A US Navy guided-missile destroyer spent four days last month without working toilets, galley services and air conditioning in the blistering heat of the South China Sea after the warship lost power.
The incident was due to an engineering failure aboard the warship, the US 7th Fleet said in a statement to CNN, another setback as concerns mount over the heavy strain on the US Navy due to the Iran war and global commitments.
The USS Benfold, an Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer, was on routine operations in the Indo-Pacific on July 24 when an “engineering casualty involving its generators” occurred, Navy Cmdr. Matthew Comer, spokesperson for the 7th Fleet, said.

Machines are not like stocks. You can’t just short them and expect to “profit” somehow.
Remember how everyone was laughing at Russia’s military when their much-vaunted equipment turned out to be poorly maintained garbage? Our Glorious Leader is doing the same thing to our navy.

I have a family member who works logistics for the DoD. He's done this job for years around the globe, including Afghanistan without complaint. I keep getting Signal messages complaining about how bad things are, what a cluster fuck it is and how everyone, including the brass, are at their wits end.

Destroy public schools, destroy the military, destroy scientific innovation, stamp out vaccines, eviscerate every social support system, and deny anyone but the most privileged any meaningful medical care.
Wow, thank God no one at the top of our government has ever been associated with Russia or any of the other oligarchs around the world. Because otherwise it might start to seem like they really are enemy agents out to destroy the country. Hah hah wouldn't that be crazy?

This has been a long time coming for the navy. The higher brass of the navy are the most management brained leaders out of the military branches.
A while ago they arbitrarily decided that operation tempo was the most important metric when deciding on promotions. So now every single admiral only cares about maxing out deployment schedules to the detriment of things like training, safety, maintenance, and quality of life for its service members.
It's no coincidence that the navy is having a hard time recruiting and reenlisting when they are so abusive to their sailors, all so the brass can keep up the operational tempo they set upon themselves.
The whole higher command of the navy needs to be re-worked and brought down to earth for a reality check. This is what happens when you keep the weird ass traditions that try and completely isolate officers from the enlisted.
Tbh prob a good thing they fucked up the military so hard considering what they've been using it for lately.

The separation between officers and enlisted is actually a pretty good check against the Peter Principle.

How so?
chuckleslord@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 11h
No, cause both enlisted and officer tracks still experience the principle. It's not like you don't get promoted to leadership in the enlist track, it's just limited how far those promotions can go.
TranscendentalEmpire@lemmy.today · 3 pts · 11h
This, plus I was being a bit more literal. As in the navy physically keeps enlisted and officers isolated from each other. They eat in different places, sleep in different places, and even use different stairwells. The average navy officer has significantly less face time around the people they command compared to other branches and they live on a ship.
Ship stratification makes it to where officers are generally unaware of the moral of the people the are in charge of and are more isolated from the negative consequences of their own actions.

As I understand it the big crossover here is the command master chief who works directly with the CO and XO as well as the senior enlisted ranks. Via them the officers would absolutely be aware.
TranscendentalEmpire@lemmy.today · 1 pts · 3h
The senior NCO can be just as out of the loop as the CO or NCO, especially if they are understaffed and overworked. This also requires the Co and XO to respect the opinions of senior NCO which is not a given, especially in the navy.
iknewitwhenisawit@fedinsfw.app · 2 pts · 9h
That limitation is the point.
The Peter Principle says that people keep getting promoted as long as they are doing a good job. Once they stop being good, they are stuc, and remain doing a job... poorly. So hierarchical organizations always end up with leadership being mostly shit.
Having a cap which says that enlisted men can never get promoted beyond a certain point means that good enlisted troops are "stuck", and therefore remain at a job they are good at.

Yeah, this way they don't have to get promoted to their level of incompetence, they can start off at their level of incompetence and get promoted from there!

Maybe the military will finally uphold their oath to protect the constitution from domestic threats before long.
Biden fucked up by not shooting trump in the face as an official presidential act.
GolfFoxtrotLima@sh.itjust.works · 1 pts · 11h
Yeah, Biden should have given Trump the death penalty
village604@adultswim.fan · 2 pts · 10h
No, he could have done it with his bare hands. SC said that the president can't be prosecuted for official acts. Protecting the Constitution is the Commander and Chief's duty.

At this point, US military vessels are like the Riley Gaines of warships.
