Another great Tim Curry role.

FuglyDuck@lemmy.world · 7 pts · 2h

You know what's hilariously funny about Tim Curry as Cardinal Asshole?

Nailed the look.

d'Artagnan isn't a Musketeer 😜

He wants to be but he's an asshole and how he gets mixed up with the others is a great fucking story

I've not read the book spin-off with human characters, I've only seen the original one with the cartoon dogs.

QueenHawlSera@piefed.social · 3 pts · 4h (2 replies)

I'm not familiar with that one

I recommend at least watching the intro, so you can have The theme tune stuck in your head for several years.

...Spanish–Japanese children's animated television series...

A combo I'd never expect, but in hindsight makes perfect sense.

I always have to stop and think twice before saying D'artagnan, to me still is D'artacán.

rants_unnecessarily@piefed.social · 1 pts · 1h

Toy mean Dogtanan?

Whelks_chance@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 3h

So which ones Albert?

aaaa@piefed.world · 10 pts · 6h (2 replies)

None of them use muskets?

thisbenzingring@lemmy.today · 6 pts · 6h (1 reply)

they were the royal guard, its just what they were called. the musket was not really a thing at that time, it was mostly called a arquebus

FuglyDuck@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 5h

the unit that Charles de Batz de Castelmore served in was called Les Mousquetaires du Roi, or the the Musketeers of the king. Charles de Batz de Castlemore served as a captain in the unit during Lois XIII and Dumas roughly based his novels off his exploits.

As an aside, one of the few things the movies gets right about the novel (or even just the period) was the general foppishness of the military culture and upper-classes of the time.

BillyClark@piefed.social · 3 pts · 5h

Maybe that's just the face Patrick Stewart makes when he finds a person who isn't well versed in the classics, and he reused it for that episode.

FuglyDuck@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 5h (1 reply)

He is in ten years later (which iirc, the movie is closer to in plot.)

In the books, he goes to the musketeers and presents his father’s letter of introduction, but gets turned away since he needed to serve a period of time in another unit. By the end of musketeers, he joins the Cardinal’s and goes to war with the three.

Edit: to clarify, the war is against England, not the cardinal. the Duke of Buckingham invades and france's armies are called up- including both the Cardinal's church soldiers and the king's musketeers. There's a lovely little scene where they're at a siege, the defenders are lobbing cannon at them, and the french infantry are mostly hanging back waiting for something to change. D'Artangan takes a dare or bet to go eat lunch within range of the castle's cannon and the three go join him, hurling insults at the english.

Does he eat a baguette and then smoke a cigarette?

sundray@lemmus.org · 22 pts · 7h

There! Are! No! Muskets!

Kolanaki@pawb.social · 20 pts · 5h (5 replies)

D'artagnan ain't a musketeer. He's just a friend of the 3 actual musketeers.

Mouselemming@sh.itjust.works · 9 pts · 4h (4 replies)

Having started the friendship by challenging each of them to a duel. As you do.

Kolanaki@pawb.social · 6 pts · 3h (1 reply)

When he does it, he makes friends.

But when I challenge other dudes to a duel at the urinal, they just quickly zip up and leave. 🫩

tigeruppercut@lemmy.zip · 1 pts · 1h

Gotta catch em on the way out. No one wants to cross swords on a full bladder.

FuglyDuck@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 2h

I mean, read the books.... the reason he was rejected from the musketeers was because he needed to serve in another unit for a period of time. he goes away getting into duels with everyone, because he was a gascon, and they were basically the muricans of the time. In any case, during his adventure in which he was doing a favor for the queen

during the ordeal, the Cardinal's man- Count Stinky Cheese- (aka Captain Balthasar de Montmorency, Count of Rochefort,)- was given a full parden for things he did. D'Artagnan got caught and was being accused of treason, but had successfully gotten the favor done. Since he was apparently Capable, the Cardinal handed him a captaincy with his soldiers; in part for averting the worst of the Cardinal's plans. (I think the king suggested it as a way to get the D'Artagnan the experience for the musketeers.)

How else do you make friends?

“The Three Musketeers and That Fucking Guy Who Just Won’t Go Home” was slightly too long for a movie title. Woulda been fine as a We Are the Union song title though.

starchylemming@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 5h

Sound like a modern manga title

jaybone@lemmy.zip · 3 pts · 2h

Wasn’t there a holodeck program where they were musketeers?

moopet@sh.itjust.works · 2 pts · 1h

I can totally see Matt Berry in that role.

Wataba@sh.itjust.works · 2 pts · 6h (3 replies)

Unrelated, but why does the Cardassian in the back look like Putin?

ummthatguy@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 5h (2 replies)

Clearer shot, top right.

You're right, though. The big forehead, droopy eyes, mild scowl, and similar nose.

baines@lemmy.cafe · 2 pts · 4h (1 reply)

because cardassians are space russians

i was thinking that was brian thompson but he only ever played klingons

ummthatguy@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 4h

At least, by TNG/DS9 they are to a degree. The Klingons held that role in TOS. The occupation of Bajor with the concentration camps reflects on WWII Germany a fair bit, plus other dictatorships. The Obsidian Order certainly stands in for the KGB, though.
