Combined with the fee increase to 10%, this seems like an effort to boost profitability for an IPO.
EvergreenGuru@lemmy.world · 47 pts · 10d
Unfortunate that the plan is to go public. Ideally the people who run it would be valued as stewards and curators instead of interchangeable cogs.
I hope to see one of these DIY platforms eventually become a cooperative.

Capitalism ain't ever gonna be your friend. Not gonna be a friend to artists who outlive their usefulness, either.

Not patreon style but etsy style, I have hope for Mayhem Marketplace. There's also a POC run marketplace that's supposed to be co-op but I haven't seen anything on it recently and can't remember the name.

Well that shit I read he was already a billionaire does he really need more money? Fuck this bullshit.

I will start asking creators I support to switch to Ko-fi.
artyom@piefed.social · 6 pts · 10d
I wish they'd just switch to Zelle...
ltxrtquq@lemmy.ml · 2 pts · 9d
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zelle
I don't know how much of an improvement that would really be in the long-term
artyom@piefed.social · 1 pts · 9d
Why's that?
ltxrtquq@lemmy.ml · 1 pts · 9d
I don't know big American banks to be very consumer friendly, and
This part tells me that your individual bank probably isn't a huge fan of it, and there's no guarantee that it won't change in the future. And finally,
If there is a problem with the service, I'm not sure how helpful Zelle would be in fixing it.
artyom@piefed.social · 0 pts · 9d
They're not supposed to be. The thing is, in this case, the consumers' interest is aligned with the banks, and against companies like PayPal/Venmo, Cash App, Patreon, credit card companies, and a hundred other payment processors who are all trying to take a relatively large portion of the transaction simply because they can.
It was created by the banks, so yes, they definitely are.
Zelle functions like cash, ACH, or wire transfer. Similarly, it has no protections like cash. There is no intermediary, which means no one to collect fees, but also no one to protect you in the case that you mistakenly give your money to the wrong person. It's up to you to ensure that you're sending your money to the right place.
slowclap@social.smplfi.com · 0 pts · 9d
@artyom as someone who is trying hard to build a better way to support people. The payment processor math (Stripe) is absolutely brutal. I wanted a much lower overhead than I ended up with, but most of what I do have, I never see!
It’s important to me to not try and mask this stuff as an extra charge or fee and keep things transparent as possible. I wish there was a better way.

"First, the people who work at Patreon are special, beautiful humans, through and through."
Second... Fuck those worthless humans, we want endless growth until we die sad and still unfulfilled.
Pamplemoose guy, you suck.

Maybe he should have stuck to music
boaratio@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 9d
But taking a 30% of all donations is way more lucrative than being in a band no one likes.
sem@piefed.blahaj.zone · 2 pts · 9d
Agree except i loved pomplamoose! Their music videos were groundbreaking at least for me.
I like Scary Pockets a lot too.
db2@lemmy.world · 17 pts · 10d
Maybe they should start a Patron to raise funds...
thefluffiest@feddit.nl · 13 pts · 10d
Getting your ass kicked out the door, but you’re supposed to feel grateful ffs
JoeyJoeJoeJr@lemmy.ml · 31 pts · 10d
Pretty sure this is for people to thank their departing friends and teammates. Not the other way around.
psycotica0@lemmy.ca · 16 pts · 10d
Let me say, as a person who worked at a company that used to silently disappear people, it sucked finding out in Thursday that so-and-so has been gone for a week and a half and wasn't coming back.
So I, at least, appreciate the idea that they get to communicate at all.
News still sucks, but I wanted to throw that in
Passerby6497@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 10d
Only thing worse than that is finding out day of because you're the one that has to terminate all their accounts. Did that to two of my coworkers in the span of about 18 months....
Tollana1234567@lemmy.today · 10 pts · 10d
so many youtube creators depend on patreon, wonder where they go next.
makeshift0546@lemmy.today · -5 pts · 10d
Yeah I'm sure they'll leave in mass 🙄
shiftymccool@piefed.ca · 13 pts · 10d
...en masse
magnue@lemmy.world · 8 pts · 10d
Crossont

psycotica0@lemmy.ca · 6 pts · 10d
No, they'll leave during church service!
Do all Christians call it mass, or is that just a Catholic thing...? 🤔
Curious_Canid@piefed.ca · 2 pts · 9d
Protestants don't call it mass.
NickwithaC@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 9d
Sorry you got downvoted. You have a valid point.

I've read through just out of curiosity. The severance package is:
Is this common in the US? This really feels like nothing. I do not know whether there are other remunerations funded by the government, but 4 months of pay after being laid off really is not very much.
Is this company paying out a very small sum to their employees or is it common to give very little money to fired people?
madcaesar@lemmy.world · 34 pts · 9d
Buddy, this is above average in the US. Usually you just get a kick in the ass on your way out.
ranzispa@mander.xyz · 8 pts · 9d
Absurd. That is a terrible custom.
turmacar@lemmy.world · 7 pts · 9d
They're joking, but most of the US are "Right to Work" states. Meaning, on paper, you have the 'right' to quit your job without reprisal, but in practice the company can fire you without compensation. They owe for anything you've already done, but that's about it.
I was thinking their package was pretty generous but you're right it's very basic for other places.
ranzispa@mander.xyz · 3 pts · 9d
Were I come from 4 months is the bare minimum. To be fair, you do not get your full salary but a reduced amount; however depending on the conditions that can extend up to 2 years.
Difference here is that it is not the company itself paying you that money but it is rather a government system which is payed directly by the workers.
It's a system which is not advantageous if you never lose your job, since you have to pay for it regardless; but comes very handy if you ever end up needing it.
The company also has to pay you 20-33 days of salary for every year you've been working there.
THE_GR8_MIKE@lemmy.world · 15 pts · 9d
That is a lot more than a lot of people get. Especially the healthcare and laptop thing. Healthcare usually ends immediately and you don't get any gifts on the way out.
KairuByte@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 2 pts · 8d
Clarification, healthcare usually lasts till the end of the month, because that’s what already been paid for.
KairuByte@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 6 pts · 8d
Ha, honestly as someone living in the US that sounds like a lot more than I’ve ever got.
makeshift0546@lemmy.today · 9 pts · 10d
Patron fires mostly middle manager, gives a great 16 week severance plus a year of healthcare and extras, says AI isn't replacing employees, and y'all still screeching 🤣
Nothing will ever make you happy 🤣
potustheplant@feddit.nl · 16 pts · 10d
People losing their jobs should never make anyone happy.
magnue@lemmy.world · 7 pts · 10d
Middle managers losing their jobs will always make me happy
Passerby6497@lemmy.world · -4 pts · 10d
Not if they're middle management, there's not anyone who does actually does anything useful there.
makeshift0546@lemmy.today · -9 pts · 10d
But it does have to happen at times 🤷♂️ and here y'all are screeching
potustheplant@feddit.nl · 5 pts · 10d
This is either b8 or you're just not a very nice person.
makeshift0546@lemmy.today · -8 pts · 10d
👌👍
DrSteveBrule@mander.xyz · 4 pts · 10d
Why does it have to happen?
Janx@piefed.social · 2 pts · 10d
What are you on about? It's literally enshittification. We've seen this 1000 times before, from 1000 different services and companies. That's why people recognize the beginning...

I support a podcast on Patreon but the special content has never worked properly for subscribers.
