Proctor & Gamble released Tide Pods in 2012, and almost immediately poison control centers started getting calls about mostly toddlers but some elderly dementia patients that bit into one thinking it was candy. It became something of a joke, videos with a very similar format to the Grimace Shake Meme, remember that, were filmed, someone would pretend to eat or even cook tide pods, smash cut to them dead or writhing in pain. CollegeHumor did a skit on it, and then our boys at The Onion ran an article in 2015 titled "So Help Me God, I’m Going To Eat One Of Those Multicolored Detergent Pods"
In 2016 teens start actually daring each other to eat tide pods. 53 cases of intentional ingestion by teenagers are recorded in 2016 and another 53 in 2017.
In early January 2018, major news outlets start running their typical fearmongering pieces about "Teenagers are eating tide pods: A dangerous new trend." January of 2018 sees 83 cases alone.
These satire sites and the actual news networks did basically nothing but fan the flames and they should probably not fucking do that.
Though I would like to nominate the galaxy brains at Proctor & Gamble for this year's Thomas Midgley Jr. Award for Absurdly Destructive Chemical Engineering. Only you would think to package caustic laundry detergent with pointlessly colorful liquid in bite-sized packs, and then keep producing them for years to come as kids were increasingly injured by this product, with only minor changes to the packaging offered as a solution. Al Qaeda wishes they could have hurt as many American children as you, P&G. Congratulations on your achievement.
If you're still alive, congrats, you survived the tide pod fitness test and many others! Can you survive the ongoing "don't fall in love with AI and then kill yourself when it generates tokens advising you to do so" challenge??

It’s weird to bite the onion on a story literally about biting

So let's talk about the Tide Pod Challenge.

I mean, who hasn't taken a bite out of the Döner wrapper?
starchylemming@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 5d
The aluminium foil with all the sauce is the best part
binarytobis@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 5d
Shit, this is the first time I’ve taken a bite of the Onion.
Raiderkev@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 5d
It got me too
Dispassionate@quokk.au · 3 pts · 5d
Did it taste like paper and dissatisfaction?
blimthepixie@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 3 pts · 5d
I've et an orange with the wrapper on before
tacosanonymous@mander.xyz · 2 pts · 5d
Very tart but lots of fiber.
clay_pidgin@sh.itjust.works · 1 pts · 5d
It might be good for you.

I was so drunk in Toulon one night that I ate half a kebab with the wrapper still on.
Maultasche@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 5d
I take it, they don't wrap kebabs in tinfoil there
Fuckswearwords@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 5d
They usually are in these and tinfoil. I've bitten into the paper many a time as well.
Maultasche@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 5d
I've completely forgotten about those. I usually have Lahmacun Kebap which is directly wrapped in foil.
AnchoriteMagus@sh.itjust.works · 1 pts · 4d
Yup, it was one of these. I got all the way down to the little guy before I realized the rest was in my stomach.
kibblebits@quokk.au · 4 pts · 5d
How many of us here cannot say the same?
scrodumb@lemmy.ca · 1 pts · 4d
I've never been to Toulon
chefdano3@lemmy.zip · 3 pts · 4d
No. Don't give them any ideas. If tide pods could be a thing, so could this.
Fredselfish@sh.itjust.works · 2 pts · 4d
Don't give them ideas! Already got scientists trying to make edible plastic. They will try do this if they could.
