Oh wow, they have an audio sample and everything! Looks like it's "for jeo" (pronounced like "Mateo")

Aka, pretend it's Spanish, since it's a word from pretend Spanish (specifically Esperanto, not Portuguese)
zarkanian@sh.itjust.works · 2 pts · 19d
J has an H sound in Spanish, not a Y sound.
SpatchyIsOnline@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 19d
Wasn't Esperanto made by a Polish dude?
mnemonicmonkeys@sh.itjust.works · 1 pts · 19d
No idea. Also, my comment is mostly a joke

I feel like if you need an audio sample to get people to pronounce your name correctly, you should just name it something else....

I enjoy how there's the correct answer, and then there's the other answers in this thread. 🙃
pnwpixel@programming.dev · 3 pts · 20d
Thanks for this. I should have known it'd be somewhere like that.
undefined@lemmy.hogru.ch · 23 pts · 20d
It’s pronounced like the Esperanto word it’s based on, forĝejo similar to English forge.
pnwpixel@programming.dev · 3 pts · 20d
Never knew about Esperanto, but that was fun to learn about.
undefined@lemmy.hogru.ch · 3 pts · 20d
It can still be pretty Euro-centric but it’s awesome to be able to communicate with people from any number of countries at the same time.

Next up: lojban
Corbin@programming.dev · 1 pts · 19d
Lojban is so much easier to speak than Esperanto! We actually recently talked in
#lojbanon Libera about how to pronounce the word in question and our answer is something like{fordzeiio}if one likes the slinkuui semantics or{fordzei'o}otherwise.hperrin@lemmy.ca · 18 pts · 20d
Forge Joe is how I pronounce it.

Lauchmelder@feddit.org · 3 pts · 20d
who's joe?
yetAnotherUser@lemmy.ca · 1 pts · 20d
xia@lemmy.ca · 5 pts · 20d
I keep reading it as "four-gee-joe", but I'm pretty sure that is not the right pronounciation.
Wiz@midwest.social · 7 pts · 20d
As a speaker of Esperanto, I believe they used the Esperanto for the noun "forge" which is spelled 'forĝejo' with a facy-pants g-circumflex.
In Esperanto, the G with a hat is pronounced like the soft G in forge. The J is pronounced like the letter Y, like in the English word fjord.
So, I don't know if the makers of the tool intended the Esperanto pronunciation to be used. But if it is, the pronunciation would be like forge-AY-o.
sandwichsaregood@lemmy.world · 7 pts · 20d
Its named after the Esperanto word, but the intended pronunciation is for-JAY-oh.

Nice keyboard
pnwpixel@programming.dev · 2 pts · 20d
Thanks. It's the only swipe enabled keyboard I've found for my degoogled phone. They have their own F-Droid repo as well
