Some games will be more obscure than others. Every game I post will have had a US release. And is a game I’ve personally played.

Answer will be revealed in 8 hours (if no one replies correctly)

The classic "we have Warcraft III at home"!

64bithero@lemmy.world · 11 pts · 31d

It actually predates ROC by a few months hahaha

DigDoug@lemmy.world · 8 pts · 31d

It's not Warcraft, it's Battleart.

😕

lath@piefed.social · 6 pts · 30d

Yup. Never heard of it either.

pleb_maximus@piefed.zip · 2 pts · 30d

Oh, I remember playing it as a kid.

Wasn't nearly as good as StarCraft ot WarCraft though.

dom@lemmy.ca · 20 pts · 31d (6 replies)

Similar vein: this was my "we have war craft at home"

Can anyone name it?

Silic0n_Alph4@lemmy.world · 20 pts · 31d

Tzar: The Burden of the Crown.

I’d recognise that castle anywhere!

wiezy_lrwi@programming.dev · 10 pts · 31d

Tzar!

shirasho@feddit.online · 4 pts · 31d (3 replies)

This game...well... demo was amazing. I just wish they had actually completed it.

dom@lemmy.ca · 2 pts · 31d (2 replies)

What do you think was missing from the game? It felt complete to me

shirasho@feddit.online · 2 pts · 29d (1 reply)

More map variety and a more complete campaign. As a child, I played the heck out of it, but as an adult, there just isn't the same content draw that games like AoE1 had.

If there is one game from that era that I really want remade, it is Tzar.

dom@lemmy.ca · 1 pts · 29d

Oh yeah, fair points

one_old_coder@piefed.social · 11 pts · 31d (2 replies)

3D houses and more pixels, must be something between 1995 and 2000. I have never played that though.

halloejsovs@lemmy.world · 6 pts · 31d (1 reply)

Nah def older than 2000.

zikzak025@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 31d

Can't be much older than that though. Rome: Total War 1 was in 2004 and looked miles prettier than this.

Antium@lemmy.world · 9 pts · 31d

That looks familiar to a game I played back in mid 2000's. The UI looks similar but I think it was white not red. Dark War, or Dark something: War.

NrdyN8@lemmy.world · 8 pts · 31d

Not the answer, but the screenshot reminds me a lot of Dragonshard from ‘05.

egrets@lemmy.world · 8 pts · 31d

I tried to find it out with a web search for my own curiosity (I wouldn't have shared it), but all I learned was that the RTS market was insanely saturated around the time 3D RTSs were gaining steam.

There are so many.

raininthebowl@lemmy.zip · 5 pts · 31d

Sonic Adventures 2

hooferboof@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 31d (1 reply)

Warlords battle cry 3?

luthis@lemmy.nz · 3 pts · 31d

Holy shit memory unlocked

RightHandOfIkaros@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 31d (1 reply)

Reminds me of the Lord of the Rings Battle for Middle Earth RTS. That was a great game.

EDIT: I was thinking of War of the Ring, which is older than Battle for Middle Earth by one year.

VerseAndVermin@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 31d

I still have my War of the Ring discs! I should back those up. What a fun game!

chameleon@fedia.io · 4 pts · 31d

For a second, I was wondering if it's Dominant Species. But I don't think it had anything resembling human houses or cool UI.

Wildmimic@anarchist.nexus · 4 pts · 31d

this is the first time i have actually no idea lol

Donjuanme@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 31d (1 reply)

I'd guess majesty but I'd be incorrect, too much control over units...

zikzak025@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 31d

Was thinking the same at first, but Majesty 1 was 2D and I don't think Majesty 2 had quite this style

RavenofDespair@lemmy.ml · 2 pts · 31d (1 reply)

what are the units they look like goblins?

64bithero@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 31d

Tribal lizard people !

grahamja@reddthat.com · 2 pts · 29d (1 reply)

Was this game fun? I would love more early 2000s rts games!

64bithero@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 29d

If I’m being honest with you, I really didn’t like it. Right after this I did get WC3 and I never looked back.

If you’d like other classic early 00s games might I recommend Empire Earth or Star Wars Galactic Battlegrounds

Balldowern@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 31d

I don't know the game, but it looks like an older version of Age of Empires. The houses & town centers. I've only played AoE-2.

slazer2au@lemmy.world · 0 pts · 31d (1 reply)

Warcraft 2?

d00ery@lemmy.world · 20 pts · 31d

It deffo has a Warcraft III vibe, but I'm pretty sure Warcraft II used flat isometric sprites. (But not sure enough so I searched for it lol)

Skasi@lemmy.world · -2 pts · 31d (1 reply)

Oh I have definitely played this game before! It's a game with multiple factions and each faction collects different resources. There's something like five resources and each faction needs 3 or so of them. Iirc these salamanders were sort of monk/magic/nature-ish or something along those lines. I think there were also humans (perhaps space marine style?) and some other species as factions.

edit:

Please no image search …

I found the name. Is describing everything I remember about the game to an AI allowed, or does that loosely fall into something like a "no image search" rule?

64bithero@lemmy.world · 19 pts · 31d

The idea for the challenge is to just guess . If you can’t remember I’d consider it “against the rules” I will allow you typing in a game name you think it is and seeing the screenshots look similar.

It’s just to easy and ruins the fun for someone to pass an image to Google search or AI and they find it for you …
