I usually name every character in such games because I like that it makes my playthrough slightly more unique. I'm surprised that Crono and Lucca have their original names though (the screenshots aren't particularly fresh). But given that I gave Marle such a lame name I guess I wasn't feeling creative back then...
This reminded me of playing Saga Frontier. In that game you can be a robot, and there is a guy that always adds a G to the end of whatever you name the robot, if you choose to rename them.
from the SF wiki:
T260G is one of three characters who can be renamed at the beginning. However, a G will always be added to the end of the name, at Uncle Taco's request.
It certainly would have been funnier had Square put in some code that recognized you did this and had them respond along the lines of, “are you fucking with me?”
