they were originally suppose to make them about cpu, but the directors assumed audiences wouldnt understand the references, it doesnt make sense since the robots can use nuclear power, geothermal energy, and wind.

or the enterprise episode where the repair station AI used alien brains it kidnapped to increase its CPU power, permanently damaging the brains of the ones that stayed there the longest.
