Disregarding current event, why was it always said if you eat Taco Bell your going to have the burning shits or something? I've eaten it for years and nothing even happened.
If you don't eat enough fiber-- which a lot of Americans do not do-- suddenly eating a lot of it will cause it to speed run through your system. Beans are high in fiber.
As far as burning shits, that's just weakness to hot sauce.
Because your garden variety unhealthy american who survives off fast food and takeout eats very, very little fiber. So they eat something with beans in it and they are totally unprepared for a significant amount of fiber.
I've also heard theories that because it's already in little pieces people don't chew it well, which also will upset your stomach.
Right. I think the "Mexican Food gives you the shits" probably started from people originally saying they got sick (drinking the water) in Mexico, and it stayed the rumor that Mexican food made in the US does the same.
Others just don't get enough fiber in their diet, so the fiber heavy Taco Bell food (beans, rice, even the meat has high fiber additives cut with the beef) makes them take a normal shit but it's looser than their constpiated ass is used to and call it diarrhea.
It doesn't give me diarrhea but it does burn coming out cuz I like the hottest hot sauce they got. Burns even more with my home made tacos, cuz I make hot sauce with habenero instead of jalepeno or cyanne pepper. It's worth the pain in one end for the pleasure of the other, tho.
That was once in 2006. Taco Bell has been pretty strict about internal auditing for health concerns for ages and was the first who gets their lettuce from their supplier whom a lot of other restaurants use and haven't done anything yet. I used to work at one back close to the 2006 outbreak, and since then we've seen more McDonald's outbreaks and I'm not surprised at all.
Americans have weird diets. For decades, they joked about how eating Chinese food makes you hungry an hour later, and how eating any food with fiber gives the shits. They also wake up in the middle of the night to eat a full meal.
You probably get enough fiber in your diet. Most people who eat a lot of fast food, don't get enough fiber. That's generally what causes the Taco Bell shits, not the low quality.
Because making jokes about "foreign" cuisine is easy and doesn't need context when the whole herd has a general xenophobic understanding. See: Westernised Chinese food and headaches from MSG (a total myth)
Quoted "foreign because no, , Taco Bell is not actually Mexican, but ask your nearest "taco bell shits" joker if there's a difference and they'll say it's the same end result. Shit, ask the joker if they even eat Taco Bell and half will say no or give some "only when I'm drunk" explanation.
My mexican+beer shits are the same as my wings+beer shits, brat+beer shits, and steak+whiskey shits. AKA my weekend shits, where I tend to have less vegetables and more alcohol.
Add in variability with the gen pop for probably adding more hot sauce and having more dairy than their usual diet.
No idea why anyone would say that. A soft taco has like 2g of fiber. Here's the menu. Feel free to click around and prove me wrong but nothing I saw on the best sellers list had more than like 5g and those are things meant to be shared
I saw on the best sellers list had more than like 5g **and those are things meant to be shared **
Are you from the US? Nothing from the best sellers menu is meant to be shared.
Whenever I go to Taco Bell, I usually eat a few different items from the menu. Just 1 soft taco is tiny. I might do a grilled cheese burrito (7g) and 2 doritos locos tacos (2 x 3g), total 13g. Or a mexican pizza (8g) and a chalupa (4g), total 12g. Or if I want to pretend to be healthy, I'll get a cantina chicken bowl (10g).
Are both of these options terrible for me? Yes. Should I feel bad for eating portions that other countries consider are for two people? Probably! Am I waiting in a drive thru line right now? Absolutely!!
When your body is conditioned to expect whole foods
Uh, sir. This is 'Murica. Our diet consists purely of ground beef disks or ground mystery meat tubes with either red, white, or yellow squirts on top. Accompany that with a big-gulp sized glass of Coca-cola. Or, even better, an ice cold—I'm talking Rocky Mountain ice cold—beer. n now we're talkin.
They use sub-standard ingredients in the least responsible way possible, and have been the subject of multiple food outbreaks and recalls going back to the 80's, when I'm pretty sure they were called out for using lower grade (by USDA standards) meat.
Then at some point they got caught for using Horse Meat in their food, and I think that sort of clenches it.
No horse meat was ever found in Taco Bell meat in the United States
Traces of horse DNA (less than 1%) were found in Taco Bell meat in the UK due to shared processing equipment at upstream suppliers, at a time where supermarkets were selling up to 30% horse mixed in with beef (at Tesco)
The meat lawsuit you mention was also bullshit, and Taco Bell won that, proving their beef was of high quality and purity
Taco Bell has a fantastic track record. They were the ones that tested the lettuce, cut it off from sale, and blew the whistle on the supplier publicly

Because joking about Mexican food causing the shits is a common practice, and so is trying to get cheap laughs in online forums.

Seeing as it's so similar to "Montezuma's Revenge" I'm betting that you're right, and it's all just racism.

No, that’s travelers’ diarrhea aka don’t drink the water.

No dude it's about having the shits, not fucking racism.

My bad, I thought you were making an insightful observation. I'll be sure not to assume that from you in the future.

Out of curiosity: does the chain exist anywhere outside of the US?
zerofk@lemmy.zip · 2 pts · 37d
Yes, they are in Asia, Australia, North and South America, and a few countries in Europe. That said, I’ve never seen them.

It's low in fiber and greasy. When your body is conditioned to expect whole foods, stuff like that gets shot right back out.
usualsuspect191@lemmy.ca · 4 pts · 39d
Wait, another comment said it's because it's high in fibre. Seems like it's a meme that nobody actually knows why, or even experiences it?

Compare that to when I go to McDonald's, where a quarter pounder with cheese (or Royale With Cheese in France) just has 2g of fiber and that's definitely one meal (still not meant to be shared). https://www.mcdonalds.com/us/en-us/product/quarter-pounder-with-cheese.html#accordion-c921f9207b-item-842cb18782

Mexican food is more spicy. That's all. The scandals mentioned in other comments are easily debunked.
It's just spicy food

Spicy?
Taco Bell?
I mean their hottest sauce packets are not even Tabasco hot.
I’m not super spice tolerant and it’s WAY down on the hot scale.
