
If you want to make business there you follow the laws.
Same as the reason why mobiles now all have USB-C, laws in the EU.
Or why you can decline to have your data collected (if any website doesn't just ignore your choice) because of Laws in some country.
Is it terrible that a country is violating, what we consider human rights? yes.

I wouldn't say that, usually they start organically from what I've seen. It's more so that they are blown up into much bigger issues than they actually are by those seeking power whether that be to attack a group or to galvanize their base. Starting a culture war out of thin air is nearly impossible. Like imagine getting people to fight over which end to crack an egg.
Yeah but it's not like that tension came from nowhere whatsoever. There was already some tension there even without any media. Now it becoming a national or global conversation for years upon years is very arguably overblown as compared to home much natural tension was there and how important the issue actually is in the scheme of things.

Should they withdraw from the US as well for their support of Israel? Or their immigration abuses? Or for the rampant corruption?
Companies generally operate in any country meeting the requirements of anyone that is not in breach of international law.
Leave activism to people and politicians.
