Bill George based the USS Pasteur/Olympic-class on earlier design work by Matt Jefferies. Indeed, that work was for the original Enterprise, and was discarded because it was felt that the spherical hull was "too bulky."
The crying space baby ruined the overall story arc for me. I know it's sci-fi, I know it requires suspension of disbelief. I just could not suspend enough disbelief.
That the universe could be that fragile and so many well understood laws of physics could be broken simultaneously without any understanding for decades...but the millennium out-of-date-ship could solve the mystery in weeks was just too much for me
